While I was browsing on the Spectrum website I found this www.myspace.com/ellenwhite

I found some of this quite funny, and hopefully will inject a little lighter note in all the Ellen discussions on this Saturday night.

Having grown up as a faculty kid at Andrews University, this reminds me of life in the little "New Jerusalem", as we called it. The kids at the downtown highschool would come over to Andrews Academy for "excitement".

Funny, haha, but freaky. :-)

My friend back at LSU who started the now defunct dramedy group Feat of Clay once thought of making a skit about EGW, a rap to Naughty By Nature's "OPP"...

"You down with Ellen G?
Yeah, you know me!
You down with Ellen G?
Yeah, you know me!
Who's down with Ellen G?
Yeah, all the missionaries!"

Stan, thanks for the hilarious link. Richard, Nathanael and I just hooted when we saw this.

Is anyone else struck by the tone of the comments by the "friends"? It's really sad, if you think about it. These are Adventist kids who love their exclusive culture and foodsóeven if only to make fun of it!ó(isn't it interesting that these entries are primarily about food?), but they have such an undertone of cynicism. Here they are, really making fun of the prophet that they really do, at some level, believe was God's messenger to them.

I completely understand themóI felt like they seem to feel for many years. It's sort of a "familiarity breeds contempt" attitude...

I feel both like laughing and like grieving for them, somehow...

In Romania we used underground jokes about our dicatator Ceausescu to keep our minds healthy. It protected us form feeling the awfull reality unbearable.

I'm wodnering about Ellen White's reaction, if she will be alive.

Colleen, Having grown up at Andrews as a faculty kid, I can identify completely with what you said. The thing is, when we are in the middle of it, it is hard to describe what the problem is. It is only when we get "outside" the Adventist culture that we see what a farce Ellen White's "inspired" writings are.

The whole Adventist lifestyle is not a "heart" religion. It is a "works" religion, and we knew we were all going to hell anyway -- according to Ellen White. That is what is so sad.

On a related subject, you are in the Pacific Union. I am really struck by the article in June 2006 Pacific Union Recorder on page 28 -- The Ten Commandments Commission: Where do Seventh-day Adventists Stand, by Alan J. Reinach. He happpens to be a relative, and close friend of mine. But the article is so sad. It misses the whole point of the New Covenant relationship we are suppose to enjoy.

On page 29 is a picture of a couple and child standing in front of a huge Ten Commandments. I don't see how something that large ever would have fit in the Ark of the Covenant! Below is the caption that says "Written in the Heart". A cursory reading of Romans 8 would clearly identify the Old Covenant (referred to as the Law od Sin and Death) as what was written in stone, while the New Covenant (referred to as the Law of the Spirit of Life) being what is written in the heart. I am continually amazed at how Adventist preaching, publications, etc, get so confused over something the Bible is so plain over.

I just go through reading David DePinho's testimony (http://www.ellenwhite.org/testimonydd.htm). It is excellent! If you have not yet read it, you need to because it identifies what is wrong with Adventist teaching in a way that is clear and concise. Excellent material!

Gilbert, you are so right. And I agree with you about DePinho's testimony. (It is also posted on the Stories page of this website.) It is excellent material.

I was also rereading David DePinho's testimony last week. It was good to review it again.

Colleen, the "Stories" page of this website has several wonderful testimonies. This page is truly an ongoing witness to those who are questioning their beliefs.I would like to thank those who took the time to tell their stories.

As I reviewed the links I was especially struck by the link off the www.myspace.com/ellenwhite page to http://www.myspace.com/ladyluckless . There is so much here that I can relate to. So many of my close friends at Andrews University (and later Southern "Missionary" College). Courtney is also a part of the "Andrews University -- Ellen White" culture. Between the pages soundtrack and the utter dispare expressed on the page, it is so haunting and painful. I know I was there. The dispair. The teachings of Ellen White, and the feelings at age 13 that there was absolutely no way that I could be good enough to ever make it to heaven, let alone through the time of trouble or the Investigative Judgement. It is a past journey that is almost to painful to even think about. And to think that the Seventh-day Adventist denomination is putting our young people through this kind of cultic mental anguish is criminal. It brings flashbacks of what I went through. Attending Pioneer Memorial Church. The frequent Ellen White quotes. Impossible diets. The impossible attempt to faithfully follow Ellen White's writings. The pain. The feelings of utter desparation. It's written all over this site, and many others connected to the Ellen White site. It is all to painful...

Thank you, Jesus, for rescuing me from Satan's mind-control called Adventism. I thought I had put all these feelings in a closet and closed the door.

Thank you, Jesus, that this IS NOT the way it really is.

People that promote Ellen White's false beliefs need to be locked up.

My 14 yo daughter receives a quote of the day in her e-mail today it was from guess who? some thing from Testamonies the funny thing was it was about keeping good company but digressed into making yourself perfect for the close of probation. I'm sure non-SDA would never of know what that ment only catching to make sure you have good friends.

Violet, I wonder how many people chose to "Click this icon to engrave the quote on mugs, bookmarks, t-shirts and much more"!

I found that Ellen White MySpace page to be quite sad--and sickening to see all of those people "speak" messages of love to a dead person--and a false prophet at that!

Speaking of the Pacific Union Recorder, did anyone see the article about the can of Nuteena that sold for $540.00 on eBay?!

I remember that sermon where Pastor Oberg mentioned the joke about Nuteena! (Calimesa was my home church). And, I remember her kidding about it going on eBay. At that time, it was still in the joke phase :-).

That was actually the last sermon I heard in that church. She was doing a whole sermon series on Adventist Heritage. I had already had a lot of questions about Adventism during that time (last Fall), but thought I could still remain Adventist without having to be a "historical" Adventist. I thought I could kind of compromise because Calimesa Church was pretty "evangelical" compared to the churches I was brought up in. We had been visiting "Sunday" churches, but weren't quite comfortable with it yet. Plus, I liked Pastor Chris Oberg's sermons. But when she started the Adventist Heritage series, it was a bit unsettling to me, because it had that undertone of Adventist pride that I was trying to wean myself away from. So my husband and I decided to stop going to church temporarily until the sermon series was finished.

In the meantime, I started lurking on this forum more frequently, and studying the Bible more in depth (especially on Sabbaths to ease my guilt of skipping church -- ironic, I know) to help answer all of my many questions. Of course, it was just a matter of time before I realized it was very difficult, if not impossible, to be a true evangelical Adventist. Amazing how everything worked out actually. I would have never guessed that I would have not gone back, much less actually claim myself as a "former".

Anyway, never ended up going back. Never heard that the Nuteena thing actually did make it on eBay!! Thanks Jeremy for the follow-up info :-). That's kind of humorous -- in a really kind of disturbing way :-).

Funny how God works in our lives, huh? I'm constantly in awe as God's will continues to unfold in my life, and how much He uses the most interesting situations, or unexpected people to bring us closer to Him. I'm learning to love and look with eager expectation towards His "surprises" in my life. Worshipping a sovereign God is so reassuring; I'm glad He's in control. If it were up to my plans and desires, I'd probably still be fooling myself into being an evangelical Adventist, and I would have unknowingly missed out on knowing what it means to really love God, and never fully realize how much God really loves me. I'm glad God had other plans (not my plans), for me. God is awesome!

Grace,
Thank-you for that wonderful testimony. It has been great following your journey out of bondage into freedom these last few months.

Isn't it great to have an experience and relationship with God that is unfettered by the dictates and opinions of others.

Isn't it great to finally have Good News that you are happy to share with anybody.

Isn't it great to know we can have spiritual peace because "It Is Finished".

Isn't it great to know that we are accepted and loved how we are. We are acceptable to God because of our relationship with Jesus, and not because we kept the rules better.

My pastor last summer preached a sermon where he said, "before one can share good news, one has to be good news". Every so often I remember a snippet of his sermons and this is one of the snippets. I ask God each day to make me "good news".

Randyg -- Yes! It is great!! :-)

Kind of a funny side note about the Nuteena thing. I was talking with the girls at work today before we left for the evening about how the can of Nuteena sold on eBay for $540 (I just find that so humorous). Of course, before explaining about the bid, I had to explain the product (which is pretty wierd to describe), and had to explain how Loma Linda foods makes it, and it's owned by the SDA church, etc., etc... They weren't nearly as impressed with the sale of the can for $540 as they were that SDAs make their own foods. My receptionist (who grew up JW) said, "Let me get this straight. You have your own books, you have your own schools, you have your own television station [3ABN], and you make your own foods. You literally lived, breathed, and ate Adventism in every part of your life. And you didn't see anything wrong with this until recently?! That's messed up! No wonder you have issues!"

It's still kind of shocking to me how things that seemed so "normal", really is odd to others who weren't a part of it. I remember the first time telling someone who was non-SDA about the Sunday Law. I could barely get through the discussion of it without laughing. As I listened to myself explain it out loud, and saw her face expressions in reaction to what I was saying, I realized how completely nuts and rediculous the whole conspiracy theory was. It was kind of one of those experiences today as I tried to explain Nuteena, where you can get it, and how you eat it, what foods it's good with, etc. The fact that I know so much about this wierd, canned, peanut based stuff is just odd. It's not normal :-).

Grace, I think I can explain Nuteena easier than the Sunday Law. :-)

I guess I'll never be a lawyer. . . :-)

Richard

PS: It's good to see your posting when you have the time. I'm now down to about 2 weeks of school . . . but then there is summer school. :-)

Ha! Grace, your post makes me laugh!

You know, you have a really good point. This stuff doesn't seem weird only because it's so FAMILIAR!

You're right, it's not normal! (Praise GodóHe redeems our past!)
