From Deuteronomy 18:20-22 NIV
quote:But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, must be put to death. You may say to yourselves, How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the LORD? If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the LORD does not take place or come true, that is a message the LORD has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him.
This is really interesting, especially in light of the fact that Seventh-day Adventists desperately want to stay under the Old Covenant. According to this commandment, Ellen White would have been "put to death". Gilbert Jorgensen |

I used to tell my husband that and he just laughed at me! Most SDA's I've met truly do not believe that verse pertains to Ellen G White. Wouldn't it be nice to put all those red books to death? Leigh Anne |

I know, Leigh Anne. Somehow they try to make the false prophet indicments not applicable to Ellen or even the "new covenant". Several years ago someone made the smart remark, "Ellen White was the first false prophet stoned before her first false vision!" Colleen |

I believe all claims of prophecy or "insight" should be put to the same test with the same call for rejection. This might mean that critical analysis of Ellen White, GT Armstrong, Nostradomus (sp?), Joseph Smith, Mary Baker Eddy, and other more recent "predictors" might cause their proponents to reject them out of hand. Unfortunately, when I have challenged persons on Ellen, and asked them to review critically her contradictory views, they don't seem to find the will or seek to find an easy (or in some cases not so easy) explanation to excuse. It seems that there is a blinder in front of their eyes. |

It is interesting that of all the 'tests' or 'proofs' used by Adventists to show that EGW was, in fact, a prophet, this text is never used. It was brought to my attention (by friends that still attend the SDA church that we used to attend) that 'the ones who have the prophet are the ones that made up the tests to prove she was a prophet'. Of course, when I was an SDA I used the same proofs and believe them to show EGW to be a prophet. I never read Deut 18 then and I feel certain that most SDAs have not read it either. But, really, the 'mistake' about the date was not EGW's fault anyway. Remember it was God who put his hand over a 'mistake' in the calculations, so you can't really call that 'false' or say that 'it does not take place or come to pass', can you? Can you? ISO |

If Adventist spent more time explaining the Bible instead of explaining it away we would have far less Adventist and a whole lot more honest Christians. If E.G.W would have spent a lot more time in the word and a lot less time with the books she plagiarized from and a lot less time with her spirit guide and a lot less time trying to cover her mistakes and a lot more time admitting to them,a whole lot more time honestly seeking God a whole lot more people would be a whole lot more better off. If Adventist spent a lot less time with Adventism and a lot more time with the savior we would have a lot less Advetism. IMHO. River |

ISO, you're giving me SDA flashbacks! (All the times my in-laws tried to corner me - made my head spin!) River, I agree with you. I don't think my fil can read his Bible without the commentaries. In fact, isn't that the whole reason for the new SDA bible? I wonder what that text translates as? Leigh Anne |

Yes ISO. God directed Miller, guided him to set the dates exactly as he (God) wanted them to be, errors and all. Then he hid the errors from them so that they would be disappointed! And I thought calling God a liar was a bad thing... I just read (skimmed) through the book 'More Than A Prophet-How We Lost and Found Again the Real Ellen White'. A Sabbath School I've attended a couple of times are using it in their study. Anyway, in the book they go through how to test a prophet. Most of that chapter is spent on how NOT to test a prophet and then on the last 2 1/2 pages they tell how a prophet should be tested without using any of the texts that are revealed in Scripture. AMAZING! But SDA's will buy it hook, line, and sinker because the book is written to defend EGW. I had seen these arguments used on other forums I post on, now I know where they came from (no credit was given, of course!). |

Also check out this text: Jeremiah 23:30 "'Therefore behold, I am against the prophets,' says the Lord, 'who steal My words every one from his neighbor.'" |
