Yossariana, I went to the website you posted above. They're pretty spun over there. I thought just out of currosity I'd read the discussion about EGW's infamous amalgamation of man and beast statement. The first poster thinks EGW is referring to the people in the last days (I'm asssuming he means SDA's.) who have the truth are not to mingle and mix with Bayalyon (I'm assuming he means all Christians.). Then the discussion gets more loony. Someone thinks it was when the early humans started worshiping the dionasurs. Another thinks the fallan angels did genetic engerring and made some interesting species. Not even one Bible text is ever presented. It's all defending EGW and speculation of weird, science fiction sounding theories. It's really a farout site. |

Is there an SDA teaching about Dinosaurs I need to understand? B talks about them quite a bit. He acts like he has more information about them than is available otherwise, but he acts that way about seemingly everything, so it's hard to know what's him and what is adventism. |

Yes, Melissa. SDAs do tend to think they have the final answers on dinosaurs. Perhaps someone like Jeremy that has an encylopedic knowledge of EGW could help with this, but I think the SDA understanding on dinosaurs in a cultural lore that is loosely extrapolated from EGW's writings (i.e. EGW didn't write explicitly on the topic, to the best of my knowledge, but SDAs have taken what she did write on the antedeluvians and created a lore around it). It goes like this: The antedeluvians were extrememly intelligent and extrememly advanced. In many ways they were more advanced then today's culture. One of their biggest sins was playing God and messing with God's creation. They sinned by mixing animal species and coming up with monstrosities like the dinosaurs. When God sent the glood to wipe out the people, He also wiped out the amalgamated creatures they had created including all the dinosaurs. The dinosaurs died in the flood because they were not part of God's creation. I hope this helps. Chris |

Er.... that should be "flood" rather than "glood".

That is very "interesting"....I hadn't come across that tidbit yet. But I haven't heard of the antedeluvians either. My ignorance is hanging out.... Thanks for the information, Chris. |

Just for the record, the "Antedeluvians" are not a SDA creation. The term "Antedeluvian" isn't SDA in origin or use. "Ante" means "before" and "deluvian" refers to the "deluge" or "flood". So the term refers to all those living prior to Noah's flood. Chris |

Kind of like Antebellum (before the war) is used in the Southern US States to refer to the era before the civil war! |

OOOOOOOh, One of those "theological terms" . And new war terms... I did learn something today I hadn't really heard of "decalogue" until B either. I guess I've been really sheltered, or out of touch! |

Melissa, I am 53 years old. I was explisily taught in 5th grade at an SDA school by my EGW devotee teacher that dionasuars never were, they 100% totally never existed. She taught us kids that satan put those bones in just the right formation so that when people would find them they would not believe the earth and everything on the earth is 6,000 years old, no more, no less. Because, if anyone believed the earth was over 6,000 years old, which they would have to believe if they believed the dionasuars had really existed, then they wouldn't have to believe the creation story like it is laid out in Genesis and then wouldn't have to believe the truth of the Sabbath like where it said God rested from all His work on the seventh-day. So, to make the story short-satan put those fake bones there to keep people from observing the true Sabbath. It was in this 5th grade class at age 11 when I decided when I grew up I was not going to go to my parents church anymore. Why? Because I loved reading National Geographic Magazine (still do) and I knew NG was way smarter than my teacher could ever dream of being. I think the SDA church continued teaching this nonsense well into the late 1970's and then they switched to the theory that Chris mentions above. |

But it's a goodin' for sure! lol P.S. you and a few others had asked me some quetions on another thread and I cannot find the thread. Do you remember which one it was? Thanks! |

I also heard the tale of the dinasours being "created" by the advanced science before the flood and that God destroyed them. However, I heard a Baptist preacher discuss this and I thought this made sense. He said that before the flood when things lived for hundreds of years, that creatures like lizards continued to grow. He stated that this species never stops growing or something like that. It was very interesting and made sense scientifically.

Yes, I've heard both Chris's explanation (actually, that was the one I grew up hearing), and the "God planted the bones in the earth" theory to explain how something that tests out to be older than 6K years can be in the ground. It also gets hard to explain the more recent discoveries of dinosaur nesting grounds, eggs, footprints, etc. if one says God wiped them out in the flood. The flood would have destroyed such evidence. That has got to be the most stupid thing I've heard. The Bible plainly says two of each animal went into the ark. Obiviousely, the dionasaurs did not go into the ark so they were extinct long before the flood. I think they should get out their National Geographics and do some serious studying! |

If my memory serves me correctly, Ellen White stated that the primary reason why the dinosaurs were allowed to became extinct was that man, in his degenerate condition, could no longer cope with such huge mammals. Consequently, God allowed their extinction during the Flood. Perhaps Jeremy can find the exact EGW quote. Dennis Fischer |

I remember that dinosaur theory to confuse the origins of man. The Flinstones are proof enough for me that they did exist. |

To all, This is great stuff, but not all entirely unique to SDA or EGW. In the 1800's there was quite a bit of theological "science", arguing that all the evidence for millions of years of history was actually done by God at creation, so that the earth would appear to have a longer history than it actually did. Why He would do something like that, I don't know. SDAs of course, flavor this "science" their way. I also remember something from growing up, that supposedly the antedelluvians were 3 times taller than we are. (Being the nerd that I am, I immediately calculated that that would make them 27 times bigger than us, overall.) Did anyone else hear this 3 times taller thing? Tom |

Oh, and as I mentioned on another thread, there was once a scholarly book from this era arguing about whether or not Adam and Eve had navels or not. The end result of the "scientific method" applied here was that no, they did not have navels. To me, "Did Adam and Eve have navels" sounds more like a Zen question! |
