... it's been a super LOOOOOONG time since I have posted here. So I hope this isn't a duplicate of another running thread. One of my FB friends posted this on her timeline on Friday: "Two lovely young ladies came to my door, handed me a pamphlet, and invited me to a service on Sunday that "celebrates the anniversary of Jesus's death". I promptly told them that I would be at my home church this Sunday, but that is not what I would be celebrating because, guess what? My God is NOT dead- He is alive! May I never take that knowledge for granted." This impacted me... how many times in my adventist life had I said that I was celebrating Christ's death?? Today, we spent the afternoon at an adventist relative's home celebrating Easter. TWICE.... twice I heard my adventist family say that we were celebrating Christ's death!!! My ears and eyes nearly popped out of my head! Right before prayer, it was said that they were happy people were over celebrating Christ's death. Then after dinner, the tradition is to hand out the resurrection eggs that have reminders of the different events surrounding Christ's death and resurrection. These eggs are called "resurrection eggs". It was announced that they were handing out "the resurrection eggs that celebrate Christ's death"... Has anyone else heard this today??? ~vivian |

Adventists CELEBRATE the day the dead Jesus spent in the tomb. Jesus is the Bread of Life and the Manna from heaven (John 6). Adventists CELEBRATE the day that Jews did nothing, and were to be killed if they did something. Adventist CELEBRATE the day of the week in Exodus 16, when no Manna was unavailable. Adventists do not celebrate the Day of Pentecost (The "Birthday of the Church"), but instead, CELEBRATE the "Great Disappointment," which is the birthday of Adventism. For obvious reasons, many Adventists are clinically-depressed and suffer from frequent bouts of anxiety. |

I've been out of Adventism for a little over a year and this Easter it's just beginning to strike me how jarring and out-of-place the SDA calendar is with Christianity. You can bet many Adventist homes are busy "preparing" for the sabbath on Good Friday, as our Lord suffered on the cross and delivered us from our sins! I add that many of the Jewish leaders were eager to have Christ killed so that they could hurry home to observe the sabbath. SATURDAY Christ is in the grave, and I've lost count how many times SDAs remind me that he was resting and observing the sabbath in doing so. No hint of "Sunday is coming!" SUNDAY I don't even want to think of what Adventists are doing on Sunday...which is only, like, the most wonderful, joyous day in the entire Christian calendar. Even the church I used to attend (which was progressive SDA) by design could not celebrate resurrection Sunday at church, but had to resort to having sunrise picnics on Sundays. Final observation. It just occurred to me that there is one other point of (accidental) contact between SDAs and Catholics. The Catholics have their Mass, which is basically a continual resacrifice of Christ. Any good Catholic must constantly come to Mass because the one-time offering of Christ apparently wasn't good enough. While SDAs don't have the Mass, the atonement of Christ is incomplete in their theology as well, and now, as Vivian points out, it is also strikingly lacking in their calendar. No complete atonement. No real resurrection. No born-again, Spirit-filled *resurrection* life! Kaspars |

Wow. YES! What great posts above! I am also increasingly horrified by Adventism's celebration of Jesus' entombment on Sabbath. My goodness...Sabbath is an idol! They proclaim Jesus' faithful honoring of the Sabbath by being DEAD on that day. Sabbath is honored by His being...DEAD?? The incomplete atonement is never more front and center than at Easter. It is impossible for Adventists to actually understand and rejoice in the resurrection when they have no understanding of what it means to be born again. I never, as an Adventist, understood what it meant that our new birth, our eternal life, was the consequence of the Resurrection. Res, you are so right in pointing out that it is no accident Adventists are depressed and anxious. Great comparison between the Catholic mass and the SDA incomplete atonement, Kaspars. Vivian, it's good to see you! Colleen |

Collen, Am I thinking this correctly? a). Manna was unavailable on the Sabbath (Exodus 16:25-26) b). Jesus plainly said he was the Manna from Heaven (John 6:30-33) c). Our Manna from Heaven spent the day in the Tomb on the Sabbath, and was unavailable. Doesn't this make Exodus 16 a typology of the day that Jesus spent in the Tomb? Wasn't it preparing the Jews for the day that Jesus would be killed as the ultimate Passover lamb? This seems so obvious, that I am convinced I must be wrong. |

WOW! I thought it was only JW's who celebrated Jesus death. I have never heard about it in the SDA church. They are always changing. I am so very happy The Gospel of Jesus Christ never changes. |

I had never really thought about this before this year. I can't remember what was said other years... or what I might have said about Easter when I was Adventist. I do remember a Baptist friend of mine asking me why Adventists don't celebrate Good Friday. At the time I had seen "Good Friday" on calendars but it didn't really mean anything to me. I told her that I didn't know. It just breaks my heart to see that Christ's death is being celebrated on His resurrection day... |

Res, I hadn't thought of that in that way before. It's possible that there is a shadow of that day of death in the manna's lack of falling on the Sabbath. At the same time, the people HAD manna on the Sabbath; it just didn't fall on the Sabbath, and they didn't have to collect it on the Sabbath. God providentially preserved Friday's gathering an extra day and gave extra provision. He provided His own grace to them on the day they rested from their work. To be sure, though, Jesus' death is the means by which His grace to us when we do not work becomes possible. All of the OT shadows do point to the reality of the Lord Jesus, and we already know that no single "shadow" can embody the whole. It's interesting to ponder! Colleen |
