So I was just reading that Joseph smith died in July of 1844 and that Ellen had her first vision in December, 1844. Just curious how many of you think they were possibly inspired by the same source?

Well, I certainly know I've had that thought...I can't prove anything, but as a friend of ours (a Lutheran never-been) says, "The cults all have the same chairman of the board."

It does seem perhaps significant to me that Smith's death preceded EGWs vision so closely...plus there is the suggestion that there was contact between the Harmons and Mormonism. Apparently public records show that Ellen's mother and sister died in Nauvoo, the Mormon stronghold town, and Joseph Smith's sixth wife was a second cousin to Ellen.

There is actually some evidence that EGW plagiarized Joseph Smith.

Oh, wow, Taluur...is this the website of Rolaant McKenzie? He is truly a scholar and very careful in his research. I attempted to go to the homepage but could not open it without downloading Flash...

Nevertheless, if this is Rolannt's site, I do trust his scholarship, and others have done similar comparisons as well. Rolaant wrote his story of coming to know that Adventism was wrong through his research as a librarian in the Heritage Room at Loma Linda University, La Sierra Campus, here: http://www.lifeassuranceministries.org/proclamation/2014/4/faithstorybyrola.html
