SDAs and other denominations allow remarriage for the "innocent party" in a divorce that was due to adultery. They also allow remarriage for the left behind spouse when the other decide to divorce. Jesus says:
quote:(Luke 16:18) “Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.
Where in the Bible is justification for remarriage? Hec |

I never noticed before this minute, but that verse only condemns men who remarry. |

Matthew 19:9 "I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery." NIV (Jesus' words) |

Hec, if we tries to overcome SDa way of thinking, than we must see that in that line Jesus is not talking about that issue to be a mater of salvation. Jesus is telling that if we say that we keeps God s commandments that we must push it to the end line not use it as we liked it. That is then truth that divorces and remarriages are both the breaking of the Law.Because we all are under curse (for some reason or another) and apart from God (Paul)there is one way to be saved and it is by faith not by deeds of the Law. So, there is no justification for remarriage like there is no justification for any other sin. Justification is apart from deeds in sphere of faith in Jesus. |

Gorancroatia, you are absolutely right. As our women's Bible study leader said when we were studying passages on marriage and divorce, God hates divorce, but it is not the unforgivable sin. If you have been divorced, ask God to forgive and redeem the situation, and move on. The issue is more defined in the new covenant. Read 1 Cor 7. The thing that's different now is that we are indwelled and made alive by the Holy Spirit. Now, we have the choice to submit things to Him and ask Him to give us His strength and to hold us in faithfulness and truth. Paul says, regarding believing and unbelieving spouses, that if the unbelieving spouse wishes to stay with the believing spouse, the believer is to let him/her stay. If the unbeliever wishes to leave, the believer is to let him/her go in peace. If the unbeliever wishes to stay, Paul suggests that "staying" has a sanctifying effect on the unbeliever. Think about it. In 1 Cor 6 Paul talks about adultery and says if we are adulterous, we unite the members of Christ with a "prostitute". The Holy Spirit does not leave us when we choose to sin, and if we sin in this way, we are literally taking Christ into the situation because we are part of His body. Same goes for marriage. If the unbelieving spouse chooses to stay with the believing spouse, in a very real sense (that was not the same prior to Pentecost), that person is choosing to stay in the presence of the Holy Spirit—in the presence of God. We can be the hands and heart of Jesus to them. None of this, however, means that we stay and receive repetitive abuse that puts us, our lives or children in actual danger. If we do, we are permitting a dangerous person to sin against us or against dependent children, and we have a responsibility to protect. I see the divorce question a bit differently than I used to because understanding that we are literally the body of Jesus makes all the metaphors more powerful. Marriage is the picture of Jesus' relationship with the church. We love and respect as He and we love and respect each other. Colleen |

That, "we are literally the body of Jesus" makes me thinking.....it is interesting point to consider! (Message edited by GoranCroatia on July 09, 2010) |
