I didn't know there were good Sabbath-rest hymns! All I'd know was things like Fanny Crosby's "Don't forget the Sabbath". But I found this hymn by Charles Wesley which talks about the Sabbath-rest in Jesus, and I thought I'd share it. I found it at the great resource site, http://www.cyberhymnal.org
quote:"Lord, I Believe a Rest Remains" by Charles Wesley Lord, I believe a rest remains To all Thy people known, A rest where pure enjoyment reigns, And Thou art loved alone. A rest where all our soul's desire Is fixed on things above; Where fear, and sin, and grief expire, Cast out by perfect love. O that I now the rest might know, Believe, and enter in! Now, Savior, now the the power bestow, And let me cease from sin. Remove this hardness from my heart, This unbelief remove: To me the rest of faith impart, The Sabbath of Thy love.

Ramone, what a great song! It was most certainly omitted from our Adventist hymnal! Cyberhymnal.org is really a great site. Colleen |

Glad everyone liked it. I was shocked and wonderfully aghast when I first saw it... I had no idea that people understood His Sabbath-rest like that before, you know! Haha, that's my small mind, but it's okay. It's wonderful to know that people in the past have met Him, the same Guy we know! |

Thanks Jeremy, what a great website! Here is another hymn not in the Adventist hymnal: The Atoning Work Is Done Thomas Kelly, 1806 The atoning work is done, The Victim’Äôs blood is shed; And Jesus now is gone His people’Äôs cause to plead: He stands in Heaven their great High Priest, And bears their names upon His breast. He sprinkles with His blood The mercy-seat above; For justice had withstood The purposes of love: But justice now objects no more, And mercy yields her boundless store. No temple made with hands His place of service is; In Heaven itself He stands, A heavenly priesthood His: In Him the shadows of the law Are all fulfilled, and now withdraw. And though awhile He be Hid from the eyes of men, His people look to see Their great High Priest again: In brightest glory He will come, And take His waiting people home. I am not one to listen to tradional hymns much. I guess too many memories--but those brought tears to my eyes. Such a simple understanding of Jesus. |

Wow, Darrell! Thanks! I love that! It reminds me of this other one I stumbled on (again by Wesley)---
quote:'Tis finished! The Messiah dies by Charles Wesley http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/t/i/tisfinis.htm 'Tis finished! The Messiah dies, Cut off for sins, but not His own: Accomplished is the sacrifice, The great redeeming work is done. 'Tis finished! all the debt is paid; Justice divine is satisfied; The grand and full atonement made; God for a guilty world hath died. The veil is rent in Christ alone; The living way to Heaven is seen; The middle wall is broken down, And all mankind may enter in. The types and figures are fulfilled; Exacted is the legal pain; The precious promises are sealed; The spotless Lamb of God is slain. The reign of sin and death is o'er, And all may live from sin set free; Satan hath lost his mortal power; 'Tis swallowed up in victory. Saved from the legal curse I am, My Savior hangs on yonder tree: See there the meek, expiring Lamb! 'Tis finished! He expires for me. Accepted in the Well-beloved, And clothed in righteousness divine, I see the bar to heaven removed; And all Thy merits, Lord, are mine. Death, hell, and sin are now subdued; All grace is now to sinners given; And lo, I plead the atoning blood, And in Thy right I claim Thy Heaven!
My friend also introduced me to this next hymn by Charitie Bancroft, which speaks of the assurance we have in Jesus. The traditional tune to it is the same as "Sweet Hour of Prayer", but we like best the version on the "Hiding Place" CD by the group Selah.
quote:Before the throne of God above by Charitie Bancroft http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/b/e/beforetg.htm Before the throne of God above I have a strong and perfect plea. A great high Priest whose Name is Love Who ever lives and pleads for me. My name is graven on His hands, My name is written on His heart. I know that while in Heaven He stands No tongue can bid me thence depart. When Satan tempts me to despair And tells me of the guilt within, Upward I look and see Him there Who made an end of all my sin. Because the sinless Savior died My sinful soul is counted free. For God the just is satisfied To look on Him and pardon me. Behold Him there the risen Lamb, My perfect spotless righteousness, The great unchangeable I AM, King of glory and of grace, One in Himself I cannot die. My soul is purchased by His blood, My life is hid with Christ on high, With Christ my Savior and my God!

Browsing through a used bookstore today, I came across an old English hymnal and spotted this hymn inside, talking about the rest that comes from knowing the Holy Spirit. Recently it's also occured to me that John 14:27 is not independent of John 14:26.
quote:Blessed Quietness by Ma‚nie P. Fer‚gu‚son http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/b/l/blessedq.htm Joys are flowing like a river, Since the Comforter has come; He abides with us forever, Makes the trusting heart His home. (refrain) Blessed quietness, holy quietness, What assurance in my soul! On the stormy sea, He speaks peace to me, How the billows cease to roll! Bringing life and health and gladness, All around this heavenly Guest, Banished unbelief and sadness, Changed our weariness to rest. Like the rain that falls from Heaven, Like the sunlight from the sky, So the Holy Ghost is given, Coming on us from on high. See, a fruitful field is growing, Blessed fruit of righteousness; And the streams of life are flowing In the lonely wilderness. What a wonderful salvation, Where we always see His face! What perfect habitation, What a quiet resting place!

Since we are talking about worship music here I thought the following might be of interest. I saw it in the last couple of days on a blog I subscribe to. "Worship Matters" Sovereign Grace Songbook Now Available For over 20 years, Sovereign Grace has been seeking to write and publish biblically faithful, Christ-exalting, emotionally moving songs to serve our churches in congregational worship. Songs that help us, as John Piper has said, think truly so that we might feel duly. Songs that enable God's Word and purposes to be planted deeply in our hearts. About 7 years ago, we published our first songbook. I'm happy to let you know that we've finally updated that songbook and released a a two-volume set that contains nearly every song we've published for the past twenty one years, including Mark Altrogge's "I Stand in Awe," "Forever Grateful," and Vikki Cook's "Before the Throne of God Above." 258 songs in all. Our hope is that these songbooks will be a useful tool for families, small groups, and especially churches with musicians who are more comfortable reading music rather than playing by ear. Each song is presented in a 2-staff piano arrangement with chord symbols. ìSlashî chord symbols make it easy for both guitarists and bass players to use. In addition, each song includes from one to six Scripture references. We included the Scriptures both for personal reflection, and when leading others in worship. Indexes at the back of each book help you locate songs by title, first line, or Scripture reference. Each songbook, A-K and L-Z, can be purchased individually for $36, or you can purchase both volumes for $65 at the Sovereign Grace store. However, if you're buying for your church, you can get the set for $58 by applying here. In His hands, Richard rtruitt@mac.com

Richard, Those Sovereign Grace songs are awesome! A lot of them are by Keith Getty who wrote "In Christ Alone". I highly recommend C.J. Mahaney's web site at www.sovereigngrace.com Solid theology is also taught on that site. Stan |

Once I was flipping through someone's old songbook of "praise songs" (I like calling newer ones "worship songs" more these days), and I found this little song or chorus: quote:Rest, rest in Him Your work is through Lean back in His arms He'll work through you
I never got to hear it, but I loved the words because it was at a time when I was learning that Jesus is truly my rest, my Sabbath, and the song said it so plainly, "Rest in Him---your work is through!" I think the song was by David Fisher or David Fry, I can't remember... some name like that. Anyway, if you know it or where I can find the tune, let me know. Thanks. |

Hey Agapetos, do you know of google.com? ... ;) The song is by John Fischer, I stumbled upon an interesting site while searching for the song: http://www.pbc.org/dp/dcroper/models/0016.html Thanks for the song tip, it so nice and wonderful to just lean back in the arms of Jesus or God and just rest ... I could cry of joy over this. God is love!

Richard mentioned the Sovereign Grace songbook above that is associated with www.sovereigngrace.com site above. Here is an inspiring story related to that ministry where a rapper named "Voice" who was heavy into gangs came to Christ, and joined one of the Sovereign Grace churches: I Hear Voice Here's a biographical sketch of a warm, winsome, humble brother who has been saved by grace and is using his skills at rap--formerly used to celebrate sin and now being used to sing of the Savior--in order to edify the body of Christ. "Voice sought refuge in rap music from his fatherless upbringing and the mean streets of Washington, D.C. Voiceís rap sheet started around the same time he began listening to rap and hip-hopówhen he was 7 years old. It was the early 1980ís, and life in the hood was being lyricized by the likes of Run-DMC, KRS One, Doug E. Fresh, Eric B., and Rakim, and Big Daddy Kane. Those were the hip-hop pioneers who shaped Voiceís ear and his outlook. He began break dancing, then rapping. He practiced impromptu and spontaneous freestyle rap, calling himself MC Finnesse. He got into the studio... To read more click on this site: www.theologica.blogspot.com/2006/06/i-hear-voice.html Stan |

Two more "Sabbath" hymns I enjoyed finding! Blessings in Him our Sabbath-rest! Ramone quote:Blow Ye the Trumpet, Blow! http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/b/l/blowblow.htm Blow ye the trumpet, blow! The gladly solemn sound Let all the nations know, To earth's remotest bound: (refrain) The year of jubilee is come! The year of jubilee is come! Return, ye ransomed sinners, home. Jesus, our great high priest, Hath full atonement made, Ye weary spirits, rest; Ye mournful souls, be glad: Extol the Lamb of God, The sin atoning Lamb; Redemption by His blood Throughout the lands proclaim: Ye slaves of sin and hell, Your liberty receive, And safe in Jesus dwell, And blest in Jesus live: Ye who have sold for naught Your heritage above Shall have it back unbought, The gift of Jesus' love: The Gospel trumpet hear, The news of heavenly grace; And saved from earth, appear Before your Savior's face:
quote:Weary Souls, That Wander Wide http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/w/e/wearysou.htm Weary souls, who wander wide From the central point of bliss, Turn to Jesus crucified, Fly to those dear wounds of His: Sink into the purple flood; Rise into the life of God. Find in Christ the way of peace, Peace unspeakable, unknown; By His pain He gives you ease, Life by His expiring groan: Rise, exalted by His fall, Find in Christ your all in all. O believe the record true, God to you His Son hath given; Ye may now be happy, too, Find on earth the life of Heaven: Live the life of Heaven above, All the life of glorious love. This the universal bliss, Bliss for every soul designed; God's primeval promise this, God's great gift to all mankind: Blest in Christ this moment be, Blest to all eternity!

Thanks for the search, Mwh. I just tried a google search but it turned up only two results, both appearing to have been written by the same person who quoted the song and, ironically, missed the point by focusing on a Sabbath day instead of the Sabbath Person, Jesus Christ Himself, our Sabbath Rest. Go figure. Oh well. |

You know, looking back at these hymns, especially "Before the Throne of God Above", it seems like they were written for us who were Adventists, you know? LIke God inspired them knowing that someday they would touch a special place in our hearts, in our hearts that were weighed down for years and years not knowing the assurance of Him, His presence, and His finished work! I don't know how the FAF retreat was in February, but the next time you have one, I think it'd be wonderful to sing that song and others that we can all really join in on because we understand them & what it's like to be set free! (I hope I can make it to a retreat someday! That darned Pacific Ocean...!) |

Okay, I had to shout "YES!!!!" when I read this one! quote:All I Need Jesus Christ is made to me, All I need, all I need, He alone is all my plea, He is all I need. Wisdom righteousness and pow'r, Holiness forevermore, My redemption full and sure, He is all I need. Jesus is my all in all, All I need, all I need, While He keeps I cannot fall, He is all I need. He redeemed me when He died, All I need, all I need, I with Him was crucified, He is all I need. Glory, glory to the Lamb, All I need, all I need, By His Spirit sealed I am, He is all I need.

I wonder why this hymn never made it into the SDA hymnal... it seems to be very well known & beloved: quote:Here is Love Here is love, vast as the ocean, Lovingkindness as the flood, When the Prince of Life, our Ransom, Shed for us His precious blood. Who His love will not remember? Who can cease to sing His praise? He can never be forgotten, Throughout Heav'n's eternal days. On the mount of crucifixion, Fountains opened deep and wide; Through the floodgates of God's mercy Flowed a vast and gracious tide. Grace and love, like mighty rivers, Poured incessant from above, And Heav'n's peace and perfect justice Kissed a guilty world in love. Let me all Thy love accepting, Love Thee, ever all my days; Let me seek Thy kingdom only And my life be to Thy praise; Thou alone shalt be my glory, Nothing in the world I see. Thou hast cleansed and sanctified me, Thou Thyself hast set me free. In Thy truth Thou dost direct me By Thy Spirit through Thy Word; And Thy grace my need is meeting, As I trust in Thee, my Lord. Of Thy fullness Thou art pouring Thy great love and power on me, Without measure, full and boundless, Drawing out my heart to Thee.

I love that song, Ramone. We got it on a CD of hymns that were the "theme songs" of various revivals throughout the last 100+ years. This song was, I think, the song from the Welsh revival in the early part of the 20th C. It's wonderful. Colleen
