Since I love both contemporary music and hymns the recent album of hymns performed by Jars of Clay was a no-brainer for me. One hymn from the album really sticks with me long after listening.

Let us love and sing and wonder
John Newton

1. Let us love and sing and wonder
Let us praise the Saviorís name
He has hushed the lawís loud thunder
He has quenched Mount Sinaiís flame
He has washed us with His blood (x3)
He has brought us nigh to God

2. Let us love the Lord Who bought us
Pitied us when enemies
Called us by His grace and taught us
Gave us ears and gave us eyes
He has washed us with His blood (x3)
He presents our souls to God

3. Let us sing though fierce temptation
Threaten hard to bear us down
For the Lord, our strong salvation,
Holds in view the conquírorís crown
He, Who washed us with His blood, (x3)
Soon will bring us home to God

4. Let us wonder grace and justice
Join and point to mercyís store
When through grace in Christ our trust is
Justice smiles and asks no more
He Who washed us with His blood (x3)
Has secured our way to God

5. Let us praise and join the chorus
Of the saints enthroned on high
Here they trusted Him before us
Now their praises fill the sky
Thou hast washed us with Thy blood (x3)
Thou art worthy Lamb of God

Last Sunday my husband and I were able to lead worship at our new church. I always worship "better" (is that PC??) when I am playing as well as singing (or thinking the words in my head!). We taught a song new to the church, one that I had only previously heard on the radio, and at a conference where the author led worship. It's called "Offering" by Paul Baloche, known for writing "Above All," and "Open the Eyes of My Heart."

The sun cannot compare to the glory of Your love
There is no shadow in Your presence
No mortal man would dare to stand before Your throne
Before the Holy One of Heaven

And itís only by Your blood
And itís only by Your mercy
Lord, I come

I bring an offering of worship to my King
No one on Earth deserves the praises that I sing
Jesus, may You receive the honour that youíre due
Oh, Lord, I bring an offering to you.

You can listen to it here: http://www.gospelcom.net/baloche/resources/songbook.html

After the sermon, we sang the wonderful hymn, "How Great Thou Art." My favorite line in the song is
"Then sings my soul...." because that is what truly happens. Worship through music for me goes far beyond my lips and my brain, when I play or sing, it goes right to, then from, my soul.

There is also an album of hymns by 4Him that is really good! It has songs like The Solid Rock, Be Thou My Vision, When Peace Like a River, O Sacred Head, Holy, Holy, Holy, The Love of God, Great is Thy Faithfulness. I cry every time I listen to it. The songs & words mean so much more to me now that I've found freedom in Christ!

Melinda,I have that 4Him cd. I love "The Solid Rock." Last night we went to our home group from church and we had a evening devoted to singing hymns and discussing them. (our service on Sunday is contemporary with a few hymns now and then.) There were plenty of tears from quite a few present. I have also been introduced to hymns I never sang growing up sda. "Before the Throne of God Above" and "Man of Sorrows" are two of the ones I don't remember seeing in the sda hymnal. There is an interesting site devoted to hymns, their authors, and backgounds. http://www.cyberhymnal.org/

So many songs....right now some of my favorite choruses are "Give us Clean Hands", "Enough" and "The Potter's Hand"....

"Give Us Clean Hands"

We bow our hearts, We bend our knees
O' spirit come make us humble
We turn our eyes, From evil things
O' Lord we cast down our idols.

Give us clean hands, Give us pure hearts
Let us not lift our souls to another

O' God let us be, A generation that seeks,
That seeks Your face, O' God of Jacob

"Enough"

chorus:
all of you is more than enough for all of me
for every thirst and every need
you satisfy me with your love
all I have in you is more than enough

you are my supply, my breath of life
still more awesome than I know
you are my reward, worth living for
still more awesome than I know

chorus

Your my sacrifice of greatest price,
still more awesome than I know
you're my coming king, you are everything
still more awesome than I know

chorus...

"The Potter's Hand"

Beautiful Lord, wonderful Saviour
I know for sure all of my days are held in Your hand.
Crafted into Your perfect plan.

You gently call me into Your presence
Guiding me by Your Holy Spirit, teach me dear Lord.
To live all of my life through your eyes.

I'm captured by Your holy calling
Set me apart, I know You're drawing me to Yourself
Lead me Lord, I pray.

CHORUS:
Take me, mold me, use me, fill me,
I give my life to the Potter's hand.
Call me, guide me, lead me, walk beside me
I give my life, to the Potter's hand.
--------

I could go on.... Nothing ministers to me like music. Favorite group, mercyme; favorite individual, MWSmith.

There was a little chorus I heard in a play when I was in high school, and I actually used one of those old cassette recorders to record the song because it touched me so much.

Through the rain, through the pain,
through the loss and through the gain,
I believe in you.

Through the glad, through the sad
through the good times, and the bad,
I believe in you

Through the wrong, through the right
through the rest and through the fight
if I'm waiting in the dark, or if I'm walking in the light,
when I run, when I fall, Lord I believe in you.

It has verses, but when I am sad, or feeling gloomy or melancholy, that little chorus comes to my mind and reminds me of my foundation. I wish it was recorded somewhere now, but I've long since lost the tape. But I listened to it over and over in high school as I had a lot of trials.

I have a song for most all occasions.... :-)

Here's an awesome one by Phillips, Craig and Dean called "You Are God Alone":

You are not a god
Created by human hands
You are not a god
Dependent on any mortal man
You are not a God
In need of anything we can give
By Your plan, that's just the way it is

Chorus:
You are God alone
From before time began
You were on Your throne
You are God alone
And right now
In the good times and bad
You are on Your throne
You are God alone

You're the only God
Whose power none can contend
You're the only God
Whose name and praise will never end
You're the only God
Who's worthy of everything we can give
You are God
And that's just the way it is

Bridge:
Unchangeable, unshakeable, unstoppable,
That's what you are
Unchangeable, unshakeable, unstoppable,
That's what you are

Crank it up!!

You Are God Alone is so powerful! Thanks for posting the words, Heretic. I love singing that song to the Lord. This morning as I was making my coffee, that song was on my mind and I couldn't help but raise my hand high right there in the kitchen by myself when I got to the part

You are not a god
Dependent on any mortal man
You are not a God
In need of anything we can give
By Your plan, that's just the way it is!!

Like you said, Colleen, I love realizing that God truly is sovereign. It is so comforting.

Oh, Leigh--I know what you mean! I fnd myelf raising my hand high when I'm alone in my kitchen often! And isn't it amazing how God often puts songs into our minds when we awaken in the morning? I've have the words/music of "Hallelujah! Grace like rain falls down on me..." in my head this week almost every morning.

He truly puts a song in my heart.

I am just learning Christian songs from my church and I really like how God is praised in each song. As an SDA I did not buy SDA music to listen to an sabbath. Couldn't afford it. I am glad now I could not, so my son missed that indoctrination also. Thank you God. While singing at church I am beginning to lift my hand while I sing when it is a God centered song. I do not know the words of all these songs, but I am learning them. Praise God for God centered music. God you are awesome.

If you like the Canadian Brass, hunt for recordings by the German Brass. In some ways they are even better than the Canadians! Have you heard the Canadian Brass version of Amazing Grace that's posted on their website? Randy, you might also like www.jazzplayerradio.com
