Good bumper sticker. I think I'll look at our local Christian bookstore for that one to buy and put on my car. |

I think the thing that strikes me most as I spend time around and talking with SDAs is the desperation and paranoia that rules their lives. they are so thirsty for the Holy Spirt, but they are drinking the sand and ashes of a dead and decomposing law to slake their thirst. They use their Bibles to try and prove their doctrines instead of reading the Bible to gain truth and understanding. I actually hear people on the CARM website, (maybe Pheeki can correct me if I am understanding them wrong,) say that they do not sin. that they follow every single law, and that if they do occasionally slip up, they always repent immediately to keep Jesus from deserting them. I don't know how to talk to people who say that they don't sin anymore. It is a self-deception that I just don't really know how to tackle, except to say "Perfectly sinless and follow every law at all times, huh? Well good luck with that." |

I had read an sda evangelist a while back who said he had not sinned for 2 years. Some other formers I know said he used to have people in his congreagation who said they had not sinned in a long time. It seems a very shallow understanding of our fallen condition. |

IF WE SAY THAT WE HAVE NO SIN, WE ARE LIARS AND WE MAKE GOD A LIAR. |

I remember sitting in an SDA service and the topic was Daniel 8:14 of course. I can't even remember how the conversation came around to this line, but the pastor asked how many people had prayed for forgiveness that morning and a number of hands went up, then he asked how many were without sin, then, at that moment. only 4 hands went up and he must have asked the question 3-4 times trying to get more people to admit they were without sin "come on, if you're prayed, all your sins are forgiven so you're without sin...". I sat there with my jaw in my hand, not believing the line of thought. His theology was that IF you pray and ask forgiveness, THEN you are without sin. Later, I pointed out the verse in 1 John quoted above and he said oh you know what he was trying to say. If you ask him to this day, 2 years later, if his pastor was teaching contrary to scripture, he'll say no. If you have asked to forgive all your sins, you are without sin and it somehow doesn't contradict 1 John. I still think it's just a lack of understanding the completely lost nature of man that makes everything so simplistic, I guess. It also shows a misunderstanding of our position in Christ, our righteouness that exists in Christ. It reinforces what I've seen through the years, if someone doesn't want to see the truth, even if scripture is starring in their face, they won't see it. It makes me very sensitive that I try to be aware of my own blindspots. |

It's a classic symptom of the legalist mindset... If I have confessed all the past sins I can think of, and I'm not sinning right at this moment, and I haven't made any specific plans for sinning in the future, then I am "without sin". It is a self-oriented righteousness, based solely on works. A person thinking like that has no need for grace. Only "sinners" need grace. But Scripture tells us that even our righteous acts are nothing but filthy rags before God. In other words, we sin even when we do good things because we are utterly sinful to the core. In that mindset, a person is constantly aware of their need for God's constant mercy and blessing. |

I am reading a book on the theology of Martin Luther and the most striking is his development of the doctrine of simoteanouslly being saints and sinners. The SDA do not teach this doctrine. It is very Bibical and very sound and very conforting. |
