Ex. 32:15 "And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written." I was discussing this verse with my brother the other day and we got to wondering, where did we get the belief that commandments 1-4 were written on one side and commandments 5-10 on the other? (Possibly an Ellenism or Hollywoodism?) Then we read some other texts as below: Ex. 24: 12 "And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them." Deut. 9:10 "And the LORD delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the LORD spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly." We were just wondering whether it was more than just the ten commandments that were written on the stone tablets considering that these two texts above state that ?possibly both the law and commandments as well as all the words God spoke to Moses on the mount were included on these stone tablets!? | ||

Ellen claimed that she saw all Ten Commandments and that there was a "special" glow around the fourth -- which would be rather hard if they were written, as Scripture tells us, on both sides. Presumably they were also laying down, rather than standing up. Also did you know that a written copy of the Ten Commandments were also stored on the outside of the ark with the rest of the Laws of Moses? The whole notion of moral vs. ceremonial is unbiblical. Is beastiality ceremonial? Is incest ceremonial? What about sin offerings? Ellen White says that part of the sacrificial system is still in effect. According to the amount bestowed will be the amount required. The larger the capital entrusted, the more valuable is the gift which God requires to be returned to Him. If a Christian has ten or twenty thousand dollars, God's claims are imperative upon him, not only to give his proportion according to the tithing system, but to present his sin offerings and thank offerings to God. Testimonies, Volume 4, page 467The Bible tells us what the sin offering consists of: And you shall take all the fat that covers the entrails, and the long lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them, and burn them on the altar. But the flesh of the bull and its skin and its dung you shall burn with fire outside the camp; it is a sin offering. In Early Writings, p. 32 EGW describes seeing the stone tablets: "... and the tables of stone which folded together like a book. Jesus opened them, and I saw the ten commandments written on them with the finger of God. On one table were four, and on the other six. The four on the first table shone brighter than the other six. But the fourth, the Sabbath commandment, shone above them all..." I think that according to Jewish traditions, they believe that the tables were made of a blue stone. They believe that the commandments were stamped all the way through to both sides. The centers of the letters were suspended in the centers of some of the characters. Someone else may have other information on Jewish customs and beliefs. It's been awhile since I've read about that. Either way, the Bible doesn't describe the 10 commandments opening up "like a book". Moses' description is that they were written on both sides front and back. ~vivian | ||
