I'm working on my editorial for this next issue of Proclamation which is currently being designed. (We're almost there...!) I am referring to a segment from last week's Adventist News Network video segment featuring the history of the Adventist church. I have to share this with you. It's just over four minutes long, but it quotes Joseph Bates defining the "Good News" as "the seventh day is the Lord's Day". It also has segments with Dwight Nelson arguing that EGW is God's "friend" whom He sent, as he sent prophets before every major event in history, to prepare the way. It also has Merlin Burt saying EGWs ministry had two parts: to point us to Jesus, and to point us to Scripture. I'd love to hear your feedback. The wording of this is so seductive and deceptive and horrifying. You can watch the segment here: http://news.adventist.org/archive/videos/2013/06/21/150-year-anniversary-june-21-2013 Colleen |

Ugggg! How can they think that avoiding work and singing "Day is Dying in the West" on one particular day is the good news of the gospel?!? I wonder if it's so that they can say: "ah, now HERE is something I can do to merit eternal life!" What about the love, joy and peace promised to those who have the Spirit... "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." Galatians 5:22 Adventists seem to think those are just works that they have to do in order to be right with God. No, it's not works. Philippians 4:7 calls that peace the "peace that surpasses all understanding." Now that's good news! Also there's eternal life that's actually a FREE GIFT (Romans 5:17) which is REALLY a free gift when people "believe on Jesus" (Acts 16:31) and which is "not your own doing" and "not a result of works" (Ephesians 2:8-9). No, I'm afraid that SDA "good news" is actually very bad news. EGW doesn't point us to Jesus, but to how well we think we're progressing. |

It looks like Joseph Bates and EG White wanted to enslave Christians to "weak and worthless elementary principles of the world." "Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. 9 But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more? 10 You observe days and months and seasons and years! 11 I am afraid I may have labored over you in vain." Galatians 4:8-11. Here are mentioned all the various Sabbaths commanded in the old covenant - the weekly, the monthly and the seasonal/annual, just like what are mentioned as having been fulfilled by Jesus in Colossians 2:16-17 " Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. 17 These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ." |

I looked on the search website in vain because I remember Bates saying it as "the good news is that the seventh day is the Sabbath, not "Lord's Day" but I could be wrong. Anyway it seems easy to me that they could spin / litigate it to suit themselves. As I saw it I thought that at best it was a prevarication and at worst completely lies. I recall Myra's testimony with "Light Bearer" that seemed to verify that every major doctrine had to be validated by EGW. Nice touch with a broken English speaking Latina as presenting speaker probably targeting Hispanic audiences. Charles |

Exactly. The weekly Adventist News Network video definitely attempts to have an international flavor. This is one segment of the half-hour show. They are produced every Thursday. Sometimes they're not online until Friday; we usually watch it over Friday breakfast... ;) Colleen |

Does anyone know why, when I briefly subscribed to the ANN, the emails I received were addressed to "False" instead of my name? Like I was on some sort of "false watch list" ? I did this maybe 6 months or so after asking my home church to remove me from the SDA membership roll then was interested to follow the ANN just to see what was out there since I had been unchurched since the early 70's... The "false" designation creeped me out so I unsubscribed .... |

Wow! Can't explain it, but I agree, that would be creepy. Such weirdness... Colleen |

More than likely a mistake by someone in their IT department who mapped the wrong field to RealName. In IT many Yes No things are stored as True False. Like Subscribes to ____ publication True/False or Past Due on something True/False _______ in that case false is a good thing . I would suspect you are not the only one who got that, and likely some others wonder why they got True. |

Thank you Lucias - I guess not as intentional as I presumed, room for less creepy explanation ..... I am far removed from IT type stuff -- I did ask ANN by email for explaination but never got one ....so again thanks for relating it to a possible mistake ... I can live with that :-) |

Charles (Trans4mer), you are right. I found this quote on the EGW Estate website: On returning to Fairhaven, he met a friend, Captain Hall, at the old bridge approach. Hall asked him, “What’s the news, Captain Bates?” He replied, “The news is that the seventh day is the Sabbath.” |

Colleen, I watched the video clip a couple of times. What struck me was Dwight Nelson's argument for EGW's prophetic gift based on an assumption (unbiblical) that God would raise up a prophet just before the greatest event in history, the return of Christ. He bases his argument on logic, not scripture. He implies that we wouldn't be able to figure it out without EGW to guide us. Everything is focused on EGW even though they try to downplay her role in the formation of the SDA church. What does scripture say? Acts 2:17: In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Sounds like more than one to me. Yet they use this text & apply it solely to support the prophetic ministry of EGW. She's the one and only, and we need her because without her we would not be able to understand the scriptures. Very slick advertising. Nelson's argument can be summarized as follows: God had a prophet in every age; we live in the last age (epoch); therefore God will call a prophet in this age - and by the way it just happens to be a 17 year old American girl that God called back in 1844. It seems to me that the work of the Holy Spirit is to lead us into all truth. For Nelson to say that we needed EGW because "we couldn't figure it out on our own" seems to me to denigrate the work of the Holy Spirit. Anyways, those are some of my thoughts about Dwight Nelson's comments. He tries to make it sound so logical that it must be true. So you're right Colleen. It is deceptive. |

Yes, Jesus said He would send the Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth, not a prophet(ess)! |

I also watched the video several times. The fellow says they follow the bible but they then say they need Ellen White to interpret the Bible. That is opposite to what the bible teaches, through God Himself. |

Yes, the video is self-contradictory, as is Ellen herself. And how interesting that they edited the Joseph Bates quote...making "Sabbath" the "Lord's Day". The thumbprint of Adventism is morphing deception. Colleen |

Just another denial that the SDA church is based on scripture, not EGW! |
