An article based on these two articles plus another website is going out in this week's Proclamation email and will be on the Proclamation blog. This is really an interesting story...an Australian orthopedic surgeon was anonymously reported for advising his patients to eat a low-carb, healthy-fat diet to try to preserve their limbs in cases of diabetes and to reduce inflammation, and the physicians regulatory board in Australia put a lifetime ban on him so he is never to give his patients diet advice again. As he tried to figure out where these anonymous tips originated, He discovered the Dietetic Association in Australia seemed implicated, and he discovered that the current national recommendations favoring vegetarian diets actually was originating from a long dietetics tradition that came from Adventists. In fact, it was an Adventist who founded and wrote the handbooks for the first America Dietetic Association...and she was a protege of John Harvey Kellogg. Colleen, It seems to me that the weight of Biblical Christian-historical evidence is firmly-AGAINST vegetarianism. While there were restrictions on unclean meats for the Israelites, there is no evidence of vegetarianism. Romans 14:2 seems to ridicule vegetarianism. I am researching a new chapter for the next edition of Lying for God, regarding the application of the Fiscus Judaicus, after the fall of the Temple in AD 70, after the siege and reduction of Jerusalem by Titus. Please be patient, because this will eventually show what happened with an early movement of Christian vegetarianism. The Fiscus Judaicus was an extremely-punitive tax against Jews, amounting to $14,000 for a family of four, in today's US dollars. The proceeds were used to rebuild a Roman pagan Temple. It was collected by the Synagogues on the Sabbath, and was based on the Temple Tax, which was no longer needed, since the Temple was destroyed (CF: Exodus 30:13, Nehemiah 10:33-34, Matthew 17:34). It is a matter of Roman Tax record that no Christians ever paid the Fiscus Judaicus, indicating that a complete "divorce" had taken place between Christianity and Judaism, no later than AD 72, when the tax was imposed. Emperor Domitian gave a blanket exemption to all Christians in AD 96, about the same time the Book of Revelation was being written. Critically, the New Testament makes no mention of the destruction of the Temple or the Fiscus Judaicus. It cannot be overstated the draconian destructive effect that these things had on Judaism. This indicates that Christian Sabbath-Keeping had ended MUCH earlier than previously thought, whether you accept the 72 AD or the 96 AD for the dates when Christians must have ceased synagogue attendance on the Sabbath. Sabbath Keeping and synagogue attendance were critical factors that the Romans used to determine who must pay the tax. Again, no Christians ever paid the tax and Christians were given a blanket exemption from the tax in AD 96. I think I can prove that only a handful of observant Jewish Christians localized around Jerusalem were still attending the Synagogue on the Sabbath by AD 72. Remember, it was Jesus's and Paul's personal "custom" to attend the Synagogue on the Sabbath. That "custom" was purely the result of Rabbinical decree, since the first Synagogues were not instituted until 200 BC, among disobedient-diaspora/Hellenized Jews who lived outside of the land of Israel. The very act of Synagogue attendance is disobedient to the Mosaic Law, since Numbers 15 mandates staying inside the home; and Deuteronomy 6 stresses that Torah study be done in the home. The center of Hellenized Judaism was Alexandria, Egypt. Under the Rabbinical interpretations of the Mosaic Law, Jews were barred from living in Egypt. (CF: Exodus 14:13; Deuteronomy 17:16; Deuteronomy 28:68) By AD 72, it seems clear that even most of the dwindling band of observant Jerusalem Jewish Christians had jettisoned that unbiblical "custom." I've written other chapters in Lying for God that demonstrate that the vast majority of First Century Jewish Christians were "Hellenized" Jews, who had jettisoned Sabbath-Keeping long before the Birth of Christ. (CF: 1 Maccabees) The shocking number of Hellenized Jews within First Century Christianity is based on social science research that has been done since 2004 or so. Gentiles were barred from Sabbath Keeping by unanimous decisions of the Jewish Courts (Deuteronomy 17, Matthew 23:1-3). Acts 15 resolved the issue of Sabbath Keeping once and forever, when the Apostles refused to impose circumcision on Gentile Christian converts. No circumcision = no Sabbath. The Fiscus Judaicus research has been done since 2004. And now some more modern social science shows what happened to the last of the Jerusalem Sabbath-Keeping Jewish Christians, after the imposition of the Fiscus Judaicus; and the outlawing of Sabbath Keeping throughout the Roman Empire by Emperor Hadrian in AD 135. Lots of Rabbis were executed under Hadrian's decree, but no Christians were. This fact alone compelled Adventist theologian Dr. Samuele Bacchiochi to concede that Christian "Sabbath-abandonment" was universal no later than 135 AD, 200 years before Ellen White's "vision" that claimed that it was caused by Constantine's edict. The last of the Jerusalem Sabbath-Keeping Jewish Christians formed into a tiny heresy known as the "Ebionites." They stressed circumcision, vegetarianism, Sabbath Keeping, and a outright rejection of the Divinity of Christ. It is known that the Ebionites fled for their lives (and avoiding the Fiscus Judaicus) from Jerusalem and the Roman Empire after 135 AD, and settled in Yemen and Arabia. A few Early Church Fathers denounced the heresy, but the trail of the Ebionites pretty much ran cold after 200 AD. Modern social science has resolved the riddle of what happened to the Ebionites. It turns out that Mohammed's wife and his main spiritual adviser were both Ebionites. Upon the founding of Islam, it is now thought that the Ebionites "folded" into Islam and disappeared in the 600 AD time-period. The effect of the Ebionites on Islam can be analyzed against Islam's adoption of the prohibition against pork and alcohol. Of course, Islam and the Ebionites both rejected the Incarnation and the Divinity of Christ, so there was fundamental agreement on that important issue. The Ebionites and Islam both stressed circumcision, in direct defiance of the ruling of the Apostles in Acts 15. Islam analyzes Abraham as the "first Muslim," so Muslims must practice the sign of his covenant. (CF: Genesis 17) In summary, the Adventist pioneers were candid. Along with the Ebionites and the Pharisees (CF: John 9:16), early Adventists recognized that Saturday-keeping was incompatible with the Divinity of Christ. The overwhelming majority of them were staunch Arian heretics that rejected both the Trinity and the Divinity of Christ. In light of history, Adventism can be analyzed as nothing more complex than a late-revival of the ancient Ebionite Heresy, when you take into account Adventism's emphasis on vegetarianism and Saturday-keeping. Adventist Fundamental Belief #2 is not even CLOSE to the historic Christian Trinity doctrine, although it falsely-labels itself as "Trinity." It totally-lacks the critical operative language of "of one substance and essence." And the Great Controversy is littered with references that are strongly Arian. Adventism's entire prophetic superstructure - based on Daniel 7:8 - is based on outright-Arianism. Adventist pioneers, Islam and Ebionites all agreed that Jesus was a supercharged-Angel on steroids, but not God. Jesus was NOT a vegetarian, since he ate the Passover meal, which mandates the eating of Lamb. Rejection of the Divinity of Christ is just one of the devastatingly-heavy prices to be paid for defiantly-disregarding 1 Timothy's denunciation of diet-restrictions as "Doctrines of Demons." The sad history of Islam, Ebionites, and Adventism shows this in neon lights. | ||

Here's my outrageously-abrasive analysis of Paul's command to the Christians of Corinth to eat pork that had been offered to idols: Paul advised the Christians of Corinth to eat pork that had been offered to idols, in 1 Corinthians 8-10. His main limitation on this outrageous advice was cheeky. It was "Do not ask, do not tell" "What you don't know can't hurt you." Are you shocked? Are you dismayed? Are you outraged? It's true. I know, I know. It's a hard habit to break after decades of smugly-eating fake soy Filet Mignon out of a can. But first, take a close-look a a good scholarly-refutation of my outrageous claim. It may give you some peace of mind. You might just say: "There goes old Res Judicata again, blowing hot air out of his silly neck hole. No way did Paul tell Christians to eat pork offered to idols. Ol' Res is full of it." The following superb scholarly analysis is the best one I have found. But here is the troubling "money-shot" that is the central flaw in its argument: "The celebrations of many cults were closely bound up with civic and social life since religion and politics were indivisible in ancient Hellenistic city life. If Christians took part in civic life, they would have been expected to participate in a festivals sacrificial meals in some form of another. The imperial cult, which frequently combined state craft with stagecraft, was especially important to Corinthian citizens, and sacrifices were part of the Isthmian games. Winter concludes: Over-confident and weak Christians alike were in danger, such was the power of privilege and the importance of the imperial cult, and more so when it was established on a federal basis and celebrated in Corinth." http://www.vanderbilt.edu/AnS/religious_studies/SNTS2002/garland.htm The writer of that article has never been to Ancient Corinth. And I say that with deep regret. Oh how I wished that article was true, when I was in Corinth, trying to salvage some tiny morsel of my fatally-battered Adventist belief system. But the "facts on the ground" in Greece simply annihilate Adventism. Corinth was one of the worst. The article does not mention a single word about the central landmark in Corinth. The epicenter of pagan religious ceremonies was the notorious Corinthian Temple of Aphrodite that towered above the city. You cannot miss it. Rest assured, "communal meals" were NOT what the Temple of Aphrodite was famous for. It was the ancient world's most notorious whorehouse. Here's an accurate summary of the Temple of Aphrodite (and Corinth), and what the economic powerhouse of the city: "Nothing gets a classical scholar’s heart pumping like the sacred prostitutes of Corinth, the Greek port that is depicted as the free-living “Amsterdam of the ancient world.” After landing at the Corinthian docks, sailors would apparently wheeze up the thousand-odd steps to the top of a stunning crag of rock called the Acrocorinth, which offered 360-degree vistas of the sparkling Mediterranean. There they would pass beneath the marble columns of the Temple of Aphrodite, goddess of Beauty and Love, within whose incense-filled, candlelit confines 1,000 comely girls supposedly worked around the clock gathering funds for their deity. Since the Renaissance, this idea had gripped antiquarians, who liked to imagine that congress with one of Aphrodite’s servants offered a mystical union with the goddess herself — uninhibited pagans coupling in ecstasy before her statue in the perpetual twilight of the temple." http://thesmartset.com/article11210701/ As part and parcel of the pagan sexual rites performed at the Temple, THOUSANDS of pigs were sacrificed daily. The Greeks have a TERRIBLE mania about sacrificing pigs. There is no other animal that is a worthy sacrifice to the gods, in the Greek mind. Their nasty addiction to sacrificing pigs and their love of pork is fully set out in 1 Maccabees 1:47 and 1:62-63: If you refused to eat pork that had been sacrificed to idols, the Greeks could get downright ugly, as shown in 2 Maccabees 7. The pigs that were sacrificed at the Temple of Aphrodite in Corinth were NOT eaten inside the Temple. There were no "communal meals" as envisioned in the Vanderbuilt University article. In fact, the Temple of Aphrodite was not primarily a local phenomena. Corinth sits on a very narrow isthmus. In the 1800's, the French cut a canal through the isthmus, much like they did with the Suez Canal in Egypt; and tried to do with the Panama Canal. The French were famous canal diggers. But in Paul's era, the Roman galleons would be dragged out of the water, and rolled across the Isthmus on hundreds of logs. Thousands of local Corinthians were paid for this job. It was brutal work. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diolkos Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of sailors visited the Temple of Aphrodite every year, while their boats were being moved across the Isthmus. The Temple catered to foreign sailors. Each sailor that enjoyed the Temple of Aphrodite had to buy a pig to be sacrificed. But there was no time to eat a communal meal. They had to hurry back to their ship. It took about four hours to yank those ships across the Isthmus. No time for each sailor to eat an entire pig at a communal meal. Much of the pork was resold to the ships, as food for the crews or as export. What a racket they had at Corinth! The sailors would buy a pig, and then the ship owners would buy it AGAIN! The Temple of Aphrodite was the economic driver of Ancient Corinth. After the pigs were sacrificed, the pork was taken to the meatmarkets in downtown Corinth, and resold. Remember, this is thousands of pigs every day. Virtually the only meat that you could buy in the meat market was pork. It flooded the market every day. Farmers in the Corinth area exclusively-raised pigs. It was obviously the most lucrative thing to raise, since cattle, lambs, and chickens were not allowed as sacrifices. The irrefutable proof of this is obvious, if you ever have a chance to visit Ancient Corinth. And here is Paul's devastating "money-shot," from 1 Corinthians 10: "25 Eat whatever is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience’ sake; 26 for “the earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness. 27 If any of those who do not believe invites you to dinner, and you desire to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no question for conscience’ sake. 28 But if anyone says to you, “This was offered to idols,” do not eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for conscience’ sake." In other words, "Don't ask, Don't Tell. What you don't know won't hurt you." Once you understand the "lay of the land" and how the economy of Ancient Corinth worked, the evidence is simply unanimous and irrefutable. It is terrible being an Adventist in Corinth. Your Adventism will not last a day. I'm sorry if I have ruined your day, but this is the truth. Paul advised the Ancient Corinthians to eat pork sacrificed to idols. | ||

Sorry, in my post about the Fiscus Judaicus, I made a typo. Jesus's payment of the Temple Tax is not Matthew 17:34. It is found in Matthew 17:24-27: "24 When they had come to Capernaum, those who received the temple tax came to Peter and said, “Does your Teacher not pay the temple tax?” 25 He said, “Yes.” And when he had come into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take customs or taxes, from their sons or from strangers?” 26 Peter said to Him, “From strangers.” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free. 27 Nevertheless, lest we offend them, go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. And when you have opened its mouth, you will find a piece of money;[h] take that and give it to them for Me and you.” Adventists frequently boast and gloat that they "follow Jesus's example." Paying the Bible's mandatory Temple tax is apparently not an example of that. Christians apparently jettisoned Jesus's example of Temple Tax payment immediately after the destruction of the Temple, in AD 70. The collection of the Temple tax occurred on Sabbath in the Synagogues. | ||

Here is a direct link to the CrossFit presentation by Dr. Gary Fettke on August 18, 2017, "The Role of Nutrition in Everything". He repeatedly mentions the Seventh-day Adventist church and Ellen G. White in his presentation. I'm a bit of a Crossfit fan, but never saw this until today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctkvriSwX8I I don't endorse everything he says, and I do question his evolutionary point of view, which seems to be a significant part of his world view. I know a number of healthy vegetarians, so wonder whether at least it should be acknowledged that mankind is omnivorous. The effect of SDAism is staggeringly large for such a small religious group, and to me, it points to the corruption and brainwashing that goes on in and by this organization, and how widespread its influence is. | ||

Leifl, I agree. LLU has recently published a report that they have influenced world nutrition since the mid 19th century, and that is certainly a fact. Last year we ran an article on the Proclamation blog site referencing an article by journalist Marika Sboros that covered the story of an Australian orthopedist who was forbidden by the national licensing agency from making dietary recommendations to his orthopedic patients. As he began to try to figure out what was behind this sanction, he uncovered the national dietetics association's amended recommendations for primarily vegetarian diets. The article referenced Gary Fettke, and it implicated Seventh-day Adventism. It was a fascinating article.
