Weimarred, I'm with you there. I was taught that Adam was about 11 feet tall, and that Eve 9-1/2 or 10. I don't know exactly because it was only read to me and I was in the 3rd grade, I think. Didn't think to write down the reference and save it. I do remember that my teacher said it was one of Ellen's books. Must have been Patriarchs & Prophets, because it had to do with the first books of the Bible. I don't have any of her books anymore--purposely got rid of them, so I can't look up the reference. BTW, I like the question about navels. I used to wonder about that one myself. I even wondered if Jesus had a navel (of course he did ... didn't he?) Belva |

Yes, It is my understanding that the SDA denomination teaches that the early people were really quite tall, 11-12 feet in hight. And as sin got the best of them the hunan race got smaller. By that logic I should be about two inches high. |

And it contradicts what we know about more recent history. For example, if you visit places like the home of Thomas Jefferson, you will discover the doorways are smaller and the beds were shorter...because people were shorter back then. In the last couple of hundred years anyway, height seems to have been increasing, at least in the US. |

My husband made a statement last night that man's longevity decreased significantly after the flood because meat was introduced in the diet. I thought it decreased because of sin. He also said that at the time of the flood there were people who had met Adam. Can this statements be backed up by the bible or are they just ellenisms? Just wondering. |

I don't know if Ellen actually said those things or not--I think she might have said people at the flood were alive who knew Adam. I suspect that that idea came from trying to figure the life spans and generations recorded early in Genesis. I've also heard that life span was shortened after the flood because of the introduction of meat--Again, I don't know whether or not Ellen said that, but it could be surmising based on the fact that Genesis 9 has God giving Adam et all everything that moves for food, and also God says (in a different context but after the flood) he will limit humanity's lifespan to 120 years. Can you imagine, though? If people were still living upwards to 1,000 years, the amount of destruction and evil that could happen would probably multiply exponentially. If people could pursue their plans, collaborate with each other, etc. for hundreds of years, who knows what treachery might happen? Actually, that was the problem of Babel--if God hadn't limited their ability to communicate, nothing would have been impossible to them (see Genesis 11). Today the language/geography issues aren't nearly as limiting as they used to be. But think what the world would be like if Atilla the Hun, the leaders of the Crusades, Stalin, Hitler, etc. were all overlapping in their hundreds-of-years-long lifetimes! What the lifespan limitation also tells me, though, is that given appropriate nutrition, disease control, and environmental safety, etc., humans ought still to be able to live to 120. Improved health/nutrition and environmental/disease controls are probably why the life span has been increasing these past few years. Colleen |

I have been "battling it out" with the Clubadventist folks for about 2 years on that site. This year, they instituted a membership dues deal, and I tried to sign off, but someone from the site paid my dues. So I guess some people there like dealing with me more than they let on! There are definitely some very backwards ideas there, but there are also some hurting, "social SDAs" who are hanging on to the SDA church more because of social status than belief system. SO I pop in there from time to time, and have some people who send me their prayer requests etc. -tanya- |

Chris, you are correct. I just looked it up and confirmed that EGW never used the word dinosaur or dinosaurs. Dennis, that sounds familiar and there may be a quote similar to that but she doesn't explicitly mention dinosaurs. EGW did say though that, "Every species of animals which God had created was preserved in the ark. The confused species which God did not create, which were the result of amalgamation, were destroyed by the flood." (The Spirit of Prophecy, Volume One, page 78, paragraph 2.) This directly contradicts Genesis which says that "every kind" went on the ark. There were no exceptions. Jeremy |

Jeannette, I don't know if Ellen said that people were alive at the time of the Flood who had met Adam, but Methuselah who died right before the Flood was alive when Adam was. She did say, though, that Enoch first received instruction from Noah even though he was taken to heaven before Noah was even born! She also said that the voice of Enoch was heard during the building of the ark! I guess he spoke from heaven or maybe they had a CD of him recorded?! And she said that the Tower of Babel was before the Flood. Jeremy (Message edited by jeremy on March 02, 2005) |

Richard, here they are:
quote:"Enoch first received instruction from Noah, and he observed the law of God, and served him with singleness of heart. He became so pure in character that the Lord communicated his will to him, and through holy vision revealed the great events connected with Christ's second appearing, and also the wickedness that would prevail just prior to the end." (Second Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, 04-29-1875, paragraph 7.) "God determined to purify the world by a flood; but in mercy and love He gave the antediluvians a probation of one hundred and twenty years. During this time, while the ark was in building, the voices of Noah, Enoch, and many others were heard in warning and entreaty. And every blow struck on the ark was a warning message." ((Australasian) Union Conference Record, 09-15-1902, paragraph 8.) "The Lord first established the system of sacrificial offerings with Adam after his fall, which he taught to his descendants. This system was corrupted before the flood by those who separated themselves from the faithful followers of God, and engaged in the building of the tower of Babel. They sacrificed to gods of their own make instead of the God of Heaven." (Spiritual Gifts, Volume 3, page 301, paragraph 4.)

Now that it has been mentioned, that is where I got my information about dinosaurs. I go it from my SDA/EGW upbringing. Some where in my brain is the information that the dinosaurs were not saved because evil men had engineered their development. It is awful to think I believed that at one time. Thank God I took my son out of SDA schools, read to him from the Bible and not EGW. So I did not pass it on. Thank you God for being such an awesome God. Diana |
