We just got done watching a DVD that a friend has been insisting we watch. I was blown away and want to encourage any of you that have not seen it, any of you that need some encouragement, any of you that want to make Easter even more meaningful...get this DVD! It is: St. John in Exile, a one-man stage performance by Dean Jones, who gives his testimony in the bonus features. Very, very powerful!!

I found it on Netflix, and we will definitely be purchasing it and sharing it with family and friends.

Please share some DVDs that have powerfully impacted your life for Jesus!

The Star of Bethleham! The most amazing evidence for the sovereignty of God!!

Thanks for the new recommendation!

Totally a side note, but I watched Tangled with my kids yesterday and it was strangely relatable to my journey out of SDAism in some ways. Here is a link to the most relatable moment for me:

Hey Nowisee,

Thanks for the recommendation. I've never heard of this movie, but in checking out the Amazon link, it's got a 5 star review!

http://www.amazon.com/St-John-Exile-Dean-Jones/dp/1563713942/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303317129&sr=8-1

Dean Jones is great. For those who remember, he did all those fun Disney movies back in the 1960's (remember Herbie the Love Bug?). He's one of the rarities in Hollywood with a strong Christian faith.

I'm so excited about this! About 3 years ago I went to Greece with my family and church group. We visited the cave where John lived on the island of Patmos. Such a beautiful little island. Every Sunday, they have a Greek Orthodox worship service in this little cave and it's so neat to experience. I'll definitely recommend this DVD to my gang. :-)

I rented this movie once from Netflix and hubby and I sat down to watch it together. However, hubby, who is a gung-ho SDA, got bored with it and went in the other room before we got even halfway through it. *sigh*

Thanks for the wonderful link...

Kids stuff sometimes is so direct about the heart's real state and journy. - Thanks! :-)

Such a great complement to my Bible study and reading the likes of Calvin, Grudem and Geisler this week. All GREAT food for thought.

Paul, I actually cried during that part! Ok, this is going to sound like a stretch- I know, but the longing the King and Queen had for their one lost child broke my heart. When they sent out the light and it spread through all the people there just under the balcony they spread into what looks almost like the shape of a flying dove. Because the people follow the Kings example they send out their light and it spreads till the lost daughter sees them all and is moved to sing those lyrics and eventually find "home". I was pretty moved by that scene! "... and it's like the fog has lifted..." was a great line! Thanks for sharing the link!!

(It sounds nutty being moved by a Disney movie, it just felt so relatable on so many levels. Like the brainwashing and manipulative fear tactics the "mother" used. I don't know...perhaps it's ok to see God's story in all things?)

Wow, Free2dance! Thank you for sharing this link...Rapunzel is a "former"??

Honestwitness, your husband was BORED by this performance?? Does he have a pulse?!? :-)I wasn't prepared for the impact it had... but I get the "bored SDA" thing. My family didn't seem to "get" the Star of Bethlehem, either.

Honestwitness and Nowisee,

I've noticed too, that a lot of SDA's don't really enjoy anything that isn't SDA driven. They just have no interest in it. I don't know if they are afraid of deception, or are just so spiritually arrogant (or both) that they tune out everyone else.

I've seen The Star of Bethlehem 2 or 3 times. Loved it! Will definitely watch St John in Exile.

Off topic: Thank you to everyone who prayed for my brother in law a few weeks ago. He had a rough time, but seems to be getting stronger and doing better.

Free2dance, I never thought of it before, but I have to agree with you regarding Tangled! I loved that movie - saw it 3 times - and what you say you experienced as a former really makes sense. Especially when Rapunzel leaves the tower and is so conflicted about being free and being worried about leaving the bondage. Wow!

Nowisee, there are a lot of great Christian based tours in Greece. The one we took was called "Steps of Paul". When we went into the cave, we were told to be quiet and just follow the group through. It was so tiny and dark, exept for the candles the priests lit. They sang and chanted so beautifully! I loved it so much that I got back in line and went through again. We also visted Thesaloniki, Corinth, Ephesus (which is in Turkey), Athens and Rhodes. It was awesome!

Carol, I think you hit the nail on the head about SDA's not wanting to enjoy anything not SDA driven. I know that's true for the older generation. My FIL is certainly that way. In fact, when he found out my MIL and her sisters the Passion of Christ, he had a conniption fit. I think it was especially horrid because it was produced by a Catholic.

I've heard Star of Bethlehem is great. I'll have to get that one for Christmas this year!

Ok, last one, I promise. :-)

This scene is a wonderful representation of the manipulation that keeps so many from questioning their SDAism.

With this kind of leadership, it's no wonder so many SDAs can also relate to this kind of a relationship with thier parents too!

(Not all- I know, but many)

Thanks, Free! It would be a wonderful trip!! My parents went to Patmos, also Israel, 10-15 years ago but didn't seem very excited about either one. The 'dead' SDA phenomenon I guess.

Recently watched two other DVDs: "The Bible vs. Joseph Smith" is really very good--a conversation, with interesting Biblical proofs interspersed throughout, between a Christian and a Mormon, filmed in Israel where they both live. (There is a big LDS college there!) The parallels to adventism are all there. It's found on www.Sourceflix.com and is well worth watching. The other is a little film called "Most"--Czech for "bridge". It's very unique and something you could easily share with non-Christians. The bonus feature on the making of it is tremendous and I had to watch it to learn whether or not the makers were Christian...if you have never heard of it, 'Czech" it out!

If any of you haven't seen "More Than Dreams" or any of the "Underground Church" movies from V.O.M., they are wonderful, too.

I'm SO excited that some of you are getting "St. John in Exile"...I'll be so interested to hear your reaction to it!

J9,

"Tangled" is the latest Disney Animated Feature, which came out last November. It's a twist on the story of Rapunzel, who was a princess kidnapped by an old witch. The witch finds out Rapunzel's hair has special healing powers and the ability to make the witch young and beautiful. She hides Rapunzel in a tower all her 18 years of life, leading the girl to believe she's her mother. The witch makes Rapunzel believe that she can't live without her, that the outside world is a horrible place and if she left, bad things would happen to her.

Meanwhile, her parents, the king and queen, never stop searching for her.

When a thief on the run happens upon, and hides in the tower, he finds Rapunzel alone and she asks him to take her out to see the world. He does so, and she feels terribly conflicted about how beautiful the world is, and how badly she feels about defying her "mother". (As I write this, I realize how many parallels there are to the former's experiences!) Through her journey, she discovers what she was missing in life, and who she really is. It's a great movie, very well done with a classic happy ending. Not sure if you are into Disney movies, but here's a link for "Tangled" ~ http://www.amazon.com/Tangled-Mandy-Moore/dp/B004G600A4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303587303&sr=8-1

Of course you can find this DVD everywhere, Target, Walmart, Netflix, etc.

Leigh Anne,
I just figured out how to create a list on google & put an icon in my browser toolbar to add links! Proud of myself I am. So I started a list for DVDs I want to see from this thread!

I know the Rapunzel fairy tale from kindergarten many many many years ago LOL! Just watched the trailer & it looks really funny & good.

Thanks for the link!
