This web site was started by a couple I met at church this winter. I would like you to check it out and let me know what you think.

Diana,
The website you've posted about looks intriguing; they contend that religion is "bad" but Christianity is "good". I agree with that thought, that going through a set of religious motions doesn't help or save anyone, but having a real relationship with Jesus makes one a real Christian and is the only way to be saved.

Have you read the book promoted on there, "The Truth Will Set You Free"? It looks like it could be an excellent book for sharing the message of grace alone. I'm curious as to why they have a chapter called "Sabbath" when it appears their background was Catholic. Also, I can certainly relate to their comments about errors divide and truth unites, and that's why there are so many denominations--each insisting on separating from other Christians over a unique error. And yet, it seems they certainly believe the Body of Christ is Christians within every church. So I wonder what they're suggesting--belonging to a nondenominational church? In fact, that's kind of exactly what we're currently mulling over right now, whether it's better to belong to a denominational or nondenominational church. It seems that too often the non-denoms, since the pastor has no one to answer to, can radically change with each change of the pastor--which can be good or bad. On the other hand, we've seriously considered the Missouri Synod Lutheran church because Lutheran theology seems to have the Law/Gospel (including discontinuance of the Sabbath) right, and yet it drives me crazy that this particular denomination insists that to be a member you have to believe in consubstantiation. It seems the only reason they insist on that belief is not because it's plainly stated in the Bible, but because that is the way Martin Luther interpreted the Bible. Doesn't sound much different to me than the way SDA's use EGW. It's dividing over unique understandings that are either outright errors or totally unprovable--the main problem of denominational churches.

Guess I got off on a tangent. What else do you know about this couple?

They almost became SDAs when they lived in Florida. They studied SDA beliefs. I am not sure if they became connected with adventism through a Revelations seminar.
Because I am so new out of adventism and have only studied the Bible for the last year, I want others who have studied more than I have to evaluate this for me. Everything I have read sounds Biblical.
They started a Bible study in their home which I went to for a while. I was uncomfortable and I still cannot say why, so I quit going. Part of the reason was instead of studying right from the Bible we were studying the chapters of her book.
Thanks for checking this out.

Yes, I would also be uncomfortable with a Bible study being done from a book other than the Bible--especially their own book. Using their own book for the study makes it look like they place their personal interpretation as superior. I liked their attitude that it doesn't matter what any religious leader says if it doesn't line up with the Bible--the Holy Spirit will teach you in your own study of the Bible. However, from your second post, I would wonder if they probably use that very attitude to condone they know they're okay, but everyone else should be suspect.

Diana,

Oh how I can relate to your feelings of "I was uncomfortable and I still cannot say why". I went through those same feelings when I was studying with my "teacher" who taught what I now know were unbiblical teachings and gave incorrect interpretations of the Bible. There's a reason you felt uncomfortable. Do not discount that.

I agree with Kathy, Diana. I looked through the website, and while I can't specifically identify unbiblical teachings (I did not, I admit, look through all the book chapters available), still I am concerned, as you were, that they were having a study out of her own book. Any time someone has an "understanding" they need to teach instead of teaching from the Bible (and sometimes people use the Bible to teach their "understanding"), there's a red flag there.

If you're feeling uncomfortable in a Bible study and you're praying to be gounded in truth, you're right to leave.

Colleen
