"The brain nerves which communicate with the entire system are the ONLY medium through which Heaven can communicate to man and affect his inmost life. Whatever disturbs the circulation of the electric currents in the nervous system lessens the strength of the vital powers, and the result is a deadening of the sensibilities of the mind." 133Testimonies for the Church 2:347 This is what you have to believe if you don't believe that we have spirits...I guess if we have "defective brain nerves" God just can't get through to us. Just how defective do they have to be to make God powerless? |

In her explanation, the geniuses in the world have the best potential for anything from God. Maybe she forgot about Solomon and his woes of intellectual superiority. And how about his declaring that 'increase of knowledge increases sorrow'? It seems to me that each of us must have the precise mental capacity best tailored for each. What about the 'peace that passes UNDERSTANDING'? What about John leaping for joy in his mother's womb? Skipping spiritual aspects altogether, EW assumes facts not in evidence as they say in courts if someone just makes a declaration as though it were scientific fact. As far as defective brain nerves, I'm already past that. I have days when I'm dumb as dirt. Mornings so dumb that I stare at orange juice because it says "concentrate". Charles |

Much of Ellen's early "health message" writings were derived from concepts rampant in Phrenology. Compare: "After they have reduced their physical strength by a reduced quantity and a poor quality of food, some conclude that their former way of living is the best. The system must be nourished. Yet we do not hesitate to say that flesh meat is not necessary for health or strength. If used it is because a depraved appetite craves it. Its use excites the animal propensities to increased activity and strengthens the animal passions. When the animal propensities are increased, the intellectual and moral powers are decreased. The use of the flesh of animals tends to cause a grossness of body and benumbs the fine sensibilities of the mind." Ellen G. White, Testimony Treasures Volume 1, page 195 vs. "VITATIVE' ESS. of farinaceous rather than of flesh diet, for meat is directly calculated to inflame the animal passions; avoid temptation and incentives to anger and sensuality; especially associate only with the good, never with those who are vulgar or vicious; but most of all, cultivate the higher, purer moral faculties, and aspire to the high and good; also cultivate love of nature's beauties and works, as the very best means of restraining the animal passions. Of Practical Phrenologists / by O.S. and L.N. Fowler ; revised by Nelson Sizer. Author: Fowler, O. S. (Orson Squire), 1809-1887 and "Since alcoholic drinks excite the animal passions more than the intellectual and moral faculties, why not also meat, condiments, and all stimulating food as well? And why not vegeta' les and the cereals, by keeping the system cool, promote mental quiet, intellectual clearness, and moral elevation? At all events, less meats and more vegetables, grains, and fruits would render men less sensual, and more talented and good. And those who would become either, must mind what and how they eat." Precious rays of light, shining from the throne of long-debunked medical quackery.. |

Where do you think Ellen got the electric currents concept? "These ganglia or nerve centres are more nor less than sub stations relay places where the efficiency of the nerve current from the the central power house of whole organism in general and of entire nervous system in particular the alpha and omego of all fibres is boosted maintained re in forced by these nerve centres the body Whereby this nerve current or power is transmitted to its objective point in sufficient volume and to accelerate normal functional minus a very small per cent loss of its original or initial efficiency at starting point the brain to continue this functional activity interruption on the same general plan as the alternating current..." Yes Colleen, concentrate! haha! Kind of the opposite of new age nonsense. That book you gave me, "A Time of Departing" is verily interesting! And besides that, it's something for me to 'concentrate' on. ;-) Charles |

Great quotes, Freeatlast! Thank you for digging them up. I have come to believe she "borrowed" just about everything she wrote. Love the "concentrate" joke, Charles! |
