From Ellen White: " Tea and coffee, as well as tobacco, have an injurious effect upon the system. Tea is intoxicating; though less in degree, its effect is the same in character as that of spirituous liquors. Coffee has a greater tendency to becloud the intellect and benumb the energies. It is not so powerful as tobacco, but is similar in its effects. The arguments brought against tobacco may also be urged against the use of tea and coffee. {TSDF 147.5} According to the above, coffee is similar in its harmful effect as tobacco. Yet, study after study indicates that regular consumption of coffee actually brings health BENEFITS to the drinker. See the following link for the lastest study released on the subject: http://articles.health.msn.com/id/100100599/?GT1=6190 Anyone need a warmup for their cup of cognitive dissonance?

She had no clue that chocolate also contained caffeine, so how was this "enlightenment" overlooked? In fact, many SDA's consume chocolate today, even though they know it contains the chemical. Talk about doing your own thing. Bring on the expresso! |

"Tea and coffee drinking is a sin, an injurious indulgence, which, like other evils, injures the soul. These darling idols create an excitement, a morbid action of the nervous system; and after the immediate influence of the stimulants is gone, it lets down below par just to that degree that its stimulating properties elevated above par." (Counsels on Diet and Foods, 425:3.) |

To my way of thinking those corny statements of EGW's just prove that she was loony and that the term used in reference of her, "Spirit of Prophecy" is just plain blasphomus. Anyone given a "health message" in a future type of prochecy would not have picked on the great God-given stuff to eat and drink, such as tea, coffee, meat, eggs, dairy products, etc. Maybe a warning about Mad Cow Disease or AIDS or different cures for various cancers or diabetis or anything but not a warning against tea, of all things. And, did you know she also said that sugar and milk should never be mixed because it ferments in the stomach and turns into alcohol. I attended a social around 30 years ago at the home of a lady who was SDA. It was potluck. I offered to bring the ice cream. She let me know Sister White said sugar and milk combined should never enter the body because it turns into alcohol and she would no more drink a can of beer than to eat ice cream. I just thought but didn't say it, "Well, then I could bring the beer". Some of those statements by their continuing source of truth are so wacky and bazaar. And, the Bible has several places in it that speeks of the land of milk and honey. Weather they want to admit it or not, honey is sugar. Once again EGW contradicts God. |

EGW also condemned a man for giving eggs to his children. But Jesus says in Luke that eggs are good gifts to give your children. EGW always says the exact opposite of Jesus. It's sick. |

If I remember correctly, EGW blamed eggs for causing children to masturbate. Her psycho-sexual disorder is so obvious to the denomination that all but the "traditional" Adventists conveniently suppress and ignore her wacky pronouncements.

Eggs caused children to masturbate? LOL! Sorry, this is just too much. If eggs were bad then why did Jesus say "My yolk* is easy and my burden is light". *Just a little humor.

I've also heard caffeine is a stimulant, not something that "benumbs". Isn't that why people drink it when they're "tired"?? More proof she had no clue what she was saying. |

My thoughts exactly, Melissa. (Pardon me while I sip my latte.) When I think of how many years I struggled with plaguing guilt over drinking coffee...I'd quit drinking it, then I'd have a morning when I just couldn't get moving, and the "Big C" (as I called it) would always do the trick. I'd pray and pray to be able to just let it go, and, of course, it was always in the back of my mind. "Don't think about the pink elephant," you know. Finally, I told God that I was giving coffee to Him. If He wanted me to give it up, then I was willing, but He would have to take care of my obsessive neart. It was amazing; my guilt disappeared, and I no longer felt as if I were struggling with sin. I did keep drinking coffee, but I could set limits on myself without obsessing. God is so faithful; He has definitely moved me away from some things that I used to love, but coffee hasn't been one of them. I do continue to pray, though, that God will show me what He wants me to surrender and be willing to give those things to Him. Colleen |

My English mother has struggled with Ellen's condemnation of tea for decades now. A few years ago, she gave me a copy of "Counsels on Diet and Foods". The pages that deal with tea/coffee are tattered, highlighted, underlined in red, and there are numerous notes that my mother wrote in the margin. Her mother drinks tea two or three times a day, like any good English lady would. As a result, my poor mother has been burdened with guilt over partaking in this "insidious sin" with her mother over the years. I have witnessed her struggle firsthand, and have seen her vainly attempt to quit many times in her life, only to fail and plunge deeper into despair over her failure to deal with this "sin" in her life. She has made the comment, "well at least in the time of trouble I won't have tea to tempt me anymore." My heart breaks that she is in such bondage, and I am frustrated that the bondage is SO unnecessary! But, alas, Ellen is her prophet so the bondage and struggle will continue until the day my mother breaths her last. I will have a cup of tea over her grave and lift it to the Lord for finally freeing her. I thank God every day that He freed me from this web of bondage! |

Certain teas actually have many health benefits, like Green Tea. It's so silly to think that we would be lost because we chose to drink tea, coffee or a cola. In fact, Mountain Dew has more caffeiene than any of these products. Such petty things to contend with compared to the real issues of the world. |

The FFt highroller weekend is coming up next month. To get the exclusive invite at the nice resort one must contribute at least $1000 per year to FFT. Then they have their annual ordeal at a resort for a weekend. I know several people who look forward to this all year from one shingdig to the next. Anyway, What I'm getting to here is the resorts that these festivities are held at have in room coffee so the loyal servents can have their coffee in the privacy of their rooms. These locations also offer room service so whatever else these loyal SDA's want to induldge in but don't want to be seen can do it in the privacy of their rooms. |

Speaking of Mountain Dew having more caffeine, the one time in my life I ever had it, I went right to sleep like a baby! Of course there were extenuating circumstances. First of all, I grew up without caffeinated beverages and see no reason to get dependent on them now. Several years ago (college days) on a family trip, my husband needed me to drive home since he had an injury. Well after midnight, I just couldn't keep my eyes open. My husband (Ric_B) convinced me that it wouldn't hurt just this one time to have a Mt. Dew--it was NECESSARY. So, we got an extra large at a drive-thru and I drank the whole thing within a few minutes. He said he'd try to drive until the Mt. Dew took effect. I went right to sleep, and he drove the rest of the way home after all! |

Have any of you ever popped No-Doze? That stuff will get me so jittery that I feel like I'm about to explode.I think on the box it says that two tablets is equivelant to six strong cups of coffee. Something horrendous. |

Well, anytime I get a near Migraine headache, I just take two No-Doz and go take a nap. When I wake up, the headache is usually gone! Caffeine just doesn't wire me like most folks. I love coffee and a regular intake of it keeps most headaches away. Ditto for my two daughters who both are prone to migraines. As long as they keep the coffee intake regular they are o.k. |

I've found almost the same thing. Headaches are best treated with a small dose of caffeine which usually help. |

This has reminded me of a story......about five or so years ago, while still an SDA, one Sabbath a member went up front to give a "testimony." Now I don't know about you guys, but I've noticed a testimony in most churches (other than SDA) means someone sharing how they gave their life to the Lord, but in SDA churches it usually means how one came into the "truth" of the Sabbath and the SDA church. However, in this case the SDA member shared how a co-worker was drinking Diet Coke every day and was having headaches. The SDA warned his friend about the dangers of caffeine and drinking Coke. He shared EGW's counsels on caffeinated beverages. Finally the guy stopped drinking the Diet Cokes and his headaches were gone! Everyone was so happy that this guy gave up the caffeine. Another member sitting near me (who is a nurse) and I just looked at each other. We quickly decided it was more likely the artificial sweetener in the Diet Coke that was causing the headaches, as caffeine is actually used to TREAT headache pain in some cases. Just thought it was funny (and still do) that this was a "testimony" shared with the church, and was received with such joy by most of the members. |

That's what my doctor always told me, Carol....Caffeine helps certain types of headaches. I saw it as approval to eat chocolate when my head hurt. Didn't always help the migraine, but it sure tasted good! I still shake my head remembering B's baby shower. They had every one go around and introduce themselves and tell something funny about their history...and I bet 75% told some story about unknowingly eating meat (usually pork) as a child. How weird is that! (or maybe not to those who grew up in that culture...). I wasn't sure if they were trying to relate to me, or make the point that meat is now taboo or that was just the funniest thing they could think of. To a non-vegetarian, it's no big deal to eat a "real" sausage. |
