Does anyone know about this book by Uriah Smith, ìSynopsis of the Present Truth"? Do Adventists still ackowledge him? All I recall is that he was the one, who had the vision in the cornfield about the 'correct date' and the real reason for it (Sanctuary Doctrine), after the 1844 disappointment, right? Then Ellen White confirmed it. Cathy |

CathyóHiram Edson had the cornfield vision; Uriah Smith wrote "Thoughts on Daniel and the Revelation"óa book still considered to contain authentic Adventist doctrine. I don't iknow anything about his "Synopsis". Uriah is honored as one of the Adventist pioneers. James White asked him to be the first assistant editor of the Review and Herald, and his career with the Review spanned about 50 years. He was also the first secretary of the General Conference and held that office for six terms. Uriah was born in 1832 and became a Millerite, falling away from religion after the great disappointment. In the mid 1850's he became an Adventist with the help of his sister Annie's influenceóshe had become an SDA. He married the sister-in-law of J.N. Andrews, SDA pioneer missionary for whom Andrews University is named. Uriah died in 1903 and is considered one of the greats among the early Adventists. Colleen |

Thank you for your clarification, Colleen. I always got those two mixed up. I ran acorss the mention of this other Smith book on an SDA website, but not the book itself. (I haven't Googled it; I do not intend to read it) I am wondering if my SDA family has read it. Is Hiram Edson still considered with respect among SDA's? I seem to recall that some tossed him out in the 80's, while Ford was presenting his new Sanctuary/IJ thesis. Thanks, Cathy |

Hiram Edson had his famous cornfield vision and then I beleve he repudiated the doctrine of 1844, and left the "remnant" church. Someone may be able to correct me on this. Stan |

Here is a reference document regarding Edson's "cornfield vision" and the evolution of the IJ by the early SDAís. It was prepared by Fernand Fisel, Professor Emeritus at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. It is quite interesting!!! www.truthorfables.com/Edson's%20final%20version%20with%20appendices%20corrected.pdf Larry

What was that letter that Ellen White wrote (Camden vison??) which tells the horribleness of the shut door doctrine so succintly? Dale Ratzlaff said that the letter was once considered to be fake, but that Uriah Smith had tried to "explain it" away somehow, and that showed that the letter was genuine. Does anyone know where Smith's attempts to rationalize Ellen's vision can be read? That would be interesting. And handy for when any Adventists debate the authenticity of Ellen's vision. |

Ramone, Uriah Smith wrote an entire BOOK defending Ellen's visions and how they really were from God. It's entitled "The Visions of Mrs. E. G. White, A Manifestation of Spiritual gifts According to the Scripture".. Not only does it contain a defense of the Camden vision, showing the genuineness of the vision, he also defends Ellen's statement about amalgamation, another indefensible belief of her fellow men. I don't have my bound volumes of the Review and Herald articles anymore (got rid of most of that stuff!) but there was a series of articles Smith wrote that later made up this book. These articles were in the Review from June 12 - July 31, 1866, if any SDA has them and wants to look. Here is the actual book on a site most SDA's would trust http://www.ellenwhitedefend.com/Vision-sup/visions_supported.htm Here is a link that has some interesting information as well as statements from others besides Loughborough's disbelief and Smith's response. http://www.ex-sda.com/camden-g.htm Susan (Message edited by SusanS on November 19, 2006) |
