Exodus 31:13-18 13 "Say to the Israelites, 'You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy. 14 “‘Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it is to be put to death; those who do any work on that day must be cut off from their people. 15 For six days work is to be done, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day is to be put to death. 16 The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. 17 It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.’” 18 When the Lord finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the covenant law, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God. The Sabbath is the sign of the Old Covenant. The Blood of Jesus is the sign of the New Covenant. (The Lord's Supper) (It's a side-topic, but I've also heard it is baptism.) It occurs to me that the sign of the Old Covenant is still the Sabbath. It will always be the Sabbath. I think of a sign to be comparable to wearing the colors of your country, or putting on a uniform of a particular group. Since I am not under the law, why in the world would I want to wear the colors of that Old Covenant by keeping the Sabbath? | ||

As a SDA we were taught The Sabbath teaching in Sunday churches was taught that's people believed Sunday was "the Sabbath " now, that the holy say was transferred to Sunday. I have occassionally gone to Sunday churches that actually teach that. Some of the more strict Mennonite churches teach that's and their folks keep Sunday every but as strict as SDA 's do Saturday but for the most part very few in Christianity practice that. Every service i have been to within the confines of the denominations i prefer to spend my time in if the Sabbath is mentioned it is referring to The seventh day in a Biblical context. | ||

Katarain, To clarify, as far as I see it based on the Bible, there were two signs of the old covenant - circumcision (carried on from the Abrahamic covenant) as the sign of entry into the covenant, and Sabbath, as the permanent, on-going sign of remembrance. These are replaced in the new covenant by baptism, one-time act signifying entry, and the Lord's Supper, Holy Communion, as the continuing remembrance ceremony. These are the only two "ceremonies" or external acts commanded in the New Testament, otherwise it is "believe in Jesus and love one another" That would explain why Paul is so adamant against circumcision, as without it none of the rest of the old covenant law would even count, as you would not even be in the covenant at all. Sabbath keeping without circumcision is meaningless. Adrian | ||

I was just wanting to share the observation I had made. I think of wearing a uniform, or displaying the colors, of a country or a group, and when you think of the Sabbath like that, then keeping the Sabbath is displaying the colors for a covenant that you don't want to be under. It says to the world, and to God, that you believe you belong to the old covenant, that you're under the law. I guess the colors of the New Covenant are red and white. Red for the blood of Jesus, and white for His robe of righteousness. I want to display THOSE colors! |
