I found something while doing a study on the Sabbath, which many here may have already known or seen. But to me it was a new one I have read the story many times before but didn't catch something so I felt like sharing... The Jewish usually associate the Exodus with Passover. But it is just as intimately connected with the Sabbath. One of the important miracles of the Exodus was that of the Manna. For forty years, some three million people were literally fed by a miracle. This miracle, a lesson for the ages, dramatically demonstrates G-d's involvement, in the day to day life of each one of us. In order that the Jews not forget that it was a miracle, the Manna was presented in a most unique way. It only appeared six days a week, but was absent on the Sabbath. The miracle of the Manna paralleled the miracle of Creation. When Moses told the Jews about the forthcoming Manna, he said (Ex. 16:26), "You shall gather it for six days, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there shall be none." So We know that Jesus said that He is the bread from Heaven that God provided and not Moses. Jesus is our Manna. when Jesus was crucified, on what day did He rest in His tomb or go into the belly of the Earth? Saturday, the Sabbath. So Jesus was not with us on the Sabbath, but he rose from the dead on Sunday. Hence it is the new creation. Now we can tie the Creation from Genesis, Exodus, To the Gospel of Jesus Christ our Savior. Jesus Rested from His works on Sabbath, and we are invited to enter into His Rest. Jesus is our Sabbath! Praise Jesus! |

Yet another reason why Jesus is our Sabbath... The unique aspect of the Sabbath is the fact that through it we can partake of God without any positive effort. All we must do is refrain from work, and God does the rest. In a sense, this is what the Torah means when it says (Ex. 31:13), "You shall keep My Sabbaths ... that you may know that I am God, Who makes you holy." At all other times, one must strive to make himself holy, by doing the various Mitzvos. But on the Sabbath, one need only refrain from doing-and God does the rest. It is then He who is the One making the person holy. |

Such great insight, Pnoga! You're right. The manna is a powerful symbol of God giving the Bread of Life at the same time He gives rest in Him. All our needs are provided in Jesus when we cease from our own striving. Great comments. I enjoyed your thoughts about Jesus in the tomb as well. Colleen |
