Daily, I receive a devotional called "Worthy Ministries" which is posted from Israel. Sunday night starts the Day of Atonement and I found today's email very interesting:
quote:Phillip, who's your scapegoat? Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. The Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur in Hebrew, will begin on Sunday night throughout the world. This was the single most important day during the time of Yeshua (Jesus) and still holds utmost significance in Israel and among Jews worldwide today. I mentioned that every year the high priest would sacrifice a goat and sprinkle its blood on the altar for the atonement of the people. But there were actually two goats sacrificed on this day. One’s blood was sprinkled on the altar but the other was led to a cliff in the wilderness, where it would meet its end. This goat was called the "scapegoat" – it represented the “carrying away” of the iniquities of the children of Israel. It is in connection with this ceremony, that an interesting tradition arose which is mentioned in the Mishna, an ancient Jewish commentary. A crimson colored sash would be placed on the door of the Temple before that second goat was sent into the wilderness. When the goat died, somehow the sash would mysteriously turn to white. And this was a sign to Israel that God had accepted their sacrifice and their sins were forgiven. The Mishna goes on to say, however, that something mysteriously happened in 30 AD, approximately forty years before the destruction of the Second Temple. Despite the continued goat sacrifices each year, the sash never turned to white again. Hmmmmmmmmmmm. What other very significant thing happened about this very time? Yeshua (Jesus) died. Phillip, two thousand years ago, the final sacrifice was made for the atonement of our sins and for the sins of all who would believe. Yes! Yeshua (Jesus) is the Messiah! He has died and risen again! He rules at the right hand of our Father and He is interceding for us right now! Let’s pray for the world’s eyes to be opened today! There’s so much work to be done!
Considering what Adventist teach concerning the Scapegoat, I thought you all might find this interesting. Fearless Phil |

I've heard this before and always wondered if it was legend. Pretty coincidental legend don't you think? And not very complimentary to the picture of their standing with God. I wonder if they knew it validated Jesus Christ of Nazareth as the scapegoat and Messiah... if they would have even written it down? Sondra |

So interesting, Phil! It's clear that no Jew would ever connect "scapegoat" with "satan". Even to the Jews the scapegoat represented the Messiah--although they generally failed to recognize Jesus. The Adventist doctrine is not only twisted, it's the place where the darkness and deception of Adventism tips its metaphorical hand and reveals its true origin. Colleen |

John the Baptist did say it best. I was wondering if their is scripture that indicates that the scapegoat was taken to a cliff to meet its end, or if this was a tradition of man. I know that God said he hates their feast days,(Amos 5:21) Chris |

Christo, I don't think scripture ever states such a thing, I believe it is tradition added on. But to go along with the scripture that John the Baptist said Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world there is another one when Jesus went to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read scripture (Luke 4) He read about the Jubilee Sabbath and then stated that this scripture was fulfilled today, after speaking they became angry with him and took him outside the city to a cliff to throw him off. Interesting how the Jews were doing something with the scapegoat before Jesus, than attempted to do the same thing with Him the true Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. We had a Messianic Rabbi from Jews for Jesus who spoke on this subject, and he stated that the jews were afraid the goat would wander back, so they started sending someone to go out and make sure he didn't return. Wow, Paul, that is interesting. I love how so many of the stories I heard all my life actually have deeper meanings. We are studying John at BSF and his gospel is different in that he actually chose to include miracles of Jesus that had deeper spiritual truths to uncover. |

Hey Paul, That is a good parallel, and something I had not spotted before. It is amazing how must there is in Scripture, without having to invent stuff that is not there. Thanks, Adrian |

I have been away in England, hiding, busy, not much contact with SDAs anymore. But I drop in from time to time :-) God is really moving here at the moment, and we are involved in a number of missions and networking opportunities. So less time to chat on the Internet. God bless, Adrian |

Hi Colleen, I had such a great time, and things are buzzing here too. I sent you a personal message, hope you don't mind. Not quite sure what to post here. Good things happening, but difficulties too. God is so amazing, I could just cry sometimes. Adrian |
