Charlie Dodrill is my favorite Christian musician. A lot of Christian singers sound like they only decided to go into Christian music when their mainstream careers didn't pan out. They just re-wrote their love songs to the girlfriends, crossing out she and replacing it with He. Charlie, on the other hand, sounds like he's actually read the Bible. He and Michael Card are the only two Christian musicians I can stand in large doses. I love this song of his on people being freed from bondage to legalism. It's called "Misconception." Reminds me of my life in SDA-ism, before I realized God's love for me is not contingent on my ability to do all the right stuff. (If you go to his website, you can hear it for free. Click on the little widgety CD player-looking thing on the top right to cycle through his songs until Misconception comes up)
quote:He sits and dwells on things that he has done She leads a life no one would care to own They concentrate on things that really don't matter much He's told that he is clean, but he's unsure And she's convinced that You're ashamed of her And they're preoccupied with always doing it right... doing it right Some people think you are there looking over their shoulder Just waiting for them to fall But I know You adore me since even before me Was an entity at all There's not always a task that you will ask me To perform for You So I sit with my friend and revel in The fact that I'm delighted in by You... by You And I thank You, God, that You're not mean Not so concerned with where I've been You don't ask me for anything No, nothing but this heart And I thank You, God, that You're not mean Preoccupied with fault and sin You don't ask me for anything No, nothing but this heart You've given me... yeah, yeah This heart You've given me... Oh, One day, he will see You She'll lift her head They'll begin to understand just why You bled on that mountain The Cloud to roll away Of what we must do and must say. Oh, the law became a Person that day And I'm so happy about the day... that he sees clear And she delights in Your delight when she sees the light in Your in eyes drawing her near The day that they realize... That it's all about Jesus That it's all about Jesus That it's all about Jesus That it's all about Jesus And on that day they'll say Some people think you are there looking over their shoulder Just waiting for them to fall But I know You adore me since even before me Was an entity at all There's not always a task that you will ask me To perform for You So I sit with my friend and revel in The fact that I'm delighted in by You... by You And I thank You, God, that You're not mean Not so concerned with where I've been You don't ask me for anything No, nothing but this heart And I thank You, God, that You're not mean Preoccupied with fault and sin You don't ask me for anything No, nothing but this heart You've given me...

This is the first time I've heard of Charlie Dodrill. This is a great song... it's all about Jesus. That's the focus that gets lost in the legalism. I also love Nicole Nordeman's song called "Holy". I connected with this song after I left the SDA church. Here's the link for her song on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhHtgScGUGs How many roads did I travel Before I walked down one that led me to You? How many dream did unravel Before I believed in a hope that was true? How long? How far? What was meant to fulfill only emptied me still And all You ever wanted… Only me on my knees Singing holy, holy And somehow All that matters now is You are holy, holy How many deaths did I die Before I was awakened to new life again? How many half truths did bear witness to ‘Til the proof was disproved in the end? How long? How far? What was meant to illuminate shadowed me still And all You ever wanted… All I have is gratitude to offer You It still hits home "How many half truths did I bear witness to..." only to realize that God only wanted me on my knees crying out "Holy". These words mean sooooo much to me now. ~vivian p.s. Chris Tomlin was the first Christian concert I went to after my exodus. Unbelievable. I have gone to many concerts... really for me to enjoy the music. His was a completely different concert. His focus was that we were there that night to worship God, our Sovereign God... It was an awesome praise time to God. |
