Hello everybody I found a sermon of John Piper about sanctification and killing sin by the Spirit which I think will not be a waste of time if you'll have patience to watch or listen to it. I think it's relevant to the way we learned in adventism how to fight with sin and you will find somewhere in the sermon why it never worked for us and will never work in the adventist setting. Also due to the focus on sanctification and holy living the sermon may be a useful tool in dealing with our adventist friends who are usually suspicious of what an ex-adventist (read "apostate") may suggest as a reliable source of understanding the word of God. While not dealing with the adventist view explicitly, a conscious adventist will at least come with some questions after watching this sermon. Beside this, the relationship between sanctification and full assurance of salvation is explained in a clear way so that nobody will be misled to think that his salvation is put in jeopardy by his ability to pursue sanctification. As you know, that's quite relevant for the adventist way of thinking that has the basic message of the gospel and holy living upside down. With the hope that you'll be blessed by this sermon, here is the link http://www.marshillchurch.org/media/special/be-killing-sin-or-sin-will-be-killing-you Soli Deo Gloria Gabriel |

Gabriel, This was EXTREMELY helpful to me. I listened to it last night. For some reason it struck me that all sin is rooted in not trusting God and His promises. Piper seemed to indicate that the best resource we have when "tempted" is God's promises ... He is faithful .. I was also amazed by the teaching in Romans. I really liked the way he rooted and connected justification and sanctification in Christ's death and resurrection. Thanks for sharing this link ... it really helped my indoctrinated brain waves . Thanks Jackob for the link. This sermon really reminds us, we can flourish under "mere forgiveness," or we can perish seeking mere "help." By God's grace, someday I'll be spirtually mature like the man in this story, Jack. The Poor Huckster There was once a poor man, a huckster, who used to go round the country villages selling little goods. This poor creature, in going round on his journeys heard some old woman singing a little ditty: "I'm a poor sinner and nothing at all, But Jesus Christ is my all in all." Jack recalled that. "Ah!" Said he,"That just suits me." So he began to hum it himself as he went round on his huckstering expeditions and, by God's good grace, that little ditty burnt its way into poor Jack's heart. After some time he became a converted man, gave up his swearing and drinking, and began regularly to attend the church services. At last he determined that he would join the church; so he went to the minister. The minister said. "Well, friend, what can you say for yourself?" "I'm a poor sinner and nothing at all, But Jesus Christ is my all in all." "Well," said the minister, "you must tell me more than that." "No," said Jack, "I can't, for that is my confession of faith, and that is all I know." "Well, friend," said the minister, "I can't refuse you church fellowship, but you will have to come before the church meeting, and the members will have to see you and judge you." Jack accordingly went to the church meeting, and there sat some good old-fashioned deacons - some of whom began to see whether they could find fault with him. He stood up, and on being requested to state his experience, simply said: "I'm a poor sinner, and nothing at all, But Jesus Christ is my all in all." Some one old deacon said, "Is that all you have to say?" "Yes," says Jack, "that's all." The minister said, "You may ask my friend here some questions if you like." So one says, "Brother Jack, have you not many doubts and fears?" "No," said Jack, "I never can doubt but that 'I'm a poor sinner and nothing at all,' for I know I am; and I cannot doubt that 'Jesus is my all in all' for He says He is, and how can I doubt that?" "Well," said another, "but sometimes I lose my evidences and my graces, and then I get very sad." "Oh," said Jack, "I never lose anything, for in the first place 'I'm a poor sinner, and nothing at all' - and no one can rob me if I am nothing at all - and in the second place, 'Jesus Christ is my all in all,' - and who can rob Him? He is in heaven; I never get richer or poorer, for I am always nothing, but I always have everything." Then another began to question him thus: "But my dear friend Jack, don't you sometimes doubt whether you are a child of God?" "Well," said he, "I don't quite understand you; but I can tell you I never doubt but that 'I'm a poor sinner and nothing at all,' and that 'Jesus Christ is my all in all.'" Always after that in the villages they used to call him "Happy Jack," for he was always happy; and the reason was that you could not drive him from that simple standing point, "There is nothing in me: I believe in Christ; I deserve punishment; I am lost in myself, but I trust in Him who came into the world to save sinners, and I know He will not let me perish." "My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, But wholly lean on Jesus' Name: On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand." I apologize, the above post doesn't really fit into the flow of this discussion thread. Yesterday, I was trying to work with Richard to change it to a new thread, and my computer crashed. Well, maybe there is another purpose in this. Martin C |

I liked the story Martin, I haven't had a chance to listen to the sermon by Piper yet, probably still won't have the chance today. But I sort of identify with Jack the Huckster, when I came to the point where I realized that I had nothing to offer, yet Jesus offered everything, that was my turning point. When you no longer have the 'protection' of seeking for something to offer, that is when you get everything. Make sense? Looking for something to have to offer is an act of self protection from God. "When you no longer have the 'protection' of seeking for something to offer, that is when you get everything." River ---That about says it. Since many of you won't get to listen to Piper's great sermon, I listened and took some brief notes. They are not thorough, I was at work, but they give you the flavor. NOTES ON PIPER, ROMANS 8:13 "13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live." Five questions prompted by this text: 1. What do Die and Live refer to? They refer to eternal life and eternal death. Rom. 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." 2. Does this mean you can lose your salvation? The Golden Chain of of salvation: Rom. 8:29,30 "29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified." The Golden Chain cannot be broken, "those" at the start of the chain are the precise number of "those whom" at the end. There are no dropouts, salvation is not something that comes and goes, you cannot have part of eternal life. So what does Paul mean by, "if you live according to flesh you will die?" What is says. You will go to hell. But those who are justified will confirm it by their putting to death the deeds of the body, through the Spirit. Believers are in a state of war against sin. So, no, you cannot lose your salvation, if you belong to Christ. Your life will confirm it. 3. What are the deeds of the body? Romans 6:13 "Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life..." It is any deed we do which is under the reign of sin. Sin is like an evil king. Don't let him reign. Rom. 6:5 Everything that happened to Christ, everything he did, is ours, too. We are crucified and have new life. As to sin, we are "walking dead." So make this true in a practical way. He breaks the power of cancelled sin. In fact, the only sin in which you can make ANY progress, is forgiven sin! (Piper is pretty excited here) If you try to make your behavior of war on sin the basis of that forgiveness, there will be total defeat. Only sins cancelled on the cross can be killed. These sins don't have dominion over you, kill them now! 4. What does "putting to death the deeds of the body" refer to? Jesus said that it is not what goes into a man that defiles him, but what comes out of the heart, such as murder and lust, etc. This is the root of sin. Our behaviors are just the fruit. Go at the root. Romans 8:7 "For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot." The flesh is not skin. It is the part of us that is hostile to God, just doesn't like His authority, holiness, authority. We don't want to submit to Him, we want to make other things our treasure. 5. How do you do it by the Spirit? "...those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit." Things of the Spirit are: The Gospel, the Word of God, the whole counsel of God. The sword of the Spirit. Gal. 3:5 "Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith?" Killing sin is a miracle that cannot be accomplished by law-keeping, but by "hearing," embracing the Gospel. Then the Spirit moves and kills sin. At the center of the Word is, the Cross where my sins were paid for, the Resurrection to confirm the sufficiency of the death, and good news that His death secured every blessing for me. Everything is ours through Him, and THAT is what you set your mind on in temptation. It is the hearing of faith, of the promises of God in the Gospel. All the promises of God are YES in Christ. Everything promised to Israel is ours, bought by Christ. Direct your mind to the boold-bought promises and what He did. There are specific promises for specific temptations: No need to cheat on taxes. Phil. 4:19 "And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus." Example: The problem of anger in the parable of The Unforgiving Servant. Anything done to us is small compared to what God has forgiven us for, and Christ paid with his blood. It's $10 compared to $10,000,000. That can help calm us down in traffic. We're forgiven, and a million times greater than anything anyone does to us. Set your mind on the things of the Spirit, His promises work miracles in killing sin. Sorry this was so long, and I hope it will help. Martin C |

I just downloaded it for itunes from that site (the audio only link). Really - it's so simple and we complicate it so many ways. This man is blessed with a great ability to lay it all out the narrow it down. Thanks so much! Sondra |
