I received this EGW quote from a collection of EGW manuscripts someone shared with Dale Ratzlaff. I have read similar things to this before, but this quote surely explains the abusive, shaming behavior of so many Adventist homes.
quote:Parents, I saw, stood in the place of God to their children, and they will have to render an awful account whether they have been faithful to the little few that have been committed to their trust. I saw that you were rearing children to be cut down by the destroying angel unless you speedily turn square about and be faithful to your children. Think you that God can cover or hide iniquity in children and preserve them whom he hates? No, never. God hates unruly children who manifest passion and evil tempers, etc. He can not save them in the time of trouble, They will be eternally lost through parents’ neglect. Their blood will be upon their parents. How can parents be saved with the blood of their children upon them, when they might have saved their children? God says, “I know Abraham, that he will command his household after him” Parents, it is your duty to have your children under perfect subjection, having all their passions and evil tempers perfectly subdued. I saw that if they were carried to the house of God, they should be made to know where they were, that they were not at home, but where God met with His people, and they should be kept quiet form all play and running about, and then God will deign to meet with His people.
What darkness God rescued us from... Colleen |

That woman is/was nothing but a fear monger. She couldn't even stay home and raise her own but could write poor William letters of fear of God if he was not perfect or what she preserved as perfect. |

And basically, it turns parents into assuming the role of the Pharisees. They have to make sure they and their children follow the rules to the letter. Not a pretty role to be in. Surfy |

That sounds like Child Guidance or Adventist Home. I hated those books. I could never measure up and if I was suppose to she never said how to accomplish anything. Those books were given as assignments when I took classes at AU. We were suppose to pull out quotes and put them on 3x5 cards. Bad memories!!! |

God hates unruly children? I expect a few modern day restaurant patrons do and in EGWs day "children should be seen but not heard" was the rule; but I doubt my God feels the same way. God could not "hate" a child. |

This type of devilish parenting advice (and judgments about God's character), as well as the horrific letters she wrote to her son, and other young people, was one of the final straws for me being able to say, without any doubt, that this woman absolutely could not have been God's servant. There is no prophet of God, or any other Holy Spirit filled person, who could say any of these things. What she says doesn't line up with the Scriptural descriptions of the character of God, or what I know of Him. I remember reading these things and having that strong sense over and over that true followers of God don't speak like this... I finally understood John 10:27, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." |

I have been blessed listening to Pastor Jim Cymbala of Brooklyn Tabernacle- I just listened to a recording of him ministering to the children of his congregation and it was a sweet antidote to the EGW quote and all the memories of spiritual abuse growing up SDA - this is a link to his sermon and it made me cry at his sweetness in preaching grace and mercy and the power of prayer to the kids... http://btdownloads.edgesuite.net/sermons/2011/2011_05.29.11_Why_I_Love_Jesus.mp3 |

And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them. (Mark 10:13-16 ESV) While I can't be sure,(I wasn't there) I can't imagine people stopping small children from being around Jesus if they were behaving perfectly. We have all been around kids after church and they are running around and having fun. Which in my mind makes the following quote even more heinous. "having all their passions and evil tempers perfectly subdued. I saw that if they were carried to the house of God, they should be made to know where they were, that they were not at home, but where God met with His people, and they should be kept quiet form all play and running about, and then God will deign to meet with His people." |
