Hello everyone. I just thought that, on a lighter note, you all would find this link interesting? http://www.adherents.com/largecom/fam_sda.html. There are a few of these famous people that I had no idea were former, current or even "lapsed" SDA's.

Wow, I hadn't seen that site in a while. They have a lot more details, etc., then they used to. I didn't know that Paul Harvey is actually an SDA now, and even attends the Camelback church in Phoenix (in winter), which I attended for a year.

He always liked EGW and her Counsels on Diet and Foods--I don't understand why he didn't see how ridiculous it is!

I used to attend the same SDA church as the famous 1950's R&B singer, "Little Richard" His real name is Richard Penniman. He was also the key gospel soloist for the revivals my former SDA church used to hold during the early 1990's in Compton, CA. He is truly a very, very, nice person. Very positive, and a pleasure to talk with. Of course, he had big crowd "drawing" power during these revivals. The meetings would be packed (more people came to hear and see "Little Richard" sing than to hear the SDA message)! I know I would invite my friends to the revival meetings just to hear and meet "Little Richard". He was really a devout SDA until the SDA conference refused to ordain him as an elder (We were never told the exact reason why they refused to ordain him. He had renounced homosexuality, premarital sex, drugs, etc) as a result of this, he had a big "falling out" with the SDA General Conference, as well as with the evangelist conducting the meetings. As a result of this he kind of "cooled off" as far as Adventism was concerned. He went back to doing secular movies, tv, concerts, etc. It would be interesting to know if any others in our Former Adventist online group had any experiences with current or former SDA celebrities.

Little Richard used to give out tons of "Steps to Christ" books at the intermission of his rock concerts. I had heard that he is now a convert to Judaism, but can't prove or confirm that.
Paul Harvey's wife has been SDA for a long time, but I hadn't heard he joined. I thought he was too smart for that. Oh well...

Shortly after Little Richard became a SDA he came through our small NM town and held a series of meetings in a very small church. This was only two or three years after his hits like "Lucille" had topped that charts so even as a small child I was star-struck and had to go see him. He was a powerful preacher and a lovely person. Someone should encourage him to join this site if he is still sorting out his SDA issues.

Jeremy, I tried reading Counsils On Diets And Foods once. When I got to the part that she says it is wrong to combine milk and sugar because it becomes alcohol I threw the book away. I'd never heard of anyone getting a ticket for drunk driving from a milkshake!

I have been with the understanding Sojourner Truth knew EGW and attended SDA meetings but she never actually became a member of the SDA denomination. Could someone let me know what is accurate about this?

They've really expanded that site.
One book they don't mention is LA Cofidential.
The movie was great, but I couldn't quite wade through the book.
Anyways, in the book, set in the 50's, a cop shoots and kills an innocent bystanding couple. The ME covers it up, and the kids back East don't ask any questions, beacuase "they're SDAs, and SDAs don't belive in autopsies."
I've never heard of that before! Has anyone else, or did the author get his religious groups crossed up?

Thank-you, Valerie. However, I am stuck at a campground way out in the wildereness in Hawaii. I have no e-mail here and very little access to a phone. I can use this computer at the camp lounge. I'll get in touch with you when I get back to California, which I hope will be real soon. I developed a read bad eye infection and I want that to heal before I go home. Thanks so much for thinking of me. I still have your phone number so I'll call in a month or so. Also, I am so looking forward to our meeting in February at the FAF Bash.

I was listening to Paul Harvey this morning on the way to work and he was supporting the use of soy products. I would of never of given it a second thought until this thread. Now I wonder if he has an agenda. I am so bad.

Violet, I do not believe you are "bad". When our eyes begin to open, we begin to see more of reality. Many of our rose-colored filters come off, and we actually have more discernment.

As God reveals Himself to us, truth becomes increasingly clear, and agendas leading away from truth become increasingly clear. Discernment in a Christ-follower is a gift of the Spirit.

I can't speak to Paul Harvey's motives. I believe that he really believes much of the SDA health message, etc. His possible sincerity doesn't make him accurate, it just makes him dangerous because people who don't know the background think he's telling them the truth.

This situation illustrates to me another way that Jesus sets us free by revealing truth to us. Truth is what is REAL--it is the reality of Jesus and His finished work; it is the reality of our own intrinsic unworthiness and the need of a Savior; it the the reality that we have, in our spiritual darkness, believed deception as if it were truth; it is the reality that Jesus draws us out of our delusions and denial at the personal level as He draws us deeper into relationship with Him.

Your question is valid, Violet. Understanding Harvey's long-standing compromise--conscious or not--with Adventism gives us the understanding we need to pray that God will both lead him to truth and protect those who might be deceived by his endorsement.

Praise God for wasting nothing and redeeming everything we submit to Him!

What bothers me is how easy it would be for someone to listen to him, hear the soy message, happen onto an Adventist and the familiar message is repeated. Then they are enticed to hear the rest of the story--and they are sucked into the vacuum of works.
