Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel. And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal. (Joshua 10:12-15)

With this passage from Joshua in mind, and the fact that calendars are man made, "What day is it?" I'm not talking about the day of the battle I'm referring to "today".

Can you see how this passage begs this question? Calendars were made by man to keep track of time passage each month and year. God stopped time for a whole day; when did we get that day back? How can anyone really know what day it is, with this passage in mind. How could anyone know whether Saturday is the Sabbath or Friday or Sunday or Monday. You see, if God truly stopped time for this battle to take place, then the calendars have been off ever since. Because there's not been a day like it since, therefore we never regained that day.

Any thoughts on this?

There are so many problems with "what day is the REAL Sabbath" when we start looking at calendars...

Israel observed a lunar calendar, not a solar calendar as we do. The months were different, and they were based on the new moon. Hence, Sabbath moved around, because Sabbath was always figured on the basis of the new moon being the first of the month. The "real" Sabbath was every seventh day according to the lunar calendar, so "Saturday" is actually not the true Sabbath...the Adventists' rigidity about the seventh day is actually meaningless in the historic perspective.

Of course, Adventists will argue that given modern calendars, what matters is that they're faithful to whatever the seventh day happens to be according to our time-keeping. Yet the arguments they use about the seventh day being Saturday, that Sunday is the "venerable day of the sun", that the actual seventh day is the real Sabbath...these all lose their validity when we look at Israel's Sabbaths.

This is just one more evidence that created things are not intrinsically holy. In the new covenant, it is believers who are holy because God Himself indwells them. All other things are merely "things". There is no holy time or place...Jesus made this point to the Samaritan woman in John 4:24-26.

A former sda from Australia explained the lunar calendar on CARM. I found it very interesting as I had never heard or read of it. So the Sabbath moved around with the moon being the first of the month. Love that. The sdas there do not believe him, but what else is new.

***Of course, Adventists will argue that given modern calendars, what matters is that they're faithful to whatever the seventh day happens to be according to our time-keeping.***

That is the key to the whole thing. With this passage from Joshua 10 we can see that God stopped the universe long enough for this battle to be fought. This passage defies gravity, time, and the other laws of physics that apply. You can't dismiss it as a metaphor or an allegory, because it is about Joshua trusting God and God granting or answering his prayer. It had never been done before and hasn't been done since. And it's going to have an impact on "time" after the fact. Since it hasn't been "made up" this day lasted anywhere from 18-36 hours. That's daylight hours not darkness included because we can see from the text that the sun stood still in the sky and so did the moon. An 18-36 hour day throws off every calendar that existed before it took place. If they didn't make an adjustment for it, then the calendar has been off ever since. See what I mean?

So if the SDA church is "going by" our time keeping, they are not keeping the Sabbath. They are keeping a man-made day. You can start from any day of the week and the seventh day will fall on a different day. For example if you start from Monday, with Monday being the first day of the week, that puts Sunday as the seventh day. If you start from Tuesday, Monday is the seventh day, and on and on. Man decided what order the days of the week fell on.

God essentially pushed <pause> on his cosmic TiVo.

I was watching a basketball game on TV last weekend and kept having to pause it to attend to chores. When I sat back down, sometimes I hit <rewind> on my TiVo, and during the commercials I hit <fastforward>. Once I had it set on <pause> for nearly a half an hour. When I returned, I thought to myself, "this must be sort of what it is like to be God, completely outside of time, yet able to jump in and participate in any time period I want, for however long - or short - I want, and then step out of time again to attend to other matters.

The players and crowd in the arena didn't know I was doing this with "their time", and I was able to participate as if the game was going on at that moment when, in fact, the outcome had already been determined an hour earlier.

I also thought, "that must be sort of what it is like to be God and not get all wound up in the goings-on in an everyday fallen world." He already knows the outcome and the final score.

My rambling thoughts for the day...

Ramble on, Freeatlast. Those thoughts are always provocative. Good example.

I love that analogy Freeatlast! It would be like Him watching a movie He loves, that He had seen already, where He knows how it's going to end, but gets into it anyway! :-)

Freeatlast,
THAT is a very interesting perspective on how God must perceive time. Brilliant! Especially for a mentally challenged, linear time being such as myself
Colleen,
I have heard/read about how Israel kept a Lunar calendar and that, based on this paradigm, Sabbath would actually fall on various days of each week and change throughout the years.

http://lunarsabbath.webstarts.com/uploads/New_Moon_and_Sabbath_for_2011.pdf
So the next Sabbath is this SUNDAY, April 3rd, 2011.
I have asked a couple of Adventists about this and they had no answer. But the puzzled look in their eyes was interesting! HA!

A friend from Australia, a former sda, brought the lunar calendar up on CARM. Ohhhh, you should read all the sdas comments. They just do not want to believe it. He is on Facebook also. Can't remember his name right now.
