I'm not surprised,

I think there was a drum roll just before the "cherished bean" was created.

I see I would be justified in calling the area of the kitchen as our 'health food counter' wherre I have the coffee roaster, the grinder and the brewing pot lined up with the bread maker and the rice steamer.

Now I know I am going to have to wait for warmer weather to come up there Phil. I had to quit drinking coffee bout four years ago because I, shall we say, consumed it in an over abundance.

The smell of fresh roasted coffee cooking just drives me crazy wanting a cup, so when you make coffee I'll have to flee out of the house and live with Hooch until the crisis has past.

I used to go to a coffee stand and get two double shots of Americana before I went diving in the sound up there, because that jolt really does give you more energy in short bursts and it takes a lot of energy to dive in those cold waters of the Puget Sound, not so in southern California and Florida, in Florida it's like diving in luke warm water.

One night in Florida I got some Methyl Ethel Keytone peroxide in my hair just before I went off shift, I stopped my car by the cause way and dived in the ocean cloths and all, I wonder what passers by thought when they saw a man come to screeching halt, throw open the door and dive over the side, cloths and all at 1:00 o'clock in the morning. Ya might say I was hot headed, :-)

But I gar-on-tee you if you dive in the Sound at one in the morning, you'll dive right back out, then you gonna need a cup of Joe and a warm blanket.

Standing Offer,

I think River may of missed the meaning and application of the word 'temperance'.

Anyone who shows up at our home gets to have a loaf of my world famous bread even if you pass on the coffee, River included. It is made from grain ground in my own mill and includes only the best ingredients. Give me advance warning and there will be English muffins.

PS
Right now I don't think I would want to go wading in our pond even if that cold north wind seems to have abated. Hooch prefers the indoors so don't expect him to show you around the great outdoors until spring comes. His special place is on a mat in front of the pellet stove.

I love coffee...I did have to give it up while Iowrkedin an office...I got to hte ont where I was drinking around 8 cups a day...I wasn't sleeping well...so i quit.

I started again about a year ago,and its been fine. I do need one cup a day or i get a headache, but I typically only have one or 2 cups a day. I drink it because I like it, not to stay awake, like I use to.

Phil, now i want to visit...that bread sound just wonderful, and I'll have coffee as well, please and thank you!

I like coffee with hot chocolate mix in it! Especially the dark chocolate mix! :-)

Here's some articles from Reader's Digest:

http://www.rd.com/living-healthy/coffee-hot-stuff-for-your-health/article36464.html

And here's one that mentions four food that help prevent diabetes (including coffee and cinnamon):

Oops, I clicked on that last one to check and it came to Reader's Digest but not to the article. If you type in "benefits of coffee" (after you click on the link) in the search box, all these articles come up. The article called "4 Super Foods for Preventing Diabetes" is towards the bottom of the page.

I love it! You know, I keep thinking that God totally knew what we humans would need...(what a surprise!)...and gave us coffee, tea, etc. because He knew it would benefit us.

When I think of the prohibitions on coffee we all lived with, I just have to think about 1 Timothy 4:1-4 where Paul specifically says in later times false teachers will come who will teach doctrines of demons, forbidding marriage and the eating of foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving and enjoyed.

As Richard said recently, "Ellen said everything good was bad, and everything bad was good..."

Diana,

I know about your gluten intolerance. For you I will whip up some southern style corn bread with corn flour fresh from the mill and baked in a pre-heated cast iron skillet. Corn bread, chili and fresh roasted coffee now that is a meal to die and go to heaven for.

PS
One of the secrets for good corn bread is to use alum free baking powder. Better tasting and better for you.

Mmmmmm, the hot chocolate mix sure sounds yummy to me right now.

Interesting... maybe I'll have to find a way to develop a taste for coffee. I've only barely had one sip before and think it smells bad and tastes bad.

My SDA grandfather (converted to SDA as an adult) never did give up his coffee and probably had entirely too much of it. (He was very senile too, so I don't think it did much for preventing dementia!) The bad part is I remember in our family prayers as a young child when it was my turn praying every single day that my aunt would quit smoking and my grandpa would quit drinking coffee "so they could go to heaven." How sad is that? My aunt was an agnostic with no use for any religion, but I never once thought of praying for her to know Jesus. And no one ever bothered to correct my understanding on that.

Raven, I resonate with your memories of your past concerns with your grandparents' coffee and smoking. Yes--it never occurred to me to be concerned about people knowing Jesus, either.

And speaking of coffee--one of the things I love at Christmas time is coffee with chocolate and eggnog...yum!

Have you ever noticed in a restaurant they always come around with the coffee pot more than once but if you drink tea you will be lucky to get a second cup of hot water?
I have a one cup coffee maker so that is all I drink unless I am at a resturant with coffee drinkers. I generally drink water.
Colleen, I have never tried it with eggnot added to the chocolate. Something new to try.

Dementia and coffee? Hmmmmm!

My step father in law is 95 and a very staunch SDA. To the point of leaving his estate to the church institution rather than his relatives. The point is that he has never drank coffee and he started dementia a few months ago, and now is totally gone mentally.

On the other hand my grandfather drank four or five cup of coffee before seven in the morning, and then some more during the day. He died at 95 very lucid.

Coincidence? I don't know. Maybe, maybe not. Just interesting.

Having coffee right now, my favorite time of the day! My mother is going downhill in her senility, and it makes me sad that she could have been enjoying coffee all these years and maybe it would have helped to delay it! She had three older sisters, two were staunch sda's, and one was not at all. Guess who lived the longest and had her right mind when she died?!! Yes, the non-sda. The other two were out of it for a while. I think they just needed to escape the horrors of being an sda! :-)

I have also been reading about how bad processed soy and even soy milk is for you!! I buy my mother just organic whole milk, and she doesn't seem to ask for the soy any more, and even seems to be asking for milk all the time! Must be it tastes better.

River, I do know some people who can't have caffeine at all, but normally they say to have only about 2 or 3 cups a day. I notice that I can even have it at night and can sleep like a baby, so I must have built up a tolerance to it. Can you even have it in small quantities?

River, I like you would drink an over abundance of coffee so I went to Herbal Tea but I have gotten tired of it so I have switched back to coffee and how I have overcome the over abundance problem is I bought a one-cup coffee maker and that is all I will make where before any coffee left over I would drink it instead of wasting it by throwing it down the drain.

Like many of you, both Sharon and I love our coffee, but we limit it to one cup. So most mornings I make us each a latte with the espresso machine, and we use some premium beans from Peet's Coffee. Even the type of grinder you use makes a difference, with the conical burr grinder being best. Anyone who comes over can have a cup, it doesn't take long. Bad coffee is a preventable tragedy.

My neighbor suggested getting a coffee press. Her husband has one and she bought one for her son for xmas as he was complaining of his stomach getting upset after drinking it. She said the press alleviates this. Also if the power goes out you do not have to forgo your coffee as the press does not use electricity, just hot water. I am giving some thought about getting a small one.
