As a SDA I sang Hark the Herald Angels Sing so many times, but it wasn't until a few years ago that I truely "heard" the words I had sung for so many years. "Hark! the herald angels sing, - "Glory to the newborn King! Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled. Strange, I always sang the second verse of "Hark" as "Offspring of the virgin's womb." I wonder which version is the original? My favorite Christmas song btw is "Oh Come Oh Come Emmanuel." Festively, Hannah | ||

Hi Hannah, About "Hark"... yes, I haven't seen the "favored one" version before, either. Cyberhymnal has the popular version as well as the original lyrics that Charles Wesley wrote for the song. The popular version is slightly altered (what is the "welkin"??) to fit the music by Felix Mendelssohn (arranged by William H. Cummings). The words "heaven-born Prince of peace" also seem missing from the popular version, but I always remember singing them. Oh well. Tinkerings happen! The popular version: Wesley's original:

"Adam's likeness, Lord, efface; Stamp Thy image in its place." What beautiful words! Now, do SDAs actually believe that? I remember teaching that to the Junior class I taught shortly before I left the SDA church. The pastor's son was in the class. The pastor at that church was a conservative SDA and very much into Ellen White. I remember him sitting in watching me teach a couple times - maybe he was worried, but he never said anything against what I was teaching. If I used the lesson quarterly it was only to get the general topic and maybe some ideas for activities. |
