One of my favorite hymns is "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less." But of course, it has that reference to "my anchor holds within the veil," which thoroughly does away with the Investigative Judgment. So when I was still in the SDA church, but had learned the IJ was false, I would often choose the hymn, and point out the Scriptural reference to Hebrews 6:19, 20. You know, get some people thinking.

In addition, the hymn is full of references to the free imputation of Christ's righteousness, a doctrine that SDAism utterly repudiates. So I have since decided to re-write the hymn for our SDA friends, to make it acceptable to Adventist theology.

Our Hope Is Built on Nothing Less
(modified to be SDA-kosher)

Our hope is built on nothing less
Than Ellen White, our prophetess.
We dare not trust the Bible's word
If it debunks one jot of hers.

Upon the Law we make our stand.
The grace of God is shifting sand.
The grace of God is shifting sand.

'Though Moses' veil obscures the Cross,
We know our works can pay the cost.
The Sabbath truth will save our souls,
Because the Cross can't make us whole.

Upon the Law we make our stand.
The grace of God is shifting sand.
The grace of God is shifting sand.

When perfect characters we make,
We'll pass the test for Sabbath's sake.
It's up to us to pay the debt.
Our trust in Christ we will not set.

Upon the Law we face the flood
So we won't trust in Jesus' blood.
No, we won't trust in Jesus' blood.

The year was 1844 and something was astir
Because the plucky Millerites thought big things would occur
But when they woke the morning of October 23
They all were disappointed and the cause was clear to see

The flock had played the numbers game and got the math all wrong
And now two cent’ries later we remember with this song
That if you need a certain way to flee the coming wrath
Then get a guy who knows his stuff before you do the math

Or better yet don’t set a date for when things should occur
And don’t tell anyone your thoughts no matter if you’re sure
Oh spare a thought for Miller while remembering his plight
For it was he who led the flock that cold October night

The legacy he left behind still haunts us to this day
Though many wish the numbers thing would simply go away
For now instead of saying that the earth was being cleansed
We got the funny notion that the Judgment had commenced

Initiated by the King’s decree, 457 starting
Then add in seven decades to the true prophetic charting
Subtract 490 from 2 thousand and 3 hundred
Which takes you right up to the end of days divinely numbered

Oh yes, of course, how silly that we never saw before…
Investigative Judgment starts in 1844
For if you know prophetically a day is like a year
The Sanctuary Doctrine, then, quite readily appears

And with the Prophet’s blessing we are certain that it’s true
Though other Bible scholars still don’t have the slightest clue
Which means that it’s our duty to proclaim it to the rest
To prove that we’re the Remnant whose theology is best.

Ahh poetry that gets to the heart of the matter.

Brent, brother I love that hymn too and it's hard to hear the tune in my head while reading the (real) SDA version.

I think that one needs to be pasted on facebook

Thanks, Brent and Animal, for the "in-house humor"! There's nothing quite like laughing at our own legacy...!!!

Yeah, Adventism shaped us for sure—and has made our redemption astonishing. Praise God!

Wow, I know it's supposed to be a funny parody (and it is!), but the truth in your new words is actually quite sad and frightening. "We know our works can pay the cost...the cross can't make us whole." Spine-tingling stuff.

If I could not laugh at my past, I would be crying all the time.
