At the Michigan FAF conference Pastor Gary Inrig preached from Heb. 1:1-4 that ‘in these days' the word of God only comes directly from Jesus Christ. It is no longer given through ‘the prophets of old’. Adventist make the claim that Ellen White’s words are ‘the testimony of Jesus’ and therefore called her the ‘spirit of prophecy’.
The clear message of Heb. 1:1-4 establishes beyond any doubt that there can be no inspired word of God added to Scripture. Her writings would have to been written during the time of the apostles. She was born and lived far too late. Her source of inspiration would have to been directly from our Lord. For her to claim her source to have been a ‘spirit guide’ is a self-evident proof of her being a false prophet.
In order to uphold their unique interpretations of Scripture Adventist must filter their understanding of the Bible through Ellen White. In effect, the works of Ellen are worshiped more than the written words of the Bible. We are reminded in Rev. 19:9 that it is idolatry to worship anyone or anything other than God. Since Jesus Christ is the source and true author of the book of Revelation (Rev. 1:1) only his words can be called ‘the spirit of prophecy’. It is blasphemy to refer to Ellen White by this title. I would like to correct and clarify one statement of mine in the above post (#2939): We worship only God who is the source and true author of all Scripture. While Scripture is holy and totally trustworthy it isn't who are what we worship. If we were to do that it would be somewhat like worshiping creation instead of the Creator. Fearless Phil | ||

Thanks Phil, I've used that type of reasoning as well but it doesn't go down well with some SDAs who will claim that Paul writes we should not despise prophecy, that prophets should be tested and that during the apostolic time (= after Jesus) there were true prophets and - last but not least - Revelation 19 talks of the remnant holding to the testimony of Jesus being the Spirit of Prophecy. By that they argue that we are wrong, there must be last-day-prophets after the canon was written and their word is to be taken seriously. Of course, they are right with these Bible verses. What they misunderstand is that EGW is - as you stated - not the Spirit of Prophecy. Hence her writings cannot be an authoritative source of truth. I guess it's a matter of the veil being lifted: as long as they read Scripture through the Adventist glasses they will not understand. That's why they have us, so we can pray for them. I found arguments to be futile in discussions with them. |
