I recently read Colossians 2 as a whole for the first time since becoming a former. Let me tell you, I got chills. Within that one chapter I saw: -salvation through Jesus alone -Our transgressions are forgiven, indicating to me that they're gone (i.e. not on the books to be reviewed later) -that people will try to convince you otherwise -the Law was nailed to the cross (with me having prior knowledge that the OT makes no distinction between the "ceremonial law" and "10Cs") -the Sabbath, along with the other festivals, pointed to Christ, who fulfilled those things (indicating no more use for them) -a second warning that people not mislead us through false doctrine, specifically mentioning visions as a tool to mislead us. ...how did I not see this before? |

The Bible reads different following a "veil-ectomy". It's amazing!! Huge chunks of Scripture you've never seen before become visible! |

Rain, that is so awesome! I totally understand...that "veil-ectomy" (thanks, Lori!) makes all the difference. In Christ the veil is removed! Colleen |

Rain; all of us read the Bible through Ellen White glasses and we were programmed to ignore anything that contradicted the Adventist doctrines. That's the way it was with me anyway! That's why I couldn't get it until the Lord rescued me through a series of miracles! (A friend fasted and prayed for me.) |

Rain, an adventist minister at the last sda church I attended challenged the ss class, I attended, to read the NT, with no other help. He did this just before Christmas 2003. I started reading the NT Jan 1, 2004 and the rest is history. Thank you awesome God. Diana |

I read those verses and wasn't sure what to think of them. For years I didn't want to look into them. Now I see what legalism I had to deal with under Adventism. |

Diana, I really love the challenge that pastor gave you..... I have given the same challenge to the local pastor when I had my talk with him, however I am not sure he'll do so. I've been doing the same thing lately, and it has surely changed my life. For a month I read through Galathians, Ephesians, Philippians and Colossians continously... It sure blessed me a lot, and helped me see the salvation more clearly. To quote you: Thank you awesome God! Monica. |

Here is Col 2:18 "Let no one disqualify you, insisting on asceticism and worship of angels, going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by his sensuous mind," The line about worship of angels always comes to my mind when I see the prominent three angel designs at many adventist churches and other institutions. |

Don't forget the asceticism either. Avoiding meat, spices, alcohol (and sex-yes wives The Prophet instructs you to direct your spouse to other things when he suggests that) fits that bill. Not to mention avoiding movies, games, sports, and fashion in the name of "religion". Holiness by self-denial is not the righteousness of faith. I find it amusing that SDAs have such a fear/disdain of "worshipping the idol of a cross" but have no such concerns about replacing the symbol of a cross with the symbol of angels. Interestingly Mormon buildings are devoid of the cross but also prominently display an angel. |

It is something to ponder, that both adventists and mormons received their new religious teachings from an "angel of light"~ I do not think this was a 'coincidence'! ~mj~ |

Ric_b, There's another term for asceticism: Pleasure Anorexic. Think about it. Other maladies that personally sdaism caused in me were Self-righteousness, Being Right, Perfectionism & All-knowing. I was told that I needed to 'fire the committee that lives in your head!' and these were the names of them. . . . Finally I was told that I needed to 'resign from the Godhead.' Yep. . . that was the beginning of my healing. This occurred in a sda based treatment center, which God used for my healing, because I would not have trusted any other 'outside' source. Thank God it was firmly 12-step based. That was 21 years ago - December 9 - January 21. Awesome God! Praise Him! J9 |

Here are a couple of other passages from that chapter which refute Adventism:
quote:"For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily." (Colossians 2:9 KJV.)
Jesus Christ is not just "part" (or one third) of "the Godhead" (archaic for "Deity"--modern translations) as Adventism teaches. Rather, He is "all the fulness of the Godhead (Deity)"! The "Godhead" is not a group of three separate divine beings--the Godhead is a single living Being. (To see more of how Adventism is actually non-Trinitarian (yes, even still today!), you can go to my website here: http://www.cultorchristian.com/)
quote:"If you have died with Christ to the elementary principles of the world, why, as if you were living in the world, do you submit yourself to decrees, such as, 21 “Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!” 22 (which all refer to things destined to perish with use)—in accordance with the commandments and teachings of men? 23 These are matters which have, to be sure, the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against fleshly indulgence." (Colossians 2:20-23 NASB.)
Ellen G. White actually quoted verse 21 as her own slogan to promote her "health message," despite the context saying that it is the false prophets (those who have seen angelic visions--verse 18) that say such things, thus identifying herself as a false prophet for us! Ellen said that abstaining from eating things such as meat, would be of great value against fleshly indulgence (in fact, that was her reason for her dietary rules!), blatantly contradicting verse 23 which says that these things are of no value against fleshly indulgence! Wow, Jeremy! I just looked up the official E.G. White estate and typed "touch not, taste not, handle not" in the search box. That led me to her quote from "The Ministry of Healing," where she says: "In relation to tea, coffee, tobacco, and alcoholic drinks, the only safe course is to touch not, taste not, handle not." (I clicked on "cached" so that the words would be highlighted, so I could find them easy.) She had the King James Bible so she copied the words the same way that the KJV put it: 21Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, 21(Touch not; taste not; handle not; 22Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? Colossians 2:20-22 KJV |
