HOW YOU BREAK THE SABBATH BY FOLLOWING JESUS If you attend church on Sunday you do not break the Sabbath. But if you go on Saturday, you do! Want proof? Look in your Bible. Exodus 16:29-30 NIV: ^^ Bear in mind that the Lord has given you the Sabbath; that is why on the sixth day he gives you bread [manna] for two days. Everyone is to stay where he is on the seventh day; no one is to go out. So the people rested on the seventh day. ^^ So, according to the Bible and the Bible only you cannot go out of your dwelling place on the Sabbath -- not even to attend church. Furthermore, if you do so, again according to Scripture, you should be stoned as a lawbreaker. Now notice what Jesus did as recorded in Luke 4:16 NIV: ^^ He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. ^^ The reason the Pharisees didn't have him stoned was that they too were breaking this Old Testament Sabbath law by reason of the "traditions of men," in this instance the "Sabbath day's journey," a distance of about a half a mile. But as you know, Jesus attacked these traditions (Matthew 15:6, Mark 7:8 and Mark 7:13) as did Paul (Colossians 2:8 and Galatians 1:14) as being legalistic, worthless trappings of pharisaism. Therefore, it was NOT because of the half-mile Sabbath day's journey tradition that Jesus went to synagogue on Sabbath! Instead it was because of his authority as God on Earth and his status as Lord of the Sabbath that he had the right to break his own law. This is the only true "divine right of kings." There is a profound difference between craven "sinful flesh" legalism and sinless divine authority! It is all the difference between a weak half-god in sinful flesh trying to keep the Sabbath and God-on-Earth (Emanuel) forthrightly fulfilling the Sabbath and breaking it all at the same time! Only God can do that! And so all you Seventh-day Adventists are rightly breaking the Old Testament Sabbath law by following Jesus Christ's example and attending church on the Sabbath. Otherwise, you'd better stay in your homes as Exodus 16:29 commands! Unless, of course, you're doing it for wrong reason, the traditional "Sabbath day's journey" reason of the Pharisees as recorded in the Talmud. But then again, you don't limit your journey to just half a mile, do you? Not under the law, but under Christ, I am, Max of the Cross |
