Jesus said during the Sermon on the Mount..

If you even look at a woman and lust after her you have committed adultery with her in your heart

If you hate your brother without cause or even call him a fool you are guilty and a murderer at heart

Jesus was revealing the problem of sin and were it begins, within us.

With that said would it be fair to say, If you even think about work or any activity other than complete rest (cessation) on the 7th day you would be a Sabbath breaker at heart?

Just some bread for thought.... ;)

Good questions Paul,

I commented to my SDA friend how easy it is now to break the 10C with what Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount. I pointed out that if you answer the phone with a prospective client, while on the job working for another client, you've stolen time and money from that employer/client.

With the law being revealed as being spiritual that would make sense that if you couldn't help but think about what you needed to do tomorrow (Sunday, the first day of work) then you'd be breaking the sabbath. You are planning how you are going to go about completing this job, whatever it is.

Paul, I agree. My belief is that the recognition of sin is a matter of the heart/soul and conviction is found in this, God sees and knows our heart :-), and the Holy Spirit is active and alive in our hearts. The 10 commandments pointed out sin-right vs. wrong- but didn't address the 'spiritual' part of sin, which is 'spiritual death' eventually. I know as a former sabbath-keeper I was quite guilty of 'impure' sabbath thoughts :-(

Ok, the following is by no means the last word on this, but here's how I see it. Since we haven't been under that covenant, it was never lawful for a Gentile to keep that Sabbath. Because we have never been under that law, we can't be condemned for breaking a law which did not put us under its jurisdiction. It follows that it was never unlawful for us to think secular thoughts on the 7th day. We were excluded from that law or its blessings, and we were without God or hope in the world(Eph. 2:11-12). And now since the shadows have met the Reality, 4th commandment observance is not genuine Sabbath-keeping for either Jews or Gentiles.

The spiritual Sabbath is stated by Jesus in Mt. 11, that we come to Him with our burdens, especially the burden of pleasing God, and enter His rest from our works. Those burdens press upon us every day, every hour. Now, He has appointed a certain day called Today (Heb. 4), the space and time in which we hear His voice calling us to rest in Him. Worrying about how we can be good enough, refusing to give our anxieties about our goodness and productivity to Him, that is denying the sufficiency of our new Sabbath. In the spiritual realm, we find our rest in trusting a Person, not in a newer, better set of rules.

It was always strange to me why Jesus always skip the first 4 comm of 10C, then I get it : because the ralationship to God, is now sum up with faith in His beloved Son. (rest 6 c is about loving your fellow men)and that last 6 C Jesus is pointing in the heart of the matter. First 4 C are without meaning, but yes we all breaking them also.
Do you wonder why Jesus acept peoples to kneeleing before Him that is contrary to second comm. ?

Man Jesus is God so first 4 are abolished.

It also help to compare the two covenants in this way.

The old covenant which was a ministry of death, it gave no one life, it was hard, cold stone, it certainly gave no rest to the soul because one had to continually keep it without faulting in one point, they had to work to enter rest. All it could do was continually point out our condition, our sin, it had no power to change us, it was only rock. It only increased our sins, although it was not sin itself.

The New Covenant, Jesus has life in Him, and this life is given to all who believe in Him. He is gentle, and His yoke is light, He gives rest to our souls because we are no longer required to keep the law in order to obtain life, it is given freely. We no longer have to work to enter rest, we believe and enter that rest. Jesus is the true Rock, whom does not condemn but gives mercy and grace.

Ezekiel 11:19-20 makes this distinction between these two covenants. "And I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh in their flesh, that they may walk in My statutes and keep my ordinances and do them. Then they will be My people, and I shall be their God.

God will take out the heart of stone (old covenant - 10 commandments) out of the flesh and give a heart of flesh (Jesus) in our flesh. This is a comparison of God's law as the old had glory but the new has greater glory. Jesus truly does Magnify God's Law, and by accepting His free Grace, we stand in God's Law (Rom 3:31) because He is able to make us stand (Rom 14:4-8).

Gorancroatia,

The first 4 Commandments are summed up in Jesus

1 John 5:20-21 Notice how John states that Jesus gives us knowledge of the True God so guard yourselves from idols.

1 John 3:23 John states specifically what Commandments Christians keep, That we believe the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another. Jesus is our example of Love for God and Love for others. The 10 Commandments were but they have faded as Jesus' glory is the exact image of the Father. And thos who see Jesus see the Father and Know the Father.

Goran, good point about Jesus accepting people kneeling before Him and accepting worship. He is God the Son. I hadn't thought about that particular fact of His accepting worship before. His accepting worship even as incarnate God on earth would have been a clear statement that He was God to anyone who was seriously looking at His life and witness.

Sorry Paul, my English...

Colleen, when think back, that was my first AHA in adventism, All the way trough Gospels there is a breaking of 2. Commandment and no less by Jesus Himself (if we look at Him like Jews did - like at man). So, that was a issue for Jews, no doubt.
