While the doctrine of imputation also explains how we have inherited a sin nature through the sin of Adam the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ is the foundation of the Christian faith with a multitude of verses supporting this doctrine listed at this website: http://www.openbible.info/topics/imputed_righteousness Imparted righteousness is the belief of Wesleyans (Methodist church) and Seventh-day Adventist as outline in this website: http://www.theopedia.com/Imparted_righteousness For Adventist this leads to the belief that you can personally overcome sin and eventually achieve perfection. As for my own experience as a former Adventist this results in the imbedded tendency to 'work' at overcoming sin instead of submitting to the righteousness of Jesus Christ as the Apostle Paul outlined in Romans 7:21-25. Justification, righteousness and sanctification is totally of Jesus Christ. Our victory over sin is the work of our Lord and Savior. Therefore, the Adventist version of 'imparted righteousness' is a false doctrine that leads to the belief that you can work at you own perfection. The Apostle Paul says we cannot do that and is a foundational reason for what he says in Gal. 1:9. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose. (Galatians 2:20-21 ESV) Fearless Phil | ||

It is important to understand that the issue about imputed and imparted righteousness is about how we are saved, or how we are "justified". Others have provided the links to the Bible verses, I would describe the difference in these simple terms Imputed righteousness - God declares us to be righteous because He has counted the righteous life of Christ instead (or in place) of our unrighteous life. Christ's righteous life is judged worthy, and we are "counted" righteous based on His life. Imparted righteousness - God empowers us to become righteous. God has placed within us the power to become righteous, so that God can only consider us righteous if our lives are truly righteous (based on cooperating with the power placed within you). Please note that Imputed Righteousness does not negate the idea of Sanctification. The correct biblical teaching maintains both of these in their proper place. We are saved, our righteousness before God is based solely on Christ in our place. We are also sanctified, God does place the Spirit within us, empowering us and changing us. But these changes do not makes us righteous. | ||

Ric,that is how I understood the topic but you put it in easier words to understand. Thanks. I was trying to explain this to a SDA loved one but I am not making much headway. He always getsback to you cannot get eternal life with Jesus unless you observe the weekly Sabbath and don't eat pork. I ask him what I do on Saturdays that I shouldn't or what I don't do on Saturday that I should and he replys that I go to church on Sundays. Yeah, so what? That doesn't answer my question to him at all. |
