If Doc or anyone else who knows is available.. I think I have even asked this before, but I've slept since then.. Just wondering what the verb indicates in this verse for "confesses". I know many false movements who have a doctrinal statement that says Jesus is God in the flesh - but they never talk about it or focus on it. They lift up something else as the main focus of their ministry, which glorifies them as special, and not God. So to me this verse means.. Any spirit that does not confess (as it's primary message - an ongoing confession) that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh, is antichrist. Didn't know if the original language supported my interpretation or not. =) What people speak of first, and most, is their god. 1Jn 4:2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that CONFESSES that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 1Jn 4:3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. And then, if there is evidence a group has actually removed this message in anyway - such as the song manglings in the other thread, that should be more than obvious - what spirit has inspired it. Anyway.. just curious Sondra |

Don't know if this will help or not but here is a quick lookup in a couple of bible dictionaries and a comparison of different translations: From New American Standard Concordance: G3670 homologeo; from homologos (of one mind); to speak the same, to agree: - acknowledge (2), admit (1), assured (1), confess (6), confessed (4), confesses (6), confessing (1), declare (1), give thanks (1), made (1), profess (1), promised (1). Hi Sondra, You have the meaning of the word from the above post. The Greek verb in both cases is in the present tense - homologei. This is a continuous tense in Greek, so it means something like, keeps on confessing, or in the second verse, does not continually confess. This would certainly indicate it has to be a central theme, and not just some side issue. God bless, Adrian |
