What are you reading now? Now that you have the "freedom" to explore other Christian authors. I know I'm enjoying a smorgasboard of material. I'm sure some will want to criticize or warn about some of the material I read. Generally that peaks my interest all the more. I spent the first half of my life being "careful" about who I listened to or what I read, for fear of being decieved. I'm so grateful to rest in God's promise to guard my heart and mind. On my nightstand is "God meant it for Good, a fresh look at the life of Joseph" by R.T. Kendall. I love this book! Dd, you would probably like this with your in-depth Genesis study. Also "Grace, God's unmerited favor", Charles Spurgeon--A favorite, I read parts of this often. "Divine Healing" Andrew Murray--just starting this one. "As Sivler Refined" Kay Arthur. (not really enjoying this one, it was a gift, so Im trying to get thru it, maybe it will get better) The book of "Daniel" by Daniel. The Holy Bible. (This is my light reading material.... A novel (gasp), that I am reading right now, actually a trilogy, is by Ted Dekker, "Black". The description of Thomas, when he swims in Elyon's lake, and drinks in His love, was amazing. I cried more tears over that description of God's love. Made me really LONG to stay in His presence. Has anyone read this Dekker trilogy!? Lori 4excape@bellsouth.net | ||

I tend to read several books during the same period. Right now I am rotating "Heaven" by Alcorn, "White Washed" by Cleveland, "Sabbath in Christ" by Ratslaff and "Mark" from the Bible. Coming up: ?, maybe some of the OT prophets. Alan | ||

Lori, have you ever read Francine Rivers? The Mark of the Lion Trilogy is AWESOME! Redeeming Love is excellent as well, based on the book of Hosea. Actually I'll read anything she puts out.  Leigh Anne | ||

Lori, Cool question. I just started "For the Beauty of the Earth" by Steven Bouma-Prediger. One of my pastors actually recommended I read it. After a sermon about how we as Christians are responsible for the care of our earth, after all, Adam and Eve were commanded to take care of the earth, I told him that I had never been around circles that were interested in this because Christ was going to come soo soon. One time at an SDA business meeting, while talking of building a new church, the comment was made by a pastor that there was no need, it would just be firewood anyway. Prediger talks alot about "ecological theology and environmental ethics" After learning that the new Covenant is "Love your neighbor" I feel like I now have to learn what that really is. It seems that old covenant is looking in all the time, watching what you eat, what you wear, what you drink, when you rest.... new covenant is looking out, helping others, focusing on other peoples needs, even their environment...!? ts | ||

Leigh Anne, I have read almost all of Francine River's books. The Mark of the Lion trilogy is my favorite. I have read the series 3 times. I cried all the way through Redeeming Love. Another series that is excellent is Abram's Daughters by Beverly Lewis. It is set in the Amish community of Lancaster County, PA . The first book in the series is "The Covenant." Right now I am reading "Anchored in Christ - A Solid Rock in the Storms of Life" by Norm Wakefield. Great thread, Lori! | ||

Hey Lori, Like many here, I keep a few books going at once. 1776 by David McCullough, Prayer, does it make a difference by Phillip Yancey, Cultic Doctrine by Dale Ratzlaff, and a mystery novel I've just begun to read called The Thirteenth Chapter by Diane Setterfield. Since cooking is a big hobby with me, I have various cookbooks around that I'm reading...TOO many to mention! I'm reading the book of Romans again with BSF, as well as Colossians and Galatians. I enjoy Francine River's books as well. One of my favorite authors was a Victorian preacher, novelist and mystic by the name of George MacDonald. A friend introduced me to his fiction in 1998 and I've enjoyed his tales of Scotland that are interwoven with spiritual truths. I would recommend him. Both CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien regarded McDonald as their spiritual mentors. Susan Susan | ||

Leigh, I'll look for "The Covenant" next time I'm at the Bible book store. I've never had a good habit of reading regularly, but I do enjoy it once I find a good story. Susan, I've read about George MacDonald in another of my favorite stories, "The Great Divorce" by C.S. Lewis. I'm sure you know there's a whole chapter devoted to him! Leigh Anne | ||

I've read the Ted Dekker trilogy "Black", "Red" and "White". I really enjoyed each book. I recently bought C.S. Lewis "The Screwtape Letters" but haven't started it yet. I will have to read a Francine Rivers book when I finish the ones I have. I have a habit of reading several non-fiction books at a time and never finishing them. Kathy | ||

Right now I'm reading "Dancing Alone" by Frank Schaeffer. It's not a book most people on this forum would read, but makes some pretty good points IMO. It seems quite convincing in it's explanation of how America got to be so relativistic, where there isn't a right or wrong anymore. Anything goes in America as long as there is a common consent by people that it's ok. Jeremiah | ||

Cathy, I've not read it, but I have the utmost respect for Michael Card. He is my favorite Christian singer, and his lyrics are so biblically based. I am about to buy his latest CD, and I'm always blessed by them. I'd be interested to know about this book, too, having not read any of the ones he has written. Susan | ||

I guess I need to read Francine Rivers, Leigh Anne, Susans and Leigh! Thanks for the suggestions. Kathy, I get several going at once as well, and often do not finish them... Goldenbear, I loved Classic Christianity. Alan, I like reading Alcorn stuff, havent read that one yet. Leigh, is that Lewis series the one that has "the shunning"? I read that one. Maybe since we like the same music, we would like the same books. . Have you heard Barlowgirl's version of "Enough". All of You is more than enough for All of me for every thirst and every need You satisfy me with Your love And all I have in You Is more than enough You're my sacrifice of greatest price... Hi Lori, The "Shunning" is in a different series by B. Lewis. I haven't read that one yet. My daughter has, though. We have been able to find these great inspirational fiction books at our library. Check your libary to see if they are available. My girls love Barlowgirl and we all love the song "Enough". Leigh | ||

I always felt free to read other authors, and most of my Adventist friends did too. Guess I hung around with a radical group I'm reading Uprising: A Revolution of the Soul by Erwin McManus. Really good so far. I'm also a reading Glimpsing the Face of God by Alister McGrath. Nice writing and beautiful pictures. | ||

Bob, I have to agree with you. Tears rolled down my face as I read it. I have some problems with some of his other books, but the view he painted of the Gospel struck a chord in my heart. | ||

My books are on an old kids school desk, I must have at least 8 different books I read, Bible's, commentaries, a book on Bigfoot, etc. |
