Hi there, So my husband and I were talking about why I don't agree with Adventism, and I blanked on how to explain it to him. I'm not sure if he still considers himself an Adventist or not, but we were both talking about how we miss the Adventist community, even if we don't agree with all of their beliefs. Anyway, I think it would help me talk to him about the old and new covenants if I could show him that the 10 commandments were part of the old covenant law, and that when it says the law, it's referring to the 10 commandments and the other laws given. I just don't know where it shows this in the Bible. I've found it in the past, but I didn't take notes on it. Also, he said that he thinks it's weird that 9 out of 10 of the 10 commandments are in the new testament, but that the sabbath one isn't. I wasn't sure what to say to that. Is it true that 9 out of 10 of the commandments are in the new testament? I've found some of them, but not all, like taking God's name in vain. Thanks for any help you might have! Sheree |

The ministry of death, written and graven on stones, was the old covenant. Read the whole section and how Paul contrasts the old covenant (written on stone, passing away) to the new covenant (of the spirit, written on the heart, which is far more glorious). 2 Corinthians 3 4 And we have such trust through Christ toward God. 5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, 6 who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit;[a] for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. 7 But if the ministry of death, written and engraved on stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of the glory of his countenance, which glory was passing away, 8 how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? 9 For if the ministry of condemnation had glory, the ministry of righteousness exceeds much more in glory. 10 For even what was made glorious had no glory in this respect, because of the glory that excels. 11 For if what is passing away was glorious, what remains is much more glorious. 12 Therefore, since we have such hope, we use great boldness of speech— 13 unlike Moses, who put a veil over his face so that the children of Israel could not look steadily at the end of what was passing away. 14 But their minds were blinded. For until this day the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away in Christ. (Message edited by leifl on February 13, 2017) |

When the ten commandments were given to Israel, they were "the covenant" that the Lord gave to them. I can't find anything else, (except the Sabbath in Exodus 31:16), that is specifically identified as the "covenant" that God made with Israel, which Christians understand as the "old covenant". Deuteronomy 5 1 And Moses called all Israel, and said to them: “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your hearing today, that you may learn them and be careful to observe them. 2 The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb. 3 The Lord did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, those who are here today, all of us who are alive. 4 The Lord talked with you face to face on the mountain from the midst of the fire. 5 I stood between the Lord and you at that time, to declare to you the word of the Lord; for you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up the mountain. He said: 6 ‘I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 7 ‘You shall have no other gods before Me. .... |

Hebrews 8 and 9 are split in an unnatural place ... read these verses together. The tablets of the covenant, or ten commandments, are now obsolete, growing old, and ready to vanish away. Emphasis mine. 13 In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away. 1 Then indeed, even the first covenant had ordinances of divine service and the earthly sanctuary. 2 For a tabernacle was prepared: the first part, in which was the lampstand, the table, and the showbread, which is called the sanctuary; 3 and behind the second veil, the part of the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of All, 4 which had the golden censer and the ark of the covenant overlaid on all sides with gold, in which were the golden pot that had the manna, Aaron’s rod that budded, and the TABLETS OF THE COVENANT; 5 and above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail. |

That being said, there is enduring moral instruction in the Decalogue, as there is in the whole of the Torah. The mistake is often made to understand the Ten Commandments as "moral" and the rest of the law as "ceremonial". There is a ritual law in the ten, and ethical laws throughout the 5 Books of Moses. https://youarecompleteinhim.com/2014/01/24/sabbath-moral-or-ceremonial-law/ I'm not against the law; it is inspired by God and "holy, just, and good". But keeping the law can't give us access to God, or favour in his sight - only faith in Chriat and his shed blood on the cross can accomplish that. And applying old covenant ceremonies to new covenant Christians is a fall from grace. It is categorically forbidden. (Message edited by Leifl on February 14, 2017) |
