1. My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus' name.
On Christ, the solid Rock I stand:
All other ground is sinking sand.

2. When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds with the veil.
On Christ, the solid Rock I stand:
All other ground is sinking sand.

3. His oath, His covenant, His blood,
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.
On Christ, the solid Rock I stand:
All other ground is sinking sand.

4. When He shall come with trumpet sound,
O may I then in Him be found:
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.
On Christ, the solid Rock I stand:
All other ground is sinking sand.

How many times did I sing this song as an SDA? ----- Too many to count.

I sang it and didn't understand what I was singing. How could I sing that so many times and not comprehend? How could it have been right in front of my eyes and not see it? Praise God the veil is lifted!!!

What beautiful lyrics. His grace is awesome!

I have the words to this hymn on my note board by my calendar. It wasn't until God pulled me out of Adventism and to Him, that I too understood what I was singing. I am in awe of His Grace.

Okay, I hunted around online and no one seems to know exactly, but this woman had some interesting thoughts on the "sweetest frame". http://everydaymusings.blogspot.com/2006/04/sweetest-frame.html

What would help would be notes on the hymn from the author...

:-)My mental picture of 'sweetest frame' had to do with the framing of a foundation. No matter how 'sweet' the location, or the materials, or the apparent sturdiness of a foundation, if it isn't founded on 'Christ the solid rock' it is worthless.

Based on Webster's definition of frame of reference, I suspect the "sweetest frame" in the song probably is shorthand for this phrase:

"frame of reference n., a structure of concepts, values, customs, or views by means of which an individual or group perceives or evaluates data, communicates ideas, and regulates behavior."

Beautiful lyrics!

This morning at our monthly systematic theology class, we studied The Church. We ended with the words to the song, "The Church's One Foundation".

Tell me if you've ever heard this last stanza before; it's not in the SDA Hymnal:

Yet she on earth has union
With God the Three in One
and mystic sweet communion
With those whose rest is won
O happy ones and holy
Lord give us grace that we
Like them, the meek and lowly
On high may dwell with Thee.

I guess we couldn't have sung about either having "mystic sweet communion with those who rest is won" as long as we had no spirits and were limited by sould sleep...nor could we sing about them being "happy" and "holy" in their rest.

Praise God for bringing us into Himself and revealing reality to us!!

Colleen
