Speaking of frightening things from our childhood as SDAs, I remember an 11:00am Sabbath service where uniformed police officers stormed into the church, stopped the service, and started collecting Bibles. I was about 7 years old and quite frightened but my 6 year old brother was absolutely terrified. He still talks about that and not with fond memories. We had a church member who was on the police force and the pastor had arranged for him to have a few of his friends stage this drama during the service. Thank the Lord no one died of a heart attack or tried to resist the police with force, etc. Interestingly, everyone quite readily handed over their Bibles...one can only guess whether they would have parted with EGW books so readily.(grin) |

Hi y'all Well, I hate to jump into this reminiscing frightfest (GG) so late but I just discovered the site. Susan: you have the book, "NOW" -- well, I have the record album! (You should SEE the cover) LOL. If anyone wants a tape of it just say so; Along with those more "preachy" sensationalist LP's, this one is truly a fine example of mid-century end-times paranoic kitsch. I also remember the Sabbath afternoon youth meeting spent listening to a dear lady read the entire book to us. Yes, it was scary but FOR ITS TIME, not outlandish from an SDA perspective. IMHO. :-) Bill: regarding handing over the Bibles, well, dont you know every good SDA has about 50 more at home, no big deal. :-) What a great story, I've heard of that being done "back then"...these politically correct (yuk) days I can hardly picture it happening. |

Allenette, I too want a tape, but I'll send the address to you E-mail. I've always heard you should never post your add. over the web. I just hope the E-mail comes through, I've been having trouble with it lately. BTW, is the book still available at local ABCs? Lynn |

I don't personally have any SDA scare stories because I wasn't raised Adventist, but I remember a story a friend once told me. He was raised to be terrified of non-SDA Christians. One day he was picked up hitch-hiking. When the man identified himself as Christian, my friend was so freightened, he would have prefered to be picked up by a plain old, run-of-the-mill heathen. He was sure that if the guy knew he was SDA, he would certainly pull a knife or a gun on him, so he kept his secret to himself. Then, in his own words, an amazing thing happened. This guy from "Babylon" started telling him about the love of Jesus & how much Jesus had done for him. My friend thought this was the strangest thing since the guy wasn't Adventist. Imagine that. |
