Dear Colleen and Richard, Losing a pet is like losing a member of the family. It is tough. But as you saw, God was glorified b/c the vet waived all those fees. God has been holding you and your family is His arms as you have passed through this crisis and He will continue to hold you as long as you need it. He is always there and praise God for that. This is another situation that showed me how awesome God is. Love to you, Richard and your boys, Diana |

Colleen and Richard, Yeah, very sorry to hear about Rocky. I've lost two dogs to cars, so I know the pain you feel. I've found the best medicine is to get another dog ASAP. Maybe for Christmas? As for Del Delker---yep, she's still alive. She's got to be almost eighty though....... |

Colleen, I am so sorry about your dog... he sounds like he was a wonderful friend. I know one of the very worst things I've had to do in my life was to have my 15-plus year old cocker spaniel put to sleep; that was now 4 years ago and I still miss him. grace always, cindy |

Thank you, all of you. It's a bit embarrassing to admit I'm so affected by a "mere" dog--but the fact is, animals are part of the family, right?! I can tell that people have been praying, though, because I really do feel more peaceful and resolved than I did the first couple of days even though there's a Rocky-sized hole in my heart. Thank you so much! Colleen |

Colleen and family, So sorry about your dog. I had a Collie growing up, they are so special. I know how hard it is to lose a pet. That particular dog disappeared once when I was around 10 and I prayed and prayed for her to come back. My mom would sort of let me know that she wasn't coming back but I kept saying she would and kept praying. One night, about 10 months later she showed up at the back door!! Later she was also hit by a car. I feel so bad for you all. |

Colleen, I just read this thread this morning and wanted to tell you how sorry I am for your loss of Rocky. I can relate to the sadness you're experiencing having been through similar losses. I have a very soft heart for animals and can't even watch sad animal movies. Even though they may be 'mere' animals they certainly have a way of grabbing our hearts and maybe it's their trusting, unconditional love that makes losing them so painful. With each pet loss I've experienced in my life, I've been amazed at how Jesus has healed my broken heart. You and your family are in my prayers Colleen - Spokenfor |

Jesus is faithful, Spokenfor--I miss Rocky a lot (walks aren't the same, for one thing!)--but I now KNOW (as opposed to its merely being a theory) that Jesus will never leave me! I'm the same way--I can't watch sad animal movies or read sad animal books, either. Praise God for being faithful! Colleen |

Cindy, Several years ago, I stepped into our garage and found a cute, little cocker spaniel puppy. He had escaped from a neighbor's yard several blocks away. The little puppy is still vividly in my mind--he was so very cute! One of my favorite breed of dogs. Having said all these nice things about this puppy, you would probably expect me to have a dog. Well, I do love dogs and even cats, but not inside our home. I am too fussy. After all, I own a cleaning business. It would be cruel to keep a pet strictly outdoors in Nebraska weather. Sylvia loves animals even more than I, but she kindly continues to put up with our petless life (smile). She lovingly cared for a next-door neighbor's dog for several years because the owner traveled alot in his business. Spike, a Sheltie, could do various tricks and he even performed for a college class. He would posture for prayer and sing, but his devotions were always very brief. Sadly, he died from cancer. We still miss him! Dennis Fischer

Dennis, you are so funny!("he would posture for prayer and sing, but his devotions were always very brief") I can appreciate your feelings, but for me, although I know my home would be a lot cleaner without my two cats (and in the process of finally being able to get another dog!), the trade-off for me is the joy and comfort they bring--just to lie beside me when I read or watch TV, etc.... my animals bring me much joy! "Old Yeller" was a favorite of mine as a child...I was soooo sad when he had to be killed when he got rabies after his heroic fight... grace always, cindy |

I don't own a dog because I'm never home that much and it would be unfair to leave him there alone all day (condo regulations restrict us to only 1 pet). Anyway, I do dog-sit for various people and I really love to spoil them with long walks and treats. I can understand how attached we get to our pets because they never condemn us, always forgive us, and are a lot of fun to be with...unlike certain SDA people I knew. :> |

The sheltie with the "brief devotions" is so funny! Cindy, I'm so glad you're going to be able to get another dog! You said earlier that you worked for an emergency animal hospital--that must have been quite traumatic often--how did you manage that? Your post, PW, reminds me of something someone said to me last Friday. I commented that I was feeling pretty emotional over a mere animal, and this person quickly responded, "Oh, no! Animals are like family--in fact, they're better than some people!" Isn't it strange and wonderful that God made animals, who can't talk and who don't have souls as we do, to be able to have relationships with us? It mystifies me when I ponder it, but it's wonderful! Ok, all this animal talk has given me the medium to throw out what will probably seem like an absurd thought.... in light of what you just said above Colleen, that we are able to have relationships with animals even thought they don't 'talk', makes me wonder about animal communication in the Garden of Eden. Has anyone ever thought it strange that the Bible records the serpent talking to Eve but doesn't describe it as an oddity? I mean, it almost sounds like conversing with the animals was commonplace. I've often wondered if before the fall, animals and humans were able to communicate on another level. Any thoughts on that?? |

Pw, You must be kidding about our pets not condemming is! My cat is the most spoiled animal there is. He has a bad attitude and he is only using us for what he can get out of us. I think he really loathes us. If the neighors offer him better food than we do he moves in with them. Then I have to bribe him to come home and be nice to us. We put up with his bad attitude daily. He opens the kitchen cupboards with his paws and knocks everything over so he can sleep in the cupboards. He hates the litter box so we are slaves to him by letting him in and out of the house at his whim. All this we put up with after I rescued his furry little self abonded and lost in the shopping center parking lot. Come to think of it maybe I should get a dog. Or a fish. |

Speaking of animals talking before the Fall, did you all know that Ellen White says that Adam and Eve conversed with PLANTS before the Fall?! Hehe, I'm serious. She says: "They held converse with leaf and flower and tree, gathering from each the secrets of its life." (Christian Education, page 207, paragraph 1.) Jeremy |

Cats have loooooooong memories. I cared for my son's cat for 5 years, while he finished college, worked until he went in OCS, graduated USAF OCS, married, went over seas and then I moved to Nevada. When in side Fang would jump into my lap and fall asleep and let me rub his tummy. He loved it. I sent Fang, the cat, to Texas by plane before I moved. He did not fuss or need a tranquilizer and I thought he was fine, until I went to see my Grandson when he was 3 weeks old. Fang would have nothing to do with me when I got to Texas. My son tells me it is because he was an indoor/outdoor cat when I had him. At my sons he had to be indoors until my son bought a house. Fang is not a jumper, so he cannot jump on the fence and scramble his way over it. It is fixed so he cannot get out. He was mad at me for making him an indoor cat again. I have not seen him since my son and family moved to a house. I will see how Fang treats me when I next go to Texas. He is a smart cat. When ever my son was overseas, from Texas, Fang would want to sleep in my son's old bedroom. He did that every night my son was gone. When he returned to the US, to Texas, Fang quit sleeping in his room. If the bedroom door was closed he would come to me and meow and I would follow him upstairs and open the door. He did that the 3 times my son was overseas when I lived in VA. Like I said, Fang is a smart cat. Love that cat, but do not want another one. Diana |
