I ran across this article by mistake while searching for something else on the web today, and find it interesting. Has anyone ever seen this article before? www.rapidnet.com/~jbeard/bdm/Cults/sda/martin.htm Since I have a deep respect as a friend of his, and since he was a spiritual mentor to me, I kind of hate to bring up anything critical of Dr. Martin. However even he admitted toward the end of his life that he may have made a mistake in his classifying SDA. There was another great book that came out about two years after Martin's analysis of SDA calling Martin's analysis into dispute. And that is Dr. Anthony Hoekema's book "The Four Major Cults", which equated SDA with JW, Mormon, and Christian Science. I wonder why Hoekema was not given equal billing to Martin. Infact, Hoekema's academic credentials were every bit as good as Martin's. But his book has been forgotten about. There was also a good article in a Proclamation article about 1 year ago by Steve Pitcher who revisited this issue with Martin. Sometimes the evangelical church sets up certain folks such as Martin and now Hank Hanegraaf as somehow the last word on a subject and that is too bad, as then debate is stopped, since these experts have spoken. I just read the link you posted above. I can see why he disagrees with Dr. Martin. I do agree that the SDA church is a cult. Diana |

Stan, I think the book, "The Four Major Cults" may not be getting circulated because it may have not been marketed well. On Amazon it is $24 used and $36 new. I don't think most people want to spend that much money to learn about the four groups, if they even know the book exists. If they lower the price a bit and give it away for free to many university professors and the like, and try to get it into more libraries, it may be read more. However, Anthony A. Hoekema died in 1988. So it would be the responsibility of whoever inherited the rights to his books to make such an effort. And who would who inherited the rights to the book? Lynne

In the last sentence I meant to say: And who would "know" who inherited the rights to the book?

There is actually a version with only the SDA material in that Hoekema book which may be a lot cheaper.

I think it was published in 1974. I just bought one for a nickle on half.com at: http://product.half.ebay.com/_W0QQprZ1462913QQcpidZ3207329

Stan, Thank-you for the article. When I purchased and read Dr.Martin's Kingdom of the Cults I thought he was being awfully generous in his understanding of Adventism. I am now sure he was duped and hoodwinked like the rest of us. If it could happen to him, it is understandable that it can happen to anyone. Thank-you again, Randy
