well looky looky,Im sure this will have SDA heads a spinning Oregon’s struggling auto dealers plan to ask the Legislature to impose “blue laws” prohibiting car sales on Sunday. The day off would help them cut costs during an economic downturn that has already put 19 Oregon dealerships out of business this year. Nationally, sales of domestic cars declined more than 35 percent in 2008. Greg Remensperger, executive vice president of the Oregon Automobile Dealers Association, told The Oregonian newspaper his members strongly favor the measure. “No question, there’s some troubled times out there,” Remensperger said. It’s unclear if legislators will take to the idea. The plan wouldn’t cost the state anything, but lawmakers already have a full plate when their session starts next month. A spokesman for House Majority Leader Dave Hunt, D-Gladstone, said he hadn’t heard of the proposal and didn’t know enough about it to comment. Eleven other states have a similar prohibition on Sunday auto sales. |

Why on earth do they need a law to not be open on Sunday?? Just don't open! Obviously this is to force compliance on the recalcitrant. Nasssty! |

When I lived in NJ the dealership we went to was always closed on Sundays...kind of an inconvenience for us. No law that I know of tho. |

Lots of busineses, everywhere, are closed on Sunday simply because the owners or a significant number of their employees wish to be in church that day. Since our plant normally has a 24/7 operation, I have been allowed to have Sunday/Monday as my weekend. If we had any SDA folks, they would be allowed to have Friday/Saturday as their 'weekend'. We have these laws here in Illinois. No car dealerships are open on Sunday. Somehow it doesn't result in people being forced to go to church. Funny that. When I was an SDA, I hated these laws because it meant I couldn't get my car serviced at the dealership, or shop for a new one. Now I don't care. If my history is correct, these blue laws all came out of Protestant Sabbatarianism arising in England. They applied all the Sabbatarian arguments of Adventism to Sunday. Apparently they also didn't know that Jesus is our Sabbath rest. |

This is sure going to play into the Adventists hands on their teachings about the Sunday-law. When I was a kid all stores were closed on sundays and it sure did not bring on persecution of sda's by other christians then. I also do not understand why the auto dealerships need a law to close on sundays. When I had my shop (and still sda) I was closed on Saturdays and Sundays and I sure did not need a law for it. Now if you have a business in a mall that is another story as you have to keep the mall hours. Gail |

The purpose of wanting such a law is that the dealers want to close on Sunday but don't want their competetors being open when they are closed. It's all about money. Phil |

So much for free enterprise and honest competition! That's a bigger issue for me than the Sunday law there! Pretty sure we have one in Texas already. Since nearly all my SDA family lives in Oregon, I'll probably hear about that one! =) In order for a Sunday law to be a religious issue and the dividing line between the saved/obedient of God's children and the lost/rebellious, it must: 1 - forbid work on Sunday 2 - require worship on Sunday 3 - forbid worship on any other day of the week. 4 - require one to work on Saturday Devout Jews would pass the "mark of the beast" test as well. So, if they don't have the Mark of the Beast, but don't think Jesus is the Son of God and Messiah, savior of the world, are they still saved because of the Sabbath? I think I detect a false god.. When it comes to Last day prophecy, Adventist claim to have "it" all figured out. They are right and the rest of the other interpretations of prophecy are wrong. Such boldness(or egotists?) ha ha.. Since leaving Adventism in May of this year, I have revisited Bible prophecy without the aid of Ellen White eyeglasses. What a different perspective I have now about end-time events. The way I was taught to understand Revelation and Daniel was totally deceptive. Sunday laws and the Mark of the Beast being Sunday worship are now absent to my present understanding and continuing study of the topic. Such a refreshing change in my study of the Bible. I dont fear the future anymore...I embrace it with great anticipation and joy. Animal..Isnt the Bible awesome !!!!! |

you know animal you are sooo right once the EGW glasses are removed things arent so scary anymore. One thing that really got me is EGW's alcohol addiction, and to think so many people use condiments because of "vinigar" give me a break, she was just a plain drunk.. I started to email my SDA friends her addiction to "vinigar" once but deleted it,thought better not to,because I know they would recieve it as me being bitter, instead of exposing error. |

Amen, Animal! Sondra, great post. I've thought for a long time that if Sunday laws were to be passed (and it's not really hard to imagine that they could be), Adventists would be all over them, certain that it was time for the seal of God and the mark of the beast to be "issued". In reality, the fear that legislating a day of worship will signal the final destiny of every person on earth is a great deception. Jesus is the "line of demarcation", not a created day. Colleen |

I so agree, Colleen, that Jesus Christ is THE Line In The Sand. Since childhood until he died, my SDA father said that an economic crisis would bring in the Sunday laws against SDA's. Back in the 1970's, during the oil crisis, he and others were so sure that it was the beginning of The End. It was said that the economic crisis would make the governments force all to take off Sundays to save money (or something), then the rest would follow... Of course, we know that did not happen--hard economic times come and go...and the SDA'a are still safe from us Sunday Christians! It is sad that such fear rules their lives and logic, as it used to do mine. May we all always obtain God's common sense and balance, no matter what happens in the world. Cathy |

Thank God I do not even think of the Sunday laws. They are brought to mind when I read the posts the SDAs put on CARM and CF. It is so much better to think of God and know that whatever is happening in the world, that He is still in charge. I do not have to be afraid as I was when I was SDA. When I was studying Hebrews while on vacation I read Heb 13 where God tells us "I will never leave you or forsake you". That is so re assuring. I believe it fully with no reservations. Instead of being afraid of life or death or whatever will happen just before Jesus come, I so look forward to seeing Jesus. Come Lord Jesus come. You are so awesome. Diana L |

In some states it is against the law to buy hard liquor or beer/wine with an alcolol content of over 3.2% on Sunday. These laws have been around a long time. I am sure adventists are OK with those laws. Surfy |

I was reading this link http://www.ellenwhiteexposed.com/nsl/egw22a.htm It gives a person a kind of overall history of the Sunday law stuff. I think I had read it before, but it was still a good read to help me keep SDA-ism in perspective. River |
