Does your checksum work to protect you against false teachings? A checksum is a count of the number of bits in a transmission unit that is included with the unit so that the receiver can check to see whether the same number of bits arrived. If the counts match, it's assumed that the complete transmission was received. Our brains have the wonderful ability to act much like a checksum. If you have read the Bible through at least once, then no matter what someone says or teaches a normal brain can detect whether a statement is true or false. Have you read the whole Bible? |

I have read the entire New Testament. I am reading the Old Testament through now. I am in Proverbs. Reading the entire Bible aloud to my mother is becoming a 3-year task. She is devout SDA. |

That is a really good point, River. Yes, it can be a three-year task. Nevertheless, reading the whole Bible does inform our background understanding. Richard and I have slowly read the Bible through together about six or seven times over a period of years (more years than the times we read it.) Both of us are noticing that we are understanding sequences and events and judgments and deliverances of God in a way we never understood them before we began reading the Bible through. We used a historical reading plan, reading books that covered the events of history in order (not necessarily in the order they were written). This last time through we have been using a chronological plan that is placing the books in the approximate order in which they were written. It's very interesting to read the chronological plan after the historical plan. For example, the Chronicles were written AFTER the return of the Jews from Babylon to Judah, while the Samuels and the Kings were written before. This difference is really interesting, because when they returned, Ezra and Nehemiah record that the returnees were carefully tracing the ancestry of the people who came back, determining who had a legitimate heritage, which Levites were genetically qualified for service in the temple, etc. The Chronicles are books in which the post-exilic scribes recorded a brief history of the nation and the monarchies and the heads of families so the returnees would be identified and properly qualified for work and inheritance. In spite of the tedium of hard-to-pronounce names and the numbers of people from each family, it's quite interesting when one see when and why these things were written. These records show that the line of the Promised Seed was never lost. Colleen |

Not only that, but there's this: John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. We won't remember what he has said to us if we haven't read it. |

I benefit from my audio bible on my MP3 device. I can hear the word faster than I can read it because that is how my brain is wired. And it is such a small device that I can take it anywhere and use it during down times when they occur. Try it !! Animal |

There are several online reading programs, Benevento. For example, ESVbible.org is the English Standard Version online Bible. It includes daily reading plans. Colleen |
