Aloha everyone! It's been a while!!! Had to take a break from the forum for a recharge... Anyhow. Here is my post. TNT has made a movie about Ben Carson and it will air on Saturday night Feb. 7th. at 7:00PM Central time. I saw the preview and it looks pretty good. Cuba Gooding Jr. plays the good doctor. Let me just say this first: Ben Carson is a wonderful person and is truly gifted from God with the skills he has. My parents are all over this. My dad said that he has recieved an email from the church promoting this. So the question is, will this be a chance for SDA's to tell thier friends about the movie and then sucker them into "The Sabbath Truth" and make them members of the church? I am going to watch the show and see what it is all about and then post back here. Any thoughts??? Mahalo, Isaiah |

He's SDA, for sure, and of course Adventists will use this to attempt to reel in their friends. Ben Carson is a well-known neurosurgeon who has performed remarkable hemispherectomies on children with intractable seizure disorders as well as performing other difficult brain surgeries including the separation of conjoined twins. To be sure, he is an excellent surgeon. This excellence, however, is not attributable to Adventism. Adventism, however, "uses" Carson's excellence as a great PR tool. Colleen |

Ben Carson also did a cameo in the movie Stuck on You. He had a pretty funny line. Matt Damon related that when Dr. Carson said he was nervous about his part, Matt said, "Relax, this isn't brain surgery." (Message edited by bskillet on January 28, 2009) |

I read an article about the family in the paper once and they had a picture of the family. I thought his mom was wearing jewelry. Isn't it petty of me to notice something like that?! I was sda at the time and that is what sda's notice. I think Ben Carson is awesome! |

I forgot where this thread was so I wrote about the movie on another. I saw the movie last night. It said nothing about Carson's religious beliefs or the church he attends. Nada, zip!! The woman playing his mother had on earrings. So, if the SDAs hope to profit by it, sorry. Nothing was said about adventism in the movie. I did enjoy the story about a young man from adverse circumstances who became a very good doctor who has helped many people. Diana |

Adventist Church Sues Uncle Sam With continual litigation in their mind, the Court House News Service, reported on February 4, 2009, that the Seventh-day Adventist Church is suing Uncle Sam over trademark infringement in the HHS hotline phone number: 800-QUIT NOW in regard to smoking. The GC has hired a prestigious law firm in Alexandria, Va. to handle the case before Federal courts. There go more of the member's hard-earned tithe dollars! Apparently, with the dramatic decline in smoking in recent years, the SDA Church feels it is not getting any recognition or credit for this public health accomplishment in the United States. Perhaps they hope to gain some publicity for themselves in filing this lawsuit instead of being humbly grateful that smoking is now socially-unacceptable in American society. Dennis Fischer |

Dennis, Am I understanding correctly that the SDA church is suing the US government because there is less smoking in the US and they are not getting any credit??? What is the "trademark infringment they are suing about? Over a Phone number??? That makes no sense at all!!! Did they trademark a phone number? How nuts can that be??? Diana, The words "Quit Now" are supposedly registered as a trademark by the SDA Church. Dennis Fischer |

Maybe they should quit now before they end up looking like the south end of a Missouri mule. Oh oh, I see I just used the forbidden phrase. Phil |

I saw the movie, too. It was very good. No one would ever guess Carson is SDA from the movie, though. First was the mother's jewelry and then there was a scene in the kitchen of his home after he becomes wealthy. There were numerous bottles of liquor behind the kitchen sink. The movie got me thinking about something. Being a brain surgeon, Carson would be a good person to ask about Ellen White's visions. I would be very interested to know what he would say about that. I wonder if anyone has ever asked him. Honestwitness |

My wife Sharon and I saw the movie also, and we both enjoyed it. There was no mention, as Diana said, of the SDA church. There was one scene where Ben is about to go into surgury and says a quick prayer, "Thy will be done!" Prayer was allowed in the movie, so I think in this way God was exalted. There was no hint of a denomination that we could discern. The only thing I might have changed was the recurring theme of his mother telling him it was all in him, he didn't need the books, etc. The writers apparently wanted to push the usual self-reliance agenda. I imagine that Ben would have wanted more reliance on God. Other than that, a fine movie. Martin C |
