Here is a link to an article I wrote some time ago. In it, I argue that Seventh-day Adventism has placed Sabbath observance at it's soterioligical center, rather than redemption through the shed blood of Jesus on Calvary's cross. Because of this misplaced emphasis, Seventh-day Adventism (as a religious and theological system) has created an enormous paradigm shift away from the gospel of Jesus and New Testament Christianity, into their own novel and unique belief system, which can not be considered truly Christian. It traces its ethos back to Ellen G. The Sabbath, properly understood, is a type or figure of redemption. It speaks of God's eternal plan to deal with our sin and meets us in the darkness of our understanding to bring us into His fellowship. This is a redemption that requires a blood-payment for sin, necessitates a God-man to be the mediator, emphasizes the work of God in redemption as opposed to anything man could do, ensures that God's wrath is satisfied by that sacrifice, and promises soulical rest forever to those who put their trust in Him. So not only is their view of salvation cacodoxical, but so is their understanding of the Sabbath. | ||

Yes, Terryohare! I love your deep understanding of Sabbath that you've gained without having been Adventist. I know that the Sunday Sabbatiarinism prevalent in some circles is very similar in pernicious deception as is the Adventist version. Thank you for sharing your insights. Colleen | ||

You can ask nearly any SDA member what is really important to being an Adventist. You would rarely, if ever, hear anything clearly stated about having simple faith in Jesus and loving one another (1 John 3:23). You would more likely hear something about keeping the "true Sabbath" and keeping ALL of His commandments, meaning the 10 Commandments. Along with that today "state of the dead" often runs second in the line of importance to the Sabbath. The simple message of salvation through the finished work of Jesus Christ wouldn't even be on any short list of important things, if on the list at all. | ||

You are so right, Tom. When I was an Adventist (age 24-50), it was always, "We're so thankful for the Sabbath", "Jesus kept the Sabbath". Rarely, was there talk of Jesus being the Lamb of God, our Sacrifice, or we're so thankful for Jesus paying the price for our sins. It was all about Sabbath, diet, lifestyle issues, state of the dead, Ellen White/SOP, etc. Not, as you said, the finished work of Jesus. | ||
