I watched Jay Leno last night because I like his Headlines routine, and what do you know, he led off with Signs of the Times! (BTW Headlines features anything Jay Leno finds funny about the way news is presented, usually typos and pictures that result in double entendres)I looked on the website, and previous Headline monologues are given, but the one from Monday isn't up yet. I found the picture he posted here http://www.signstimes.com/sep/index.php He said it looked like Jesus was battling someone with a light saber. Hehe. Why does Jesus need a light saber anyway? I will post his actual comments as soon as they are available on the nbc website. Its stuff like this that makes Christians everywhere cringe.
Humorously,
Hannah

What a cover! I could go on and on about that whole concept.

All Jesus would have to say is "Luc....I am your father!"

That article (at least the picture) makes Jesus look like he and Satan are equal foes. It also makes Jesus look like less than God and very human...like Jay said. "Jesus needs a light saber??????" I think not, since He thought/commanded the world into existance, and let's not forget He created Satan! Just another little bit of proof of how they SDA view Jesus and reduce Him to much less than God in the flesh!

That's how I also see the cover. Like equal contenders.

I'm sure the Mormons would endorse this concept.

Even the Jehovah Witnesses would encourage Jesus to use the "force"*.

Looking at the cover of the SIGNS two texts came to mind: Jn 8:12, "I AM the LIGHT...." and Ph 2:9-11,if I may paraphrase: God has exalted Him (Greek "superexalted")to the highest place and gave him a name so powerful and mighty that at the mear utterance of that name, JESUS, every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth (seems to cover Satan there) and every tongue confess that this Jesus Christ IS the LORD, the only Lord, and all this glorifies the Father God. No "light sword" needed here, folks! It is HIS MAJESTY we love and serve. Just the mention of His name and every creature melts into humility. And as the throng dances out of the theater, praising HIS MAJESTY, Satan is left alone, on his knees (if you will permit me freedom of a wild imagination) stretching out his arms muttering a pitiful "Bu..Bu...Bu...But.....?" And the only person now to notice him with his "light sword" lying beside him, flickering on and off with dim light because his batteries have failed, is the custodian sweeping up the popcorn.

Think of it! Our King IS the LIGHT! The Source and the Supply of all that is! True REALITY (Col 2:17).

PAGL* to all,

JWD

The article ended with the following thought:

"Now, here's a principle that's so crucial that it needs emphasis: Those who want a place in God's eternal kingdom someday must experience this change of heart now.

It's a simple matter to experience this change of heart. Just ask God to place His Spirit within you. You may not notice a dramatic change, but if you cultivate this relationship with God through Bible reading and prayer, you'll begin to notice a difference in the way you think and feel. And those who truly experience it say that it's wonderful.

Why not try it? Just say this prayer: "God, please come into my heart right now and begin the changes in me that will begin making me become like You.""

This heavenly battle, sans the light sabers, is right out of "Paradise Lost" by John Milton. It seems to have captured Ellen's imagination enough to have included it on his top ten list of "Things to Plagarize".

I have a copy of that Signs at my house. Over where I live are several newspaper dispensors that give out free Signs to anyone who wants to grab one (or a handfull for the trash). I thought it looked like something out of Star Wars, too. Since Jesus IS the truth, the light and the way and since the SDA claims EGW is the lessor light I would have thought they'd have Jesus on the cover with a plastic inflateable EGW doll to do battle with satan. If I had any artiostic talent at all I'd draw that and submit it to the Signs for a future cover. Generally I have found the articles in the Signs to be very poor quality. They are written in a way that "talks down" to the reader and generally the articles are extremely un and anti-Bibical. Thanks for watching Jay Leno, unfortunatelly I missed watching him that night. You can go to the Jay Leno website and see all the funny stuff that he has on.

Welcome, JWD! Glad to see you here, and we look forward to hearing your story and comments.

Thanks for quoting the end of the accompanying article, Richard. One thing stands out to me, though--(admittedly I did not read the whole thing)--it invites people to begin a relationship with God by inviting the Holy Spirit into their hearts. It does not mention Jesus.

I've grown increasingly aware that very often, Adventism does not stress people's need to admit their utter depravity and need of a Savior. Similarly, they don't emphasize accepting Jesus as the way to have a relationship with God.

The Bible does not instruct us to ask the Holy Spirit to come into us to begin a relationship with God. Rather, it is clear that we are to humble ourselves before Jesus, accept His shed blood to cover our intractable sin, and then AUTOMATICALLY the Holy Spirit is placed within us (Ephesians 1:13).

Our conversion centers on our accepting Jesus, not upon our asking for the Holy Spirit or wanting to relate to God. Our conversion is grounded in confession and repentance and surrender to Jesus.

When we bypass the whole ugly part of realizing our deep sinfulness and our need of Jesus' blood, we miss the actual power and reality that changes us.

The Holy Spirit's purpose is to testify of Jesus. We can't hope to be new people with new lives if we do not do business with Jesus.

I guess I'm especially sensitive to this after spending so much time researching the current views of the investigative judgment and the corresponding views of the atonement. Even though it has all the right labels and language, Adventism obscures the centrality of the cross. It can talk quit freely about relating to God and having the Holy Spirit, but they don't deal with Jesus and His blood except perfunctorily.

As Elizabeth Inrig said in a study recently, It's not enough to accurately know who Jesus is. Many religions will say He is the Son of God. The real issue that determines whether or not a church is authentically Christian is its understanding of Jesus' role in salvation. You can have His identity "right" but skew the atonement, and you're left with hollowness.

Praise Jesus for His obedience unto death.

With Star Wars coming out with a new movie, this is just another attempt to lure more readers. It makes you stop for a moment to check it out. Unfortunately new believers may be confused or worse.

Regarding that quote, I agree with you Colleen. Once again, it's all about becoming holy and righteous ["God, please come into my heart right now and begin the changes in me that will begin making me become like You."]--rather than Jesus shedding His blood for us and forgiving us of our sins and giving us the free gift of eternal life!

A Jew or Muslim would even pray that prayer to "God"!

The SIGNS cover, in a most sensational manner, portrays the false concept of dualism (the "great controversy between Christ and Satan"). A sidebar of the Pacific Press link tells "...how Planet Earth is still the theater for that war..." Any shades of dualism which contend that there are two equal powers opposing each other (good and evil) is a false doctrine not founded on the Scriptural view. According to the Scriptural evidence, there is only one power that is omnipotent, not two. Satan became a defeated foe at Calvary. Indeed, the war between Christ and Satan ended at the cross.

Sadly, the SIGNS editorial staff did not choose to highlight the Christ Event. Satan and his angels know that their time is short. They NEVER have a good day. Satan and his angels are fully aware that the quick-fix of annihilationism is not their future. Furthermore, mass suicide and/or being zapped out of existence is not God's sovereign will for them.

That picture is blasphemous. Satan is not equal with Jesus. He is DEFEATED AND HAS BEEN SINCE THE CROSS AND JESUS RESURRECTION. I should not be amazed by what the SDAs do, but every time I hear about something like this or read how sneaky, conniving or uncaring and morally undone the church is I am amazed.
I, also, like the sentence Dennis wrote, "They NEVER have a good day." Until I accepted Jesus Christ last year, I thought I would sin to the hilt because in the end I would die in the lake of fire and would not have to worry about it any more. I am so glad I do not think like that any more. Jesus has so much for me and He is all I need. Jesus, you are awesome.

I was scanning through recent posts and the title on Jay Leno and Adventism caught my attention. I'm usually a faithful Letterman watcher, but I TiVo Leno on Mondays for the Headlines feature. I think the picture in Signs if hilarious, but then like Diana said, I shouldn't be surprised, but I am anyway. I mean, WOW. How much more warped can they get? Yet, it's completely in line with what EGW and the rest of the church believe to the Present Truth, that there is this huge controversy between Jesus and Satan and that in the end humanity has to prove God's holiness. Yeah, sure. Let me know when pigs fly.
