I thought as much Steve...after writing the Commentary for the SDA Lesson Study on worship and the Sabbath...this brings their Worship of The Sabbath and not the Lord of the Sabbath to a whole new level. | ||

Jeremy; the "Sabbath Edge" alarm would have to be so shrill and startling that it would keep people from thinking regretfully: "Ah, do I HAVE to stop doing/thinking of that activity?! Otherwise they wouldn't go into the Sabbath with the right "Sabbathy" mindset! | ||

BTW; what do people do in the far north? If the sun stops going down for six months or however long it does that - starting on a Sabbath; then what do they do? (The ones who think the Sabbath is a day instead of a Person - Jesus! Colossians 2:16,17) That would be a looooong Sabbath!!! | ||

If the world is round, and the sabbath covers thw whole world, then how do you find the edges of the sabbath? Isn't that a little like trying to find a square hole to fit a round peg in? My uncle was head of the Alaska Mission (1960s I think) & arbitrarily made the decision for them that the Sabbath would be 6PM Fri to 6PM Sat to take care of the 20 hours of daylight or darkness. Seems the 'Sabbath' delight should not have to be endured for more than 12 hours at a time. . . J9 | ||

Stevew; perhaps they could have a voice counting down the hours for them; ie: "there are two hours before the Sabbath," etc. They could use an interesting voice for the app - perhaps the voice of Darth Vader or someone. And then the last five minutes, there could be an audible countdown "25...24...23...22..." etc. And then of course the shrill blast sounding the actual edge of the Sabbath! | ||

I too asked the Sabbath edge keeping question to friends in Alaska and confirmed the 6PM Fri -6PM Sat. Speaking of guarding the edges of the Sabbath...no wait...the middle of the Sabbath, at the time of the GC session in Indianapolis I had just graduated from high school; I was amazed that restaurants surrounding the Hosier Dome offered gift certificates to SDAs so they could come an eat out on Sababth. Later in life I realized how stupid that was as the gift certificates were only a different type of currency…”but we paid for the meal before Sabbath!” I also seriously questioned the types of work that were “allowed” on the Sabbath, like medical personnel for example. I was taught it was wrong to be a policeman because you might have to work on Sabbath, but SDAs would certainly call the cops if they were robbed on the Sabbath. Being a firefighter was a borderline Sabbath job, kinda medical but not, but was granted a pass if you tried to get Sabbath off but were saving lives. I work in the power industry now and I know for a fact that someone must work in the control rooms (on Sabbath) of these power plants to keep a watchful eye. SDA churches operate on the Sabbath and use public utilities and services but would frown on most SDAs if they work with these services. With that said, should there be a “working on the Sabbath meter” app? I think it would be a quite complicated set of algorithms! After my first year of college I had enough of this double standard and joined the Queen’s own Rifles of Canada against my family’s warnings. My family did not come to my infantry graduation but my girlfriend and her family did. Guess the “working on the Sabbath meter” was in the red according to them. | ||

~Well~ it appears that the new "sabbath app" will put the "pacific union recorder" & its "sunset schedule" out of business! In my home growing up in the 40's & 50's this was something we were governed by so as to protect the "edges" of the sabbath! "Woe" to any family member who either threw out or misplaced this guide! I do not know if the "pacific union recorder" is still in existence~ does anyone here have an answer to this question? ~mj~ | ||

One of the worst arguments I've witnessed was at my in-laws' house over "guarding the edges of the sabbath." It was almost sundown, and my brother-in-law put in a secular video for the younger kids to watch, and his wife had a meltdown because he wasn't guarding the edges of the sabbath. | ||

Yes, MJ, and they still have the sunset tables in the back, too. I think that the boarding schools/camp meeting buildings need a special high tech app to automatically lock the showers each Friday @ sundown! LLU dorms won't need it, as it's not a sin there anymore. Hey, Steve, maybe you could buy 'em in bulk for everyone on the forum! I'm sure they'll be collectible some day. J9, that 6 am to 6 pm in Alaska is so interesting, because that's when the early adventists kept Sabbath. (I guess God forgot, during the visions, to mention that the Jews kept it sundown to sundown)...it's pretty interesting that EGW, during this time was a consistent Sabbath-breaker. Say, if in winter the sun set at 5 on Saturday, she kept a whole hour of Satan's substitute day as holy. | ||

My comment above really didn't make any sense. It was 24 hours not 12 hours of sabbath. It seems for example that in places in Alaska Sabbath would be only 3 hours long & then eventually it would be 21 hours long - so we better make it 6pm to 6pm to equalize it rather than having it so unevenly divided. To me that made the commandment 'null & void'. It couldn't really mean that sabbath should be kept literally sundown to sundown as stated. It seemed like 'let's make it more to our own liking & convenience' rather than the way it is stated, sundown to sundown. IIRC my uncle based it on the way the Jews kept the sabbath in parts of the world outside of Palestine. He took a stand & made a decision for AK rather than wait for an 'edict' from the GC. That's how I remember hearing it - - - I always wondered if that decision could be made, why not keep it everywhere from 6pm to 6pm. . . . J9 | ||

This whole topic of when Sabbath supposedly starts and ends has always fascinated me in a strange way. The bible nowhere states to keep it sunset to sunset but rather evening to evening. A study on when evening starts does not clarify the issue as texts can be found supporting either sunset or full dark. I think God deliberately did this because it should have been a time of grace just as the Sabbath properly understood was a shadow of that which was to come; ie Jesus our rest who begins in grace, ends in grace and is grace everywhere between. Like the Jews before them with their legalism, Adventists today with their legalism fail to see that that Sabbath, just like Passover and many other things pointed to a particular aspect of Jesus. All I can say is seriously? That's just too funny! So I guess my son's iPhone...... if he was still an Adventist......when he visits his girlfriend in Australia would be alarming him double time if he left on a Saturday. Of course duh....he would have to wait till our Sabbath is over and then wait another 15 hours till their Sabbath is over so as to not be traveling on the Sabbath. Haha! | ||

Asurprise is cracking me up with the Darth Vader warning and verbal countdown. I DO remember as a kid counting down on Saturdays to when I could turn on the TV! But then again, I was never a really good adventist. I did not enjoy the sabbath as a child. I was bored out of my mind! | ||

I remember times when we virtually had our finger on the 'on' button of the TV whilst the prayer was said to close sabbath. The very second 'amen' was said, the telly was on! Did anyone else notice that there are two sabbath apps in the iTunes store. The one you have to pay for is the one being promoted by my church! ;) | ||

Not me; I would have felt too guilty for that! In fact, I would wait a few extra minutes to make sure that the Sabbath had passed! It came as a total surprise to me to find out that Jesus had brought in a whole new covenant and that He is now the Sabbath! Once I knew without a doubt that the Sabbath DAY wasn't in the new covenant, that the Sabbath is actually a person now - Jesus, I had no trouble at all dropping the day! |
