We just got done watching a teaching DVD set in the holy land. A group of people were taken to what the teacher/historian explained is one of the oldest known ruins of a synagogue that was in use during the time Jesus was on earth. The Moses seat and torah closet are still visible. The teacher explained that the reading of the scrolls of the Law and the Prophets were read on a schedule, so that they would be read through on a regular basis. Then to Luke 4, where there is a description of Jesus beginning His ministry, teaching in the synagogues. In Nazareth, He stood up to read in the synagogue "and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him." And we know what He read, the beautiful passage from Isaiah 61: 1 & 2. "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." "And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them,'Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.' What I had never heard taught before (and is so absolutely awesome), was the teacher saying that the scheduled reading in the Nazareth synagogue, on the exact day Jesus came there and stood up to read, just "happened" to be the scroll of Isaiah. If this idea of scheduled readings in the synagogues isn't true, let me know. But, God is so much more intricate in His plans than I ever knew, that I hope the scheduled reading concept is a fact. |

Nowisee, this is awesome!! I have no "proof" of it, but I'm sure it's true. The idea of seasonal liturgical readings in Christianity is ancient, and many ancient practices are derived from things older. It makes sense--in the same way the Star of Bethlehem makes sense! God planned these things in advance. Colleen |

Scheduled readings are true and the early Christians carried that idea over to the early church. Today, the custom continues with most liturgical Christians following a 3 year schedule of readings which covers the Bible. |

NowIsee, Great post, you got me to thinking outside my little box, and yes I do believe the day, the hour, the scripture and who read it, was right on schedule, I have always believe that from the first time I read it. Thanks for getting me outside my own little box I tend to get boxed up in. You have just inspired me to finish a story I started quite a while ago, and had forgotten about. Isa 14:24 The L ORD of hosts has sworn saying, "Surely, just as I have intended so it has happened, and just as I have planned so it wil stand..." The other day, I was seeking the Lord for some reassurance that He really is in control, because of some absolutely horrendous things that have been happening in my family. I came across this verse in the NASB and felt it was a little message just meant for me, when I needed it most. Of course, if you read the context, you know it wasn't originally meant for little old Honestwitness in the 21st century. However, the concept can certainly be applied to any situation, can't it? I think it also applies to everything Jesus did. |

Thank you!!! That applies to me today. I am where God wants me. I may not like it, but I can accept it because I know He loves me and promised to care for me. He is so awesome that way. Diana L |
