Well, it's happened. Herbert Douglass has published a book explaining that the Great Controversy Theme is the Heartbeat of Adventism. This book is a collection of EGW quotes organized by topics and subheads to show how the GC explains everything from creation to the second coming--and especially salvation and the role of Satan.

Section 1: Introduction: The Great Controversy Theme Is the Grand Central Theme of the Bible

Section 2: The Great Controversy Theme Explains the Background for the Rise of Sin Suffering and Death

Section 3: The Great Controversy Theme Recognizes "the Change in Man's Condition, Through the Coming In of a Knowledge of Evil"

Section 4: The Great Controversy Theme Highlights the Charges that Satan Has Made Against God

Section 5: The Great Controversy Theme Illuminates How God Has Told His Side of the Story!

Section 6: The Great Controversy Theme Explains Why Jesus Became Man, Not ONly To Reveal the Truth About God, But To Identify With Human Beings, Thus Giving Credibility To His Appeal To Us To OVercome, Even as He Did

Section 8: The "GCT" [Great Controversy Theme] Unfolds the Glorious Subject of the Atonement

Section 9: The GCT Explains the Role of the Holy Spirit

Section 10: The GCT Reveals the Role of Jesus as our High Priest

Section 11: The GTY Unfolds What God Intends to Achieve with His Plan for OUr Salvation

Section 12: The GCT Directly Informs All Aspects of the Christian's Life

Section 13: The GCT Has a Beginning and an End, and Its End Is Clearly Predicted, With Its Participants Plainly Identified

Section 14: The GCT Begins in Heaven, When Satan ATtempted By Deceit and Subterfuge to Overthrow the Law of God—and That Hellish Enmity Continues on Earth, with His Final Attack Being Ratcheted Up In the End Times

Section 15: The GCT, in the End Times, Will Develop Into a Perfect Storm, When Satan Will Employ All His Deceptions In Such a Way That Even :The elect" Will Be Challenged (Matt. 24:24).

Section 16: The GC's Last-Day Issues,Forecasting Satan's Final Attempts to Conquer This World,Are Outlined in the Bible.

Section 17: The GCT Describes Two Groups In the Last Days That Define Those Who Honor God and Those Who Represent Satan's Rebellion

Section 18: The GCT Outlines the Final Events That precedeOur Lord's Return

Section 19: The GCT Provides Satan's Playbook for Alert, End-time Loyalists
Section 20: Preaching the GCT Requires Special lKinds of Preachers and Sermons

Section 21: The GCT Ended—All Issues Settled, Universe Forever In Harmony

Index

That's the table of contents...it's true: the Great Controversy Paradigm shapes the way Adventists read and understand the Bible. They'll look right at the words of Scripture and say they mean something different than they say because the GCT is what they believe to be the definition of all reality.

The SDA gospel, Jesus is our example for how to become righteous.

Section 6: The Great Controversy Theme Explains Why Jesus Became Man, Not ONly To Reveal the Truth About God, But To Identify With Human Beings, Thus Giving Credibility To His Appeal To Us To OVercome, Even as He Did

This is another gospel, which is really no gospel at all.

This is wonderful. =D I mean, it's horrible in it's teaching, but wonderful in that it is proving to those looking on that they are anything but evangelical.

In Great Controversy theology, man vindicates God. In the Biblical Gospel, God vindicates man by vindicating Himself in the cross of Jesus Christ (Romans 3:21-26).

I ran into an interesting discussion on a blog by Roger Olson, an evangelical Baptist theologian who was a presenter at an Arminianism conference held at Andrews University not long ago. The discussion can be found at: Seventh-day Adventism and Arminian, evangelical Christianity

I recommend reading the entire blog discussion for context but there is an intriguing post by Victor M. Reyes-Prieto in defense of Adventism. The one that seems pertinent to this thread's topic contains the following:

quote:

Adventists believe are better understood within the context of the Great Controversy theme. Any critic of Adventism that misses the theme of the Great Controversy has no leg to stand on in refuting Adventism unless they consider the basis for Adventist theology. Just like the Reformers’ intimate understanding of Catholicism gave them an edge in refuting such theological system, it would be wise for you and others to honestly look at Adventism with an inquiry mind before even attempting to take down a system that is well interconnected with a solid Scriptural theme.

It will be interesting to see how much more the "Great Controversy" theme is amplified with the publishing of this new book. The blog poster above sure seems to think it is important when it comes to understanding Adventism.

By further study and understanding of the GCT with the guidance of the Holy Spirit it is only possible to find a continuing lack of Biblical support for the Adventist stance.

If you find affirmation for the GCT you are being led by something other than the Holy Spirit.

JMHO.

Wow, thanks for sharing that quote! I absolutely agree with your respons too, Ross.

With all the attention Rob Bell's book is getting for his heretical teaching, I pray that SOMEONE exposes the GC heresy and seriously goes after SDA theology and their association with evangelicals. Pastors of EV churches who support Rob Bells book are loosing their jobs.

I am hoping this causes a ripple in the secular media for this type of story and someone considers exposing SDAs. I hear people say they wont because they are not a big enough "Cult" but the point isn't to teach on the cult, but expose them as seperate from Christianity.

Praying...

Oh boy my Mum responded to my blog post...and I responded back.

The Holy Spirit did a lot better than I would have with a selfish response.

Praying for you and your Mom. God will use you as He used my son with me. My son first told me about what the Bible really says. He showed me something in Ephesians. I was sick at the time and did not absorb it at all. I forgot all about it until I left adventism for good.

Looks like reading the Clear Word would be a waste of time. Why bother when you have all the answers in the GC in a more logical and simpler format. You really don't need anything else. Save time sifting out all that "hard- to-understand 'filler'" in the Bible. Just sit at the feet of Ellen Gautama White and be enlightened.

By the way, have any of you read the Upanishads, Hindu commentaries on the Vedas? They read amazingly like Ellen White.
