One more question, this one from our weekly FAF Bible study. What do you think the story of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5:1-11 is about? Why did God strike them dead? Colleen |

As I recall, they lied to the Holy Spirit... |

Also it was a willful deception. Cold and calculated, when all the other believers were treating everything in a communal nature here come Ananias and Sapphira. Not sold out to the Lord, or to the church. But giving just a bit of themselves over to the cause. When you've been bought by the blood it's time to be serious about a committed relationship. |

One thing to remember is that when people are saved, they STAY saved! (1st John 2:12; Eph. 2:8-9; 2nd Tim. 1:9; Titus 3:5) If Ananias and Sapphira had gotten saved, then fell into temptation - doing something that would shame God and the early church; God very well might have called them home. |

My understanding of this scripture in Acts is that GOD was teaching the new church in a BIG way, (so he would not have to do it again) that Hypocrisy Kills! GOD did something similar with the Israelites in the OT after they had conquered the city of Jericho through His power; He told them not to take any treasure but to leave it in the city to honer Him~~Aachen, however, took some things and buried them in his tent~ lied about it & was stoned to death along with his family~GOD wanted the people to know in a BIG Way he would not tolerate Hypocrisy! GOD was doing a 'New' thing both of these times & the people needed to understand! "The fear of GOD, is the beginning of wisdom..."Psalms 111:10 This is what I understand from reading both scripture accounts and putting them together~ ~mj~ |

I've always felt it was because they were trying to set themselves up as the object of worship - God was setting a precident. You can sell all you have and give it to the the church, or part of it, and that's admirable, but don't do it just to have everybody think you're great. I guess along the lines of what Mjcmcook was just saying. |

I like Asurprise's take on it; that they had done something that was not a good example to this incubating new movement, and there was nothing to be done about it but their removal. But the other side of it is that Ananias and Sapphira exhibited lack of trust and faith. Yet, so many times Jesus'disciples had done the same, or worse, but they weren't struck down. Honestly, I have to say it is a problem for Christians to explain what happened here. We can't just blink our eyes to this pretending it isn't there. |
